This lack of quality standards makes it difficult for researchers and practitioners to build on each other's work. The purpose of this article is to present a model for a BPM Program implementation in the banking sector. The authors' four steps implementation model is based on a quality strategy monitoring the different phases of the entire procedure. This paper presents the application of a Fuzzy Cognitive Map (FCM) based theoretical framework and its associated modeling and simulation tool to Strategy Maps (SMs). Existing limitations of SMs are presented in a literature survey. The need for scenario based SMs with inherited ability to change scenarios dynamically as well as the missing element of time are highlighted and discussed upon. FCMs are presented as an alternative to overcome these shortfalls with the introduction of fuzziness in their weights and the robust calculation mechanism. An FCM tool is presented that allows simulation of SMs as well as interconnection of nodes (performance measures) in different SMs which enable the creation of SM hierarchies. An augmented FCM calculation mechanism that allows this type of interlinking is also presented. The resulting methodology and tool are applied to two Banks and the results of these case studies are presented.

Petrochemical plants have inherent economic and personal risks associated with their operation. To give a concrete illustration of the scale of loss of life, personal injury and costs which can arise from plant incidents, the New York Times of 19th June 1991 lists 14 petrochemical disasters from 1987 to 1991 in the USA alone. Figures for these incidents were 7 dead, 138 injured and a cost of 5246 million. It is therefore in the interests of the plant owner 10 apply best practices 10 ensure safe and cost effective plant operation, and it is in the public interest to encourage this. There are two root causes of incidents leading to personal and economic loss. One is the lack of a trusted means for operational staff 10 access consistent, reliable and high quality information about the plant's overall operational status and the procedures for operating it Secondly, there is the absence within management of a verifiable organisational model that accurately reflects the required behaviour of the organisational agents in performing safety-critical tasks. This is a necessary foundation 10 cope with the 'multifarious changes and unexpected events that occur in a complex plant The LIFETRACK project brings together an international petrochemical company (BP), a supplier of plant information and control systems (Honeywell) and an academic decision-support group. We are working IOgether in a united" attempt to make an in-depth investigation inlO the information needs of plant personnel when operating in safety-critical situations and how reliable information systems can be designed and maintained over the lifetime of a plant This paper illustrates how we have been developing the object-relationship modelling (ORM) and Object Life Cycle (OLC) languages for the problem of designing an organisational model as a prerequisite to an information system 10 support permit management. In addition 10 this, we also demonstrate the application of an object-oriented variant of the Z specification language 10 the verification of this model. Through this example, the principles of organisational modelling and verifICation for safety-critical tasks we are developing for the LIFETRACK project will be illustrated.

The cost to produce models of the organization is high and model accuracy is important. How do models help support understanding of business processes? Should functional business personnel or systems analysts create business models for the organization? How are models validated? From their experience with applying EMS technology and re-engineering techniques with actual organizations, the authors discuss benefits of broad involvement during modeling and improvement idea generation. This paper elaborates on the application of Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCMs) in strategy maps (SMs). The limitations of the Balanced Scorecards (BSCs) and SMs are first discussed and analyzed. The need for simulated scenario based SMs is discussed and the use of FCMs as one of the best alternatives is presented. A software tool for the development, simulation and analysis of FCM based SMs is also presented. The effectiveness of the resulting software tool and FCM theory in SMs is experimented in two case studies in Banking.
