This study provides a preliminary characterisation of asynchronous online discussions as a learning tool in higher education (Garrison 2003; Ho & Swan 2007). Our materials consist of the written record of 16 online discussions, totalling circa 165,000 words, from a one-semester course on general English-Spanish-English translation. The participants are second-year students from different nationalities, mostly Spanish, using Spanish and less frequently Galician as lingua francas. We start by describing the various situational factors surrounding the events (including the role of the discussions in the course, the variety of participants and the nature of their relationship), which may explain some highly recurrent language and organisational features encountered in the resulting texts. Secondly, using Antconc, we carry out an exploratory analysis of the lexical and collocational patterns of the exchanges. The findings reveal a very strong interactive component (Herring 1999, Condon &...

The aim of this assay performed at the National Institute of Agricultural Sciences (INCA) was to use the Mother-Baby methodology in the participatory selection of potato cultivars and to evaluate selection criteria taking account the point of view gender. 74 cultivars were planted in a randomized block design (mother trial) replicated three times in the INCA and in observation plots without replicas in three other production farms. The characterization of the cultivars in the Mother-Baby trial was based on quantitative and qualitative traits, a frequency analysis was carried out for the qualitative ones, and an analysis of variance of a factor and a test of comparison of means, for the quantitative ones by means Duncan´s Test (p≤0.05). The data in the Baby plots were processed through a descriptive statistical analysis, using the IBM SPSS version 21.0 package while the selection criteria carry out for female and male farmers was evaluated through Chi-square test of comparison of pro...

During crop years 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 at three locations ( National Institute of Agricultural Sciences-Mayabeque , Agricultural Enterprise “V. Lenin”-Matanzas and Agricultural Enterprise “La Cuba”-Ciego de Avila), 13 progenies from seedling tubers were evaluated and three witnesses varieties (Romano, Spunta and Cal White). Number of tubers per plant, yield per hectare (t ha-1) and incidence of spots on the foliage by the fungus Alternaria solani Soraeur were recorded. The data were processed by analysis of variance, and adjusted with additive main effects and multiplicative interaction model (AMMI) to the characters which was significant genotype environment interaction was adjusted. The sexual progeny Lajera x 6-3-98 were stable for tuber number and yield in six environments studied. The Lajera x 6-3-98, Lajera x 9-80-98, progenies were stable for yield and average tuber mass in the six environments studied. The progeny Samila x 2-130-98, Yara x 1-10-96, Yara x 9-80-98, Atlanti...

The present work had as objective to know the effect of gamma rays of source 60Co in the agronomic and reproductive traits to obtain mutants of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.). Seed-tubers of the cultivar “Barna” imported from Holland with a weight (20 g), with six treatments: five irradiation doses 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 Gy and one non-irradiated control (0 Gy). In this study a strong reduction of plant emergence was observed, as the dose was progressively increased the emergency decreased. It is suggested not to apply doses higher than 50 Gy in seed-tubers, for works directed to the use of radiomutagenesis in the potato breeding of the potato, due to the negative effect in the emergency and in other important characters. Doses applied to potato seed tubers between 20 and 40 Gy could be evidence of induction of mutation, while at 10 Gy a stimulation of flowering was observed in the cultivar “Barna”.

The Supreme Court of Texas has declared that an insurer may properly deny coverage when the insured fails to timely provide the insurer with a copy of the complaint, even if the insured was unaware of the policy’s existence. See Nat'l Union Fire Ins. Co. v. Crocker, 246 S.W.3d 603 (Tex. 2008). This frequently occurs in the context of Commercial General Liability (CGL) policies which include all employees who were acting in the course of and scope of their employment as “additional insureds” or more accurately “omnibus insureds.” In Crocker, an employee of a nursing home swung open a door into a resident allegedly causing extensive injuries. The employee and the nursing home employer separated with minimal post-accident communication. Subsequently, the injured resident brought suit against the employee, claiming damages far in excess of the individual’s resources. The employee did not know that his employer had a CGL policy which arguably would have covered the incident, and acco...

This article presents a computational simulation that studies the variation of power, depending on the number of blades in the runner. To develop the study, six CAD models were created using the software Solid Edge ST8, which comprises 16, 20, 23, 25, 28 and 32 blades, each corresponding to the volume of water taken into the turbine. The discretization of the control volume (water inside the turbine) was performed in the ‘meshing’ module Ansys® Workbench V17.0. The configuration of the equations that govern the fluid dynamics has been solved using Ansys CFX, where a model of homogeneous turbulence was used for the multiphase fluid (water-air), also a turbulence model that corresponds to k-e for both phases was implemented, setting the next values as boundary conditions: a speed of 3.6 m/s in the nozzle, rotational speed of 450 RPM and atmospheric pressure at the outlet. There is an increment of the 3.2% in the power generated by Michell Banki turbine, when the number of blades in th...

BACKGROUND Pregnant adolescents have a higher risk of complications of pregnancy and labor. There is also a higher risk of child abuse and neglect among this age group. AIM To study the psychological and social context, biographical impact and the prevalence of mental disorders among pregnant teenagers. SUBJECTS AND METHODS A semi structured clinical interview was applied to 60 pregnant or puerperal adolescents, aged 12 to 18 years old, assisting to maternal outpatient clinics in the Western District of Santiago. RESULTS An 18% prevalence of mental disorders was found in these girls. Five percent had emotional problems as a reaction to the pregnancy. The most important psychological and social factors associated to pregnancy were a low educational level, economic dependence and a precocious and unprotected sexual life. Fifty seven percent of pregnancies were accidental, due to inadequate use for contraceptive methods or unforeseen sexual intercourse in the context of an informal or ...

Complete androgen insensitivity syndrome (CAIS) is a rare X-linked disorder characterized by a female body habitus and male genotype. The Müllerian duct derivatives are absent or rudimentary, and the testes are undescended. Microtia is characterized by a malformed auricle; and in some cases it is genetically transmitted with a non-sex-linked inheritance pattern. The presence of CAIS with microtia has not been documented previously, and this is the first case to describe the radiological findings of this rare presentation.

The additive main effect and multiplicative interaction (AMMI) has been widely used for studying and interpreting genotype × environment interaction (GEI) in agricultural experiments using multi-environment trials (METs). When METs are performed across several years the interaction is referred to as a 3-mode (3-way) data array, in which the modes are genotypes, environments, and years. The 3-way array can be applied to other conditions or factors artificially created by the researcher, such as different sowing dates or plant densities, etc. Three-way interaction data can be studied using the AMMI analysis. The objective of this study is to apply the 3-mode AMMI to 2 datasets. Dataset 1 comprises genotype (25) × location (4) × sowing time (4) interaction; 8 traits were measured. The structure of dataset 2 is genotype (20) × irrigation regimes (4) × year (3) on grain yield. Results of the 3-way AMMI on dataset 1 show that several important 3-way interactions were not detected when con...
