College is frequently seen as a period of transition and personal development, but it may also be a period of emotional upheaval. Important abilities that can assist college students in navigating the difficulties of this time include emotional intelligence (EI) and interpersonal emotion regulation (IER). Emotional intelligence (EI) is the capacity to identify, comprehend, and control one's own emotions as well as those of others, while interpersonal emotion regulation (IER) is the capacity to control emotions in social contexts, particularly during interpersonal interactions with others. This study investigates the link between interpersonal emotion regulation and emotional intelligence among college students (N=80) from Delhi NCR who are between the ages of 18 and 25. Standardised tests were used to measure Interpersonal Emotion Regulation and Emotional Intelligence. Further Interpersonal Emotion Regulation was studied under 4 factors, Enhancing Positive Affect, Perspective Taking, Social Modeling and Soothing. The results found that Enhancing Positive Affect was significantly and positively correlated with Emotional Intelligence, Further a significant gender difference was found where female college students scored higher in Emotional Intelligence than male college students. However, no significant difference could be found among the male and female students when it came to Interpersonal Emotion Regulation. College students can improve their Emotional Intelligence and Interpersonal Emotion Regulation by practising self-reflection, engaging in mindfulness practices, practising active listening and seeking feedback from others. By implementing these strategies, students can become more aware of their emotional states, regulate their emotions in social situations and improve their overall interpersonal functioning.
