Evaluation of Slab Top Level

By :
Smt.V.Shailaja,
D.E.E(H),

WALAMTARI.
Objectives:
The Participant will be able to:

1) Evaluate the Road (Slab) Top Level for

a) Bridges(SLRB and DLRB)

2) Calculate an Afflux

3) Evaluate the Slab Top Level For a Super

Passage
Evaluation of Road & Slab Top Level For
SLRB and
Super Passages:
1) Height of Banking at the proposed site i.e.
(Diff of RL/GL and CBL)
2) Canal Bed width
3) Water way
4) Vertical Clearance
For Bridges (Cl 106.2.1 0F IRC: 5-1998) & For SP ( Cl 4.1 of
IS 7784, Part 2- sec5-1993)
5) Afflux (effects on submergence of
surroundings)
Linear Waterway :
Clause 101.8 of IRC 5-1998.

 Linear waterway of a bridge is the width of the

waterway between the extreme edges of water
surface at the highest flood level measured at
right angles to the abutment faces.
101 .9. Effective Linear Waterway
 Effective linear waterway is the total width of
the
waterway of the bridge at HFL minus the
effective
width of obstruction.
Linear Water way and effective Linear Water way:
As per Clause 104.0 of IRC 5-1998:
i. For Artificial Channels: 104.1

Irrigation Channels, Navigation Channels and drainage

channels.
linear water way shall be designed for :

a. To pass Adequate (Full )Discharge at Designed

velocity.

b. Fluming of the channel at the site depends on the

essential requirements with concerned Authority .

ii. Non Meandering Channels & All Natural
Channels : 104.2

 In alluvial beds but with well defined banks

means with
rigid in erodible boundaries.
 linear water way is the distance between the
banks @ the Water Surface elevation

(B) Elevation
iii. Natural Channels 104.3:
 In alluvial beds and having undefined banks, the
effective linear water way shall be determined
from acceptable Rational formula.
 for Regime Conditions: Lacey’s Wetted
Perimeter.
GL GL

d
Bed Width
(B)
As per Clause 104.4 of IRC 5 - 1998

*iv. If river of flashy nature & non scourable bed:

 Determine by the Area, Velocity method:

With the account of

(a). Design Flood Level (b). Water Spread

(c).Characteristics of the bed materials

(d). Water Surface Slope.

For an Example For a SLRB :The effective width
of obstruction is to be worked out as per Clause
No. 104.6.
As per Clause 104.6 :
For calculating the effective linear water
way as
defined in clause 101.9, the width of
obstruction
due to each pier shall be taken as the
mean
submerged width of the pier and its
foundation up
to the normal scour level. The
obstruction at the
Canal Vent way for SLRB :
SLRB

As per Clause 106.0 of IRC: 5-1998:

SI Discharge in M3/ Sec Minimum Vertical
No Clearance in mm.

1. Up to 0.3 150
2. Above 0.3 & up to 3.0 450

3. Above 3.0 & up to 30.0 600

4. Above 30.0 & up to 300 900

5. Above 300 & up to 3000 1200

6. Above 3000 1500

Afflux calculations:
For Canal vent way of Bridges and Super Passage
As per clause 8.4.4.2 Empirical Formula of IS 7784
Part I:1993:
Mole’s Worth Formula:
 V2   A2 
  0.015  2  1

Where,
h = Afflux in m,
V = Velocity in the unobstructed drainage channel
in m/s,
A = The unobstructed sectional area drainage
channel in m, and
a = Sectional area of the drainage provided in the
construction in m2 of the channel
