PurposeDo LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® (LSP) workshops result in improved experience of flow components as well as higher levels of creative output than traditional meetings (MEET)? This research studies the extent to which LSP, as a specialized material-mediated and process-oriented cocreative workshop setting, differs from MEET, a traditional workshop setting. Hypotheses for differences in individual flow components (autotelic behavior, happiness, balance), group flow components (equal participation, continuous communication) and creative output were developed and tested in a quasi-experimental comparison between LSP and MEET.Design/methodology/approachThe study was conducted with 39 practitioners in six teams from various industries. In total, 164 observations were collected during two workshops using the Experience Sampling Method. The creative output was assessed by peer evaluations of all participants, followed by structural analysis and quantitative group comparisons.FindingsThe resul...

If we consider the aspect of “situatedness” in translation, it becomes clear that social connections have a key influence on the work process. Five years after the completion of a case study examining the roles, competences and work coordi- nation of translation project managers (performed in 2002), a follow-up study was performed in the same company in 2007. The data for this new field study was gathered by means of participatory observation. The developments identi- fied can be characterised as moves towards an increasingly computer-assisted network economy. This transition has increased the transparency and efficiency of the company’s work from the point of view of its employees and managers and raised its level of dependency on the other actors in the translation process and on technology. The results suggest that the translation sector is becoming increasingly differentiated — with obvious consequences both for teaching and the translation profession as a whole.

ObjectivesTo explore changes in quality of life and perceived productivity, focusing on the effects of working from home during the first COVID-19 50-day mitigation period in Austria.MethodsWe conducted an Austrian-representative online survey (N = 1010) of self-reported life- and work-related changes during the first COVID-19 50-day mitigation period (March 16 through May 1 2020) compared to the situation before. We used multinominal logistic regression models to identify correlates of improved/decreased quality of life in the entire sample, and of improved/decreased productivity in a subsample of the working population (N = 686). We also calculated age- and multivariable-adjusted ORs and 95% CIs of an improved/decreased quality of life and an improved/decreased productivity by work from home status.ResultsDuring the COVID-19 mitigation period, quality of life improved in 17.5%, but decreased in 20.7% of the general Austrian population; perceived productivity at work increased in 1...

COVID-19 painfully demonstrates how little resilience our societies have to novel viruses. Societies, decision makers, and scientists lack (1) a comprehensive understanding of the complexity of viral outbreaks and their impact on society; (2) intervention portfolios; and (3) a global crisis and resilience policy, all of which are required to develop appropriate measures and to improve societal resilience. We highlight COVID-19 immunity as one key benchmark in preparation for the next wave of the pandemic. Specifically, using network scenarios, we demonstrate the substantial advantage of reintegrating health care workers with acquired COVID-19 immunity in epidemic hotspots, which would not only enable their safe contribution to the health care system but also drastically contain further spread.

Background With the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic surging and new mutations evolving, trust in vaccines is essential. Methods We explored correlates of vaccine hesitancy, considering political believes and psychosocial concepts, conducting a non-probability quota-sampled online survey with 1007 Austrians. Results We identified several important correlates of vaccine hesitancy, ranging from demographics to complex factors such as voting behavior or trust in the government. Among those with hesitancy towards a COVID-19 vaccine, having voted for opposition parties (opp) or not voted (novote) were (95% Confidence Intervall (CI)opp, 1.44–2.95) to 2.25-times (95%CInovote, 1.53–3.30) that of having voted for governing parties. Only 46.2% trusted the Austrian government to provide safe vaccines, and 80.7% requested independent scientific evaluations regarding vaccine safety to increase willingness to vaccine. Conclusions Contrary to expected, psychosocial dimensions were only...

Abstract Some phosphate rock contains elevated concentrations of natural uranium. China is the largest phosphate rock producing country in the world and will soon have the largest uranium requirements in the world as well. Most phosphate rock deposits in China show low uranium concentrations (20–30 mg/kg) so that the recovery of radiotoxic heavy metals is neither economically appropriate nor ecologically necessary. China does, however, also have elevated uranium concentrations (≥90 mg/kg) in phosphate rock deposits in Sichuan and Yunnan. We estimate that China could have recovered nearly 648 metric tU (1.43 million lb U3O8) from those mines in 2016. The amount corresponds to 9.7% of the total reported uranium requirements in this year or 39.3% of reported domestic uranium production in 2016. The future uranium recovery potential may be even higher in total numbers (1158 tU or 3.01 million lb U3O8 in 2030). The main reason are potentially increasing imports of phosphate rock from large exporting countries such as Morocco that show higher average uranium content. In addition, medium- to lower-grade domestic phosphate rock resources with larger shares of accompanying heavy metals, that include rare earths and uranium, will have to be processed. Although the uranium supply for China is currently not at risk, the supply security could be further increased by obtaining unconventional uranium from domestic and imported phosphate rock.

Various studies have indicated that unaccompanied minor refugees (UMRs) have a higher risk of suffering from mental health problems than do accompanied minor refugees and general population norm. However, only a few studies provide data on UMRs regarding post-migration risk factors, their interrelations, and their influence on mental health. In this study, system models of post-migration risk factors for mental health and their interactions were developed in the case of Austria. In three consecutive interactive workshops with scientists and practitioners, fuzzy-logic cognitive mapping techniques were used to integrate the experts’ knowledge. The resulting final system model consists of 11 risk factors (e.g., social contacts in the host country, housing situation, or professional health care services). The model provides a deeper insight into the complexity of interrelated direct, indirect, and reciprocal relations, as well as self-reinforcing triads. This systemic approach provides ...

Recent research supports that a person's self-reported explicit attitude is not necessarily consistent with their implicit attitude. However, in sustainability research, implicit cognitive measures are still at their early stages, and consider primarily singular aspects of sustainability. Here, we pose that the degree of congruence of individuals' implicit and explicit attitudes represents the foundation of any organization's sustainability culture. Although many organizations assert that sustainable development represents an important dimension of their vision and strategy, in reality, sustainable development often translates simply into explicit self-presentation and reputation. Traditional methods such as surveys lack information on implicit measures and-since they collect data based solely on the explicit knowledge of the respondents, which may be biased by social desirability and impression management-can therefore not determine the degree of congruence between expl...

Aber was bedeutet „Systemhaftigkeit“ überhaupt?

Faster changing markets mean that organizations are confronted with the task of efficiently adapting their intra-organizational communication networks to the given demands (Brass et al., 2004). Teams, as the basic collaborative units in organizations, play a crucial role in accomplishing organizational goals, and studies indicate that the communication structures within and between teams significantly affect their performance (Balkundi & Harrison, 2006). However, although teams develop based on the dynamic interactions of actors over time, most such studies analyze static networks (Katz et al., 2004). Consequently, the research question raised in this thesis is how dynamic team networks evolve over time, and how these networks affect the performance of teams (Zenk, Stadtfeld & Windhager, 2010). To answer this question, an integrative model of dynamic team networks was developed based on organizational and communicational network models (Monge & Contractor, 2003). In contrast to stat...

Using activity theory, organisational theory and didactics as theoretical foundations, a comprehensive model of the organisational dimensions relevant for learning and knowledge transfer will be developed. In a second step, a Learning Assessment Guideline will be elaborated. This guideline will be designed to permit a targeted analysis of organisations to identify the status quo in those areas crucial to the implementation of learning and knowledge transfer. In addition, this self-analysis tool will enable learning managers to select adequate didactic models for e- and blended learning. As part of the European Integrated Project "Process-oriented Learning and Information Exchange" (PROLIX), this model of organisational prerequisites for learning and knowledge transfer will be empirically tested in four profit and non-profit organisations in Great Britain, Germany and France (to be finalized in autumn 2006). The findings concern not only the capability of the model of organ...

Social systems can be seen as complex adaptive systems. They organize themselves through social action, while culture creates the structure in which social action takes place. Cognitive schemas of interpretation are the fundament on which people classify, integrate and store cultural relevant information. Although they are mostly automated and not directly observable, they are the building blocks of culture and influence our social and communicative behavior. Implicit processes are intuitive, spontaneous, unintentional and mostly unconscious. They include attitudes, stereotypes, motives and the underlying tenor. The Implicit Association Test (IAT) is a social psychological method based on reaction time originally developed for measuring unconscious social perception (e.g. stereotypes). Compared to more explicit methods such as interviews or questionnaires, implicit methods are less susceptible to social desirability issues and well suited to analyze topics and attitudes the particip...

Although the first coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) wave has peaked with the second wave underway, the world is still struggling to manage potential systemic risks and unpredictability of the pandemic. A particular challenge is the “superspreading” of the virus, which starts abruptly, is difficult to predict, and can quickly escalate into medical and socio-economic emergencies that contribute to long-lasting crises challenging our current ways of life. In these uncertain times, organizations and societies worldwide are faced with the need to develop appropriate strategies and intervention portfolios that require fast understanding of the complex interdependencies in our world and rapid, flexible action to contain the spread of the virus as quickly as possible, thus preventing further disastrous consequences of the pandemic. We integrate perspectives from systems sciences, epidemiology, biology, social networks, and organizational research in the context of the superspreading phen...

The potential of social network analysis (SNA) to foster knowledge management initiatives by providing insights into organizational communication and collaboration infrastructures has been the topic of frequent discussion (Swan et al., 1999; Cross et al., 2001, 2003; Marouf, 2007; Cross and Parker, 2004; Maroufand Doreian, 2010). In contrast to the formal tree structures of organizational charts, which are usually created on a management level, the generation of network visualizations is driven primarily from the bottom up by data ...

ABSTRACT This article takes information visualization to the field of academic conferences and conventions, to explore how cognition and communication of participants could be supported in such ephemeral, knowledge-intensive environments. With focus on a non-invasive method of data collection, we consider the levels of topical, social, temporal and spatial orientation as primary working areas for any support system. Across these areas, overviews and personalized detail-views have to be intertwined, to allow for the localization and navigation of individual participants. To demonstrate a lean approach to these challenges, we introduce a visual conference exploration system, that allows participants to visually explore conferences before, during and after their attendance and support their personal knowledge management by making use of recommendations, which help to establish new contacts, or find the most interesting panels and talks.

Using longitudinal data from a graduate course (with 97 students grouped into 18 teams) we analyze the emergence of collaborative working patterns and the influence of personal traits on team performance and individual team member satisfaction. We find a positive effect of global centrality measures on individual satisfaction, while local centrality measures did not have a significant impact. Moreover, our results indicate that the aggregation of power within working teams is detrimental for team performance. When some individuals are in a ...

PurposeIntraorganizational knowledge and information sharing are important steps toward more-accessible organizational knowledge. The aim of this study is to qualitatively explore factors that contribute to employees' motivations for sustaining intraorganizational knowledge-sharing behaviors and to examine the impact of these factors in a quantitative study with the Austrian Federal Ministry of Defense. This ministry faces a retirement wave in the next 5–10 years. Intraorganizational knowledge sharing before, during, and following this wave will play a decisive role for the organization in the near future.Design/methodology/approachAn exploratory sequential mixed-methods study was conducted. The study design involved a qualitative study phase with expert interviews and stakeholder workshops (n = 9) and a quantitative study phase based on a cross-sectional online survey with an implicit association test on intraorganizational knowledge sharing (n = 59).FindingsIn the qualitative ...

In this paper, we present a case study of applying visual analytics methods to explore a dynamic social network. The visualization and analysis of this kind of data is challenging because of its relational and temporal nature. We illustrate a method and its prototypical implementation that integrate: the combination of three views based on node-link diagrams, a dynamic layout, the visualization of social network analysis metrics, and specific interaction techniques for tracking node trajectories and connections over time. We discuss how this integration of visual, interactive and analytical methods, driven by perceptual principles, can help users with gaining insights when examining dynamic organizational network data.
