With the ongoing development of increasingly complex and uncertain urban contexts, imagining and envisioning future scenarios have become essential competences in the education of urban planners. We applied scenario planning in a postgraduate studio titled Sustainable Urbanism Project that aimed at facilitating students' learning and improving their ability to craft context-based and future-oriented urban solutions. We believe that this method effectively guided students with multidisciplinary backgrounds to engage with the subject, enhancing their creativity and capability in co-designing sustainable futures. This paper investigates the expectations and challenges faced by students throughout the project process, discussing the applicability of the method and its outcomes, pitfalls, and advantages. The study highlights the reflective role of scenario planning in urban planning studios to guide students in recognising sustainable and unsustainable scenarios for the future. It is important that scenario planning allows students to fully understand the planning process rather than just focusing on generic planning solutions or interventions.

This research studies the data on air quality and construction activities from 29 January 2020 to 30 April 2020. The analysis focuses on three sample districts of Hangzhou's Xiacheng, Gongshu, and Xiaoshan districts. The samples, respectively, represent low-level, mid-level, and high-level districts in the scale of construction projects. The correlative relationships are investigated, respectively, in the periods of 'pandemic lockdown (29 January 2020-20 February 2020)' and 'after pandemic lockdown (21 February 2020-30 April 2020)'. The correlative equations are obtained. Based on the guideline values of air parameters provided by the Chinese criteria and standards, the recommended maximum scales of construction projects are defined. The numbers of construction sites are 16, 118, and 311 for the Xiacheng, Gongshu, and Xiaoshan districts during the imposed lockdown period, respectively, and 19, 88, 234, respectively, after the lockdown period. Because the construction site is only one influential factor on the air quality, and the database is not large enough, there are some limitations in the mathematical model and the management plan. Possible problem solving techniques and future studies are introduced at the end of the research study.

Many years, urbanisation research has largely focused the development of urban agglomerations and megacity regions, whereas less attention was paid on the development of medium-sized cities, small towns, villages, or rural areas. Yet many interrelations and spatial linkages between urban and rural areas exist. In this paper, we present a novel method called ‘TOPOI’ for the integrated analysis and description of settlement units in an urban–rural setting. The TOPOI-method enhances the understanding of the built environment by clustering and describing settlement units of similar characteristics with view to their physical form, function, and connectivity. The method is built on known planning parameters, but does not limit the analysis of settlement units to their administrative boundaries. Based on 11 indicators, 13 TOPOI-classes were identified in two exemplary study regions revealing new insights into urban–rural settlement types. This allows a better understanding of urban–rural linkages and therefore opens up new pathways for a more sustainable development.

Recently architects and archivists started to consider solutions for the digitization of architectural records and conservation of born-digital files. Documenting, organizing, cataloguing, archiving, preserving and accessing files are essential tasks to preserve architects’ digital records. With the increasing quantity of algorithmic design another aspect of the digital design must be on architects’ agenda: the memory of the design process. This paper emphasises the importance of preserving digital architecture records in accessible and sustainable formats for the generations to come. This paper demonstrates a strategy to document visual programming algorithm files allowing to archive, study, interpret or replicate them.

In the last decades, the quantity of information produced and distributed due to digital resources has been growing; big data is contributing to a better perception of our cities. The aim of this paper is to understand spatial segregation in the city of São Paulo (a city known by its social inequality and urban poverty) by scraping social media tags of emotions. We compared aspects that suggest socio-spatial inequalities: urban poor versus feelings of love and hate, versus feelings of joy and fear and the social vulnerability index as background. Three issues are considered in this research: the emergence of urban space big data, digital inclusion, and architects and urbanists' access to big data. To unveil urban poor singularities through social media is an opportunity to reconnect communities to urban design.

This paper describes the use of 3D digitization to acquire data and to produce technical documentation for the inventory of historical buildings. The object defined as case study is an ornamented window of the Lisbon’s Metropolitano Social Headquarters, project of the architect Norte Júnior, located in the city of Lisbon. The methodology of the research relies on the comparison of two different approaches: (1) the use of Autodesk 123D Catch software to produce a geometric model and (2) the of the software My 3D Scanner to obtain a point cloud and the MeshLab software to obtain a texturized mesh.

Parametric design and digital fabrication are becoming ubiquitous tools to contemporary architecture and imply a different design process. With this new perception of the contemporary production we have designed a façade sun shade using fractal geometry as a generative system. Fractals are complex shapes generated with simple rules, so it is relatively easy to change the final geometry when we work with parameters. The design process made possible the creation of different options for the brise-soleil using parametric definitions. Some solutions were physically modeled using rapid prototyping, which we consider an essential tool in the contemporary design process. The whole process conducted to the conclusion that architects need to incorporate a new set of skills when working with digital fabrication. Keywords: fractal, design process, generative system, digital fabrication.

Parametric design and digital fabrication are becoming an ubiquitous tool to contemporary architecture and implies a different
method of detailing. With this new perception of the contemporary detail we have developed a façade sun shade using fractal
geometry as a generative system. Fractals are complex shapes generated with simple rules, so is relatively easy to change the final
geometry when we work with parameters. The design process made possible the creation of many solutions using parametric
definitions. Those solutions were physically modeled using rapid prototyping which we consider as an essential tool to the design
process. This method also involved analysis and testing of the design using software and the physical models. With this project it
was possible to conclude that when working with digital fabrication architects need to incorporate a new set of skills, and that
collaboration between professional is extremely important.
