III. Topico 08 Nuevas pruebas en funcion vestibular

Vegetation structure and composition, and parameters of the bird community (richness and abundance) were studied in managed beech-fir forests in Navarre (Spain). Relationships between bird parameters and vegetation variables differed in different avian nesting guilds. Whereas secondary cavitynesting bird parameters were not significantly related to any vegetation variable, both richness and abundance of bird species that do not rely on existing holes for breeding increased with the proportion of fir trees, but only in the breeding season. Nest-site selection might be the key factor behind this relationship, since firs would provide more suitable nest-sites than beeches for these species, perhaps because beech leaves are not fully developed early in the breeding season. Moreover, during the winter season richness of birds that do not rely on existing holes for breeding was positively related to the percentage of shrub cover. Although this result should be considered with caution, pro...

The static allometry of secondary sexual characters is currently subject to debate. While some studies suggest an almost universal positive allometry for such traits, but isometry or negative allometry for nonornamental traits, other studies maintain that any kind of allometric pattern is possible. Therefore, we investigated the allometry of sexually size dimorphic feather ornaments in 67 species of birds. We also studied the allometry of female feathers homologous to male ornaments (female ornaments in the following) and ordinary nonsexual traits. Allometries were estimated as reduced major axis slopes of trait length on tarsus length. Ornamental feathers showed positive allometric slopes in both sexes, although that was not a peculiarity for ornamental feathers, because nonsexual tail feathers also showed positive allometry. Migration distance (in males) and relative size of the tail ornament (in females) tended to be negatively related to the allometric slope of tail feather orna...

The ancestral conditions that permit the evolution of extravagant secondary sexual characters are of considerable theoretical and empirical interest because they allow identification of necessary ecological conditions, but also allow empirical tests of models of female mate preferences. We investigated the ancestral and derived state of a range of ecological and evolutionary variables that might have been implicated in the evolution of secondary sexual characters. Extravagant feather ornaments have evolved independently at least 70 times in birds, and the context of these evolutionary events was investigated statistically. The acquisition of feather ornaments was significantly associated with a change in social mating system from monogamy to polygyny or lekking. This association is consistent with the Fisherian mechanism of sexual selection. However, very often also the acquisition of feather ornaments occurred without change in mating system. Therefore, ornamentation can develop fo...

Some studies have suggested that tail streamers in the barn swallow Hirundo rustica may have been elongated 10–12 mm by sexual selection, but according to other studies, the length of these feathers is at the aerodynamic optimum or very close to it. To shed light on this issue, outermost tail feathers were experimentally shortened in male and female barn swallows by 1, 11 or 21 mm. Changes in four physiological parameters commonly used to estimate phenotypic condition in birds (weight, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, blood leukocyte concentration and heterophil/lymphocyte ratio) were checked one month later. Health improved (blood leukocyte concentration decreased) in the group of birds with tails shortened by 11 mm (both males and females), but body condition deteriorated (weight decreased) compared to the other two experimental groups. There was no significant effect of tail‐length manipulation on the other two physiological parameters. These contradictory results suggest trade‐of...

At the beginning of the breeding season, the outermost tail feathers of 31 male Barn Swallows Hirundo rustica were either shortened by 20 mm, elongated by 20 mm or left unmanipulated. In first broods, the number of feeding bouts (per nestling per hour) by males and females did not differ significantly among experimental groups. However, in second broods, males with elongated tails fed their nestlings less often than males with shortened or unmanipulated tails. Male tail elongation may have been detrimental to flight, making capture of insects more difficult. Females paired to long‐tailed males did not compensate for this reduction in feeding by males and their nestlings received less food. Neither feeding rates nor brood size differed significantly between first and second broods. Variation in abundance of large insects at different times of the day (high around noon and low in the morning and afternoon) matched variation in feeding rates, supporting the importance of large insects ...
