On the basis of textual and archaeological data, we seek to describe the role played in the late imperial economy of the Balearic Islands, particularly those of Ibiza and Formentera, the so-called baphium insularum Balearum. Faced with the current lack of data on Majorca and Minorca, the investigations carried out in Ibiza and Formentera allowed us to identify more than forty sites, thus revealing how one of the baphia reported in the Notitia Dignitatum could be archaeologically documented. And this in spite of the low level of visibility of the material remains of the purple dye workshops, often reduced to the mounds of crushed murex snail shells.

We study a Roman inhumation tomb discovered in the country (Pla de Sant Jordi). It had three recesses in its sides, which is unusual in the sepulchral uses of the Tarraconense province. Two glass unguentaria imported from Orient, a silver probe and a denarius of emperor Geta minted on 200-202 AD were found inside the grave. The reconstruction of the funerary ritual shows an afterlife belief into the Greco-Roman classic tradition. This fact could mean that the country owners, together with emergent urban groups, besides using foreign sepulchral traditions and expend valuable items in their burials, search in the classicism their ideological referents for their social promotion, perhaps reconverting traditions of Punic origin.

The agricultural production of the Phoenician Ibiza was based on a polyculture associated with cattle breeding that was already able to produce some surpluses for export. From the second half of the 5th century B.C., all the rural territory of the island is occupied by Punic people who, from small peasant farms, exploit the island's resources. This allows a change in economic model, because, from that moment on, Ibiza will also be a producer and exporter of its own productions on an increasingly large scale.

The conceptions of death in Phoenician and Punic societies start from a tradition deeply rooted in the Near East, which we know from the Ugaritic texts: death is not the end of the individual's existence, but rather a transformation towards a painful subexistence, a kind of spirit that dwelt in a nether world, though physical death did not break the relationship between the living and the dead. But in the 1st millennium, a series of myths of deities who die and rise again appear in Phoenician cities. These death-resurrection cycles already evidence a Phoenician conception of death as a transition to a new existence. The search for immortality is evidenced in the conception of a duality of the soul, a conception also rooted in the Ugaritic tradition. Thus, the spirit of the deceased, if he successfully made his journey to the afterlife, came to exist in a dimension different from the earthly one, integrating into the realm of the ancestors, the rephaïm.

This study brings to light a scarab from the Talayotic site of "Sa Morisca" located in Mallorca island (Spain). It is carved in hard stone, showing a scene at its base where a male deity is seated before an incense-burner in the act of greeting or blessing. Given its iconographic peculiarities as well as its raw material, this scarab can be included in the Classical Phoenician Scarabs Corpus which brings together scarabs carved in hard stone characteristic of the Phoenician-Punic scope, with similar designs at their bases.

Analysis of the episode narrated by Plutarch in which Sertorius, allied with the Cilician pirates, occupies the island of Ibiza, defeating the garrison previously placed by Caio Annio. Then he comes with a naval squadron and five thousand infantry, and Sertorius, seeing that he had no chance in a land battle, faces him in a naval battle, but a sudden storm destroys most of his ships. After the analysis of the events, some hypotheses are raised about the political and economic consequences of these events.

Analysis of the role of Ibiza in the Carthage’s Mediterranean policy until the end of the Sicilian wars of the 4th century BC, combining information from sources and historical context with archaeological data. From a Phoenician foundation in the 7th century BC, Ibiza was placed under the hegemony of Carthage in the second half of the 6th century BC and, from the end of the 5th century and during the 4th century BC, it became the fundamental pillar of Carthage to maintain the Punic influence in two strategic areas such as the Balearic Islands and the Catalan coast.

Gorgoneia, in the Phoenico-Punic culture, are represented over several supports. In the Puig des Molins necropolis (Ibiza) they appear on ostrich egg shells, in the ornamentation of terracotta figures and on ceramic plates. In this work it is argued that gorgona is a symbol that the Punic culture took from Greek iconography to represent the idea of death, in the context of a less traumatic vision of death that prioritizes the personal destiny of the individual and that considers it the beginning of a new existence in the afterlife, in a stage of beatitude alongside the ancestors or rephaïm.

The conservation of Archaeological Heritage in places such as the islands of Ibiza and Formentera faces serious problems: urban growth, urbanization of coastal areas, mechanization of agricultural techniques, proliferation of new infrastructure and plunder, especially through detectors of metals. To all of these problems, the island institutions faced them with a shortage of material and human resources.

A current state of knowledge about the exploitation of agricultural and livestock resources in the Punic Ibiza is presented here. The Phoenician settlers modified, in the first place, the agricultural plain around the bay of Eivissa, the so-called Pla de Vila, by grafting olive trees on native wild olives, as well as the introduction of the vineyard. The introduction of other exogenous fruit trees is also documented. The later Punic agricultural colonization of all the insular territory, supposed the development of new strategies of territorial implantation, with new formulas of appropriation of the earth that will entail changes in the production systems.

The study of four groups of net weights made of lead and preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Ibiza and Formentera allows us to consider the use of different types of mesh tackle for fishing in Ibiza during the Phoenician-Punic era. We have distinguished seine trawl and seine gear for fishing in the open sea, as well as barrier meshes for shallow fishing on the coastal platform. This implies different capture strategies, different work organization and also different productivity.

Following the approach of Costa (1994), it is proposed that the occupation of the rural territory of the island of Ibiza could have developed not only as a consequence of the growth dynamics that the Ebusitan colony was already experiencing throughout the 6th century BC, but also, and fundamentally, by the establishment of Punic population groups - perhaps partly Carthaginian - on the island, causing considerable demographic growth in the middle of the 5th century and the first half of the 4th century BC. And, given that this coincides with the first evidence of settlement in rural areas, as well as with a notable increase in exports, one and other facts can be related. That is why we propose the territorial occupation of the island as an "agricultural colonization."

We could discover that it was the work of French General Jean-Léonhard Koechlin-Schwartz, a prominent military and Bonapartist politician in the 3rd. Republic. And, also, that this work had been exhibited in Paris at the gallery of Georges Petit, and it had been purchased by General Etienne Paul Jean Flatters. It is therefore not only a beautiful work of art, but also a small piece of French history moved to Ibiza.

This work is the continuation of an article published in the previous number, where the surrender and federation of Ibiza to Roman Republic and their consequences were analysed. The last and final step in the process of the island’s integration in the political structures of Roman State was the municipalisation. This new situation, studied here, is reached from the decree issued by emperor Vespasian in the year 74 A.D., awarding the Hispanic towns still peregrinae (foreign under Roman rule), like Ibiza, with the status of municipia under Latin Law. The granting of ius Latii was the frame that created the conditions to become a community ruled by Roman principles, in which some of its members have the option to obtain the Roman citizenship. It was, therefore, the final landmark in the romanization process of ’Ybošim, which from then on was Ebusus forever.

Balance, at the beginning of 21st century of research on the prehistory of the Pitiusae Islands in the last quarter of the 20th century. Despite the important discoveries and first excavations of the seventies and eighties (ca na Costa megalithic tomb, Cap de Barbaria habitat, etc.) there has been no continuity in research, nor have specific long-term programs been developed. For this reason, prehistoric research in the Pitiusas is still largely dependent on that of the Balearic Islands.

The formation of a Semitic society based on the island of Ibiza was the result of the superimposition, during the Archaic period, of two distinct elements: western Phoenicians and Punics. During the fifth and fourth centuries bce, Punic Ibiza reached its maximum economic and demographic development, possibly because of its role as a crucial agent of Carthaginian policy toward Iberian communities in the mainland and the Balearic Islands. After the Second Punic War, all defeated Punic states that sided with Carthage were left under the dominion of the Roman Republic. In the case of Punic Ibiza, the author proposes a process with three main steps: first, a deditio after the Second Punic War; second, a federation agreement, which could have taken place possibly after the Sertorian episode, in the year 81 bce; and third, the municipalization after the decree promulgated by Vespasianus in 74 ce, which converted Hispanic towns that were still peregrinae, like Ibiza, into municipalities rul...

Cala Olivera is yet another example of a place with no visible traces of infrastructures for purple dye production, like others on Ibiza and Formentera, as well as in other sites in the Mediterranean, such as Euesperides. The amount of fauna recovered clearly shows that it was a small workshop operating only during a limited period of time, several decades at most. The pottery recovered allows us to suggest a date in the the 3rd century AD.

Tras la segunda Guerra Púnica, Ibiza quedará bajo do...

This burial allow us to state with new arguments the subsistence of cremation in the Punic period, coexisting with inhumation. And also, the inexistence of segregation in a diferent funerary space of individuals less than 5 years old. The analysis of the grave and its content allow, in the same way, to put forward some considerations about the funerary process

In this paper we aim to call the attention on a type of glass pendant, of which ten specimens have been found at the necropolis of Puig des Molins (Eivissa, Balearic Islands). It is a small male head in all-round volume, with clear Negroid traits, made in a two valves mould. Although it is a quite scarce item, some have been found in several places of the Ancient Mediterranean. However, the bibliographical researches as much as the many consultations we have done, seem to indicate that it is in the islands of Ibiza and Cyprus where the larger number of these glass heads have appeared.
This book, throughout its different chapters, explains how the renovation project of the Puig des Molins Monographic Museum was created, how the museographic assembly was carried out, its inauguration and its future prospects.

Study of the only known cave paintings in Ibiza, discovered by the Abbé Henri Breuil in 1917, of which in 1920 he published a brief note and a drawing. The paintings, which are spread over three panels, do not resemble Mediterranean schematic paintings. The closest parallel to it are some motifs from the Grotta Regina (Sicily). It is concluded that, although they have traditionally been considered prehistoric, nothing opposes to place them in the Punic era.
