A new method for population comparison has been developed in order to determine the most discriminating systems in relation to diverse populations. The method compares pairs of populations on the basis of confidence intervals for allelic frequencies and does not require any previous assumption, such as normality of the population. A data set of 12 populations studied for Polymarker Kit (Roche) genetic systems, 13 biallelic systems (LDLR, GYPA, D7S8) and two systems with three alleles each (HBGG, GC), was considered. The analysis produced a total of 144 confidence intervals (12 populations x 12 alleles). The raw data were then analyzed comparing pairs of populations, allele by allele, through their respective confidence intervals. The method calculates the matrix of similarity between pairs of populations for each allele and eventually for each genetic system. Finally, the 12 populations were classified depending on the number of nondiscriminating alleles. The results of this method are compared to those produced by such usual techniques as Principal Component Analysis.

The coast of Málaga has shown an important concentration of prehistoric sites with Neolithic occupation. This paper aims to review their historiography as well as briefly present the main lines of the interdisciplinary research carried at Cueva of Nerja and sites located at the southern part of Sierra de Mijas. Data is still preliminary but it shows the presence of a fully developed Neolithic which seems to be related to the arrival of Neolithic pioneers from the second half of the 8th millennium cal BP.

In this paper, a heavy-tailed distribution approach is considered in order to explore the behavior of actual financial time series. We show that this kind of distribution allows to properly fit the empirical distribution of the stocks from S&P500 index. In addition to that, we explain in detail why the underlying distribution of the random process under study should be taken into account before using its self-similarity exponent as a reliable tool to state whether that financial series displays long-range dependence or not. Finally, we show that, under this model, no stocks from S&P500 index show persistent memory, whereas some of them do present anti-persistent memory and most of them present no memory at all.

The Integrated Safety Assessment (ISA) methodology, developed by the Spanish Nuclear Safety Council (CSN), has been applied to a thermo-hydraulical analysis of a Westinghouse 3-loop PWR plant by means of the dynamic event trees (DET) for Steam Generator Tube Rupture (SGTR) sequences. The ISA methodology allows obtaining the SGTR Dynamic Event Tree taking into account the operator actuation times. Simulations are performed with SCAIS (Simulation Code system for Integrated Safety Assessment), which includes a dynamic coupling with MAAP thermal hydraulic code. The results show the capability of the ISA methodology and SCAIS platform to obtain the DET of complex sequences.

The relevance of the mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase Hog1p in Candida albicans was addressed through the characterization of C. albicans strains without a functional HOG1 gene. Analysis of the phenotype of hog1 mutants under osmostressing conditions revealed that this mutant displays a set of morphological alterations as the result of a failure to complete the final stages of cytokinesis, with parallel defects in the budding pattern. Even under permissive conditions, hog1 mutants displayed a different susceptibility to some compounds such as nikkomycin Z or Congo red, which interfere with cell wall functionality. In addition, the hog1 mutant displayed a colony morphology different from that of the wild-type strain on some media which promote morphological transitions in C. albicans. We show that C. albicans hog1 mutants are derepressed in the serum-induced hyphal formation and, consistently with this behavior, that HOG1 overexpression in Saccharomyces cerevisiae represses the...

In fungi and many other organisms, a thick outer cell wall is responsible for determining the shape of the cell and for maintaining its integrity. The budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been a useful model organism for the study of cell wall synthesis, and over the past few decades, many aspects of the composition, structure, and enzymology of the cell wall have been elucidated. The cell wall of budding yeasts is a complex and dynamic structure; its arrangement alters as the cell grows, and its composition changes in response to different environmental conditions and at different times during the yeast life cycle. In the past few years, we have witnessed a profilic genetic and molecular characterization of some key aspects of cell wall polymer synthesis and hydrolysis in the budding yeast. Furthermore, this organism has been the target of numerous recent studies on the topic of morphogenesis, which have had an enormous impact on our understanding of the intracellular events ...

We describe a ganglioglioma with atypical radiological appearances, in an uncommon location. CT showed a nonenhancing low-density lesion without calcification. On MRI the lesion gave nonspecific low signal on T1-weighted images and high signal on T2-weighted images. The tumour was in the right frontal lobe, producing bulging and thinning of the calvarium.

Brain development is a sequential anatomical process characterised by specific well-defined stages of growth and maturation. One of the fundamental and necessary events in the normal development of the central nervous system in vertebrates is the formation of a myelin sheath. It is becoming more evident that this process is influenced by dietary lipids. A number of findings have indicated

The effect of chronic alcohol consumption on Na(+)-K+ ATPase, Na(+)-Li+ countertransport, outward Na(+)-K(+)-Cl- cotransport system and the Na+ leak was investigated in red blood cells from 18 normotensive subjects with a daily alcohol intake of more than 150 g. The study was repeated after 3 months of alcohol withdrawal, and results were compared with a group of 20 healthy normotensive teetotalers. Maximal efflux rate (Vmax) and apparent dissociation constant for internal Na+ (KNa) of the Na(+)-K+ pump and the Na(+)-Li+ countertransport were significantly higher in alcohol consumers. A positive correlation between daily alcohol intake and Vmax of both transport systems (p less than 0.05) was observed. These values significantly decreased after alcohol withdrawal. A simultaneous stimulation of the Na(+)-K(+)-Cl- cotransport system after alcohol withdrawal was also observed. Blood pressure values were higher in alcoholics (133.7/82.3) than in abstainers (121.4/75 mmHg) and significantly decreased (128.5/76.9 mmHg) after withdrawal. A positive correlation between the stimulation of the Na(+)-K(+)-Cl- cotransport and the decrease of blood pressure after withdrawal was observed. In conclusion, chronic alcohol intake induces disturbances on red blood cell Na+ metabolism that dissipate with the cessation of drinking. Similar abnormalities also reported in humans and animals with primary hypertension have been associated in the pathogenesis of essential hypertension. Therefore, the pressor effect of chronic alcohol intake could be mediated through these changes in cellular Na+ metabolism.

``BOOTES-IR" is the extension of the BOOTES experiment, which operates in Southern Spain since 1998, to the near IR (NIR). The goal is to follow up the early stage of the gamma ray burst (GRB) afterglow emission in the NIR, alike BOOTES does already at optical wavelengths. The scientific case that drives the BOOTES-IR performance is the study of GRBs

Traumatic rupture of aorta is a serious complication in accidents, mainly road accidents, with a high mortality unless an immediate diagnosis and surgical correction is made. A case of traumatic rupture of the aorta shown in the acute phase by Doppler-echocardiography is reported. This technique can be of great value in the study of patients with thoracic trauma who do not show clear signs of aortic rupture which require urgent aortography.
