The use of automated equipment such as the plasma cutter reduces manufacturing times, in addition to being more accurate in the cutting of a wide range of metals, the use of this type of device optimizes manufacturing processes in the manufacture of equipment for processing raw materials from the agricultural sector, as well as electromechanical equipment and implements used in the agro-industrial sector. From the academic point of view, the use of this type of machine familiarizes future professionals with new generation equipment and reduces the duration of laboratory practices, which decreases the stress and anxiety conditions of the engineering students, improving their academic performance. Therefore, the objective of this research was to design a prototype plasma cutter, which was used for the practical activities of the electromechanical engineering student, for the evaluation of the efficiency of the prototype, the duration of the academic activities was quantified, as well ...

Renewable energy, also called green energy, has reached 40% worldwide due to the fact that every year governments promote its development, which helps to reduce the burning of fossil fuels and CO2 emissions, the main causes of environmental pollution. Among the alternative sources of clean energy is solar energy, whose alternative is feasible in Ecuador, since being a tropical country allows the generation of electricity from solar radiation, which is estimated at 4.5 kw m2 d-1. The objective of this work was to design a solar energy module to partially replace the use of conventional energy sources and minimize CO2 emissions, in the operation of the monitoring and surveillance system of the University of the Armed Forces of Ecuador (ESPE) in Latacunga, Cotopaxi. The results found show that the solar modules used can generate a load of 100W per day, guaranteeing an energy supply of 4 hours. Although the operation of the solar panel system was optimal from the operational point of vi...

The use of fossil and hydroelectric energy has led to the deterioration of natural resources due to problems of pollution and deterioration of water basins, which is why clean energy systems such as solar and wind power should be adopted to make sustainable use of these resources in higher education systems where the environmental component is a transversal axis of the curriculum, Awareness of the use of this type of clean energy should be raised. In this regard, the University of the Armed Forces of Ecuador (ESPE) designed and evaluated a prototype wind turbine to provide energy in the areas of internal security, which would serve as a showcase to demonstrate the advantages and applicability of this type of energy in real situations. The aim of the wind turbine prototype was to provide reliable energy to the most remote and vulnerable areas or to systems that need constant energy in case of emergency due to the absence of the conventional distribution network. The results found sho...

Context-aware applications have been the focus of extensive research, yet their implementation in mobile devices usually becomes challenging due to restrictions of processing and energy. In this work, we present, demonstrate, and evaluate a mobile platform for real-time human activity recognition. The evaluation results indicate that the system can be implemented in real scenarios meeting accuracy, response time, and energy

This paper presents ABLA, a novel multiobjective ant colony-based optimization algorithm to address the bin packing problem with load balancing. ABLA incorporates (1) a new probabilistic decision rule that builds solutions by making use of individual pheromone matrices for each objective function; (2) a new pheromone updating approach in which ants deposit variable amounts of pheromone; (3) two new local search methods to improve load balancing: LBH and LBH-AB; and (4) the Pareto dominance approach to select optimal solutions. ABLA is compared to a Multiobjective Max-Min Ant System (MO-MMAS) and an adapted multiobjective version of the First-Fit Decreasing (FFD) algorithm, which is the best known ρ-approximation algorithm for the bin packing problem. Results show that ABLA finds better solutions than both FFD and MO-MMAS, and that LBH and LBH-AB noticeably improve the load balancing across bins.

The identification of psychological stress can provide important feedback in order to perform critical activities. While a certain amount of stress may increase performance, an overly stressful reaction may hinder it. Because subjective bias can make it difficult to accurately recognize psychological stress, it would be advantageous for an external system to perform the task instead. We present a platform for psychological stress detection using physiological sensors during a chess match. The sensors are inside an unobtrusive chest strap that can be worn by the player during a match. By playing games on an Android phone, the system can apply machine learning techniques to the player's vital sign data to give important feedback such as which moves caused the player to become stressed during a match.

The objective of this study was to compare the performance of two immunomagnetic separation technologies to deplete T cells from buffy coats of human blood. Specifically, two versions of the commercial MACS(R) Technology: MiniMACS and SuperMACS, and a prototype, flow-through system, the QMS, were evaluated. Peripheral blood mononuclear leukocytes (PBL) were isolated from buffy coats and an immunomagnetic separation of CD3(+) cells was conducted using company and optimized labeling protocols. To mimic peripheral blood containing bone marrow purged hematopoietic stem cells, HSC, CD34 expressing-cells (KG1a) were spiked into PBL prior to T-cell depletion once optimized depletion conditions were determined. Once the labeling protocol was optimized, the MiniMACS system performed well by producing a highly enriched CD3(+) fraction, and a respectable level of depletion of T cells and recovery of KG1a cells in the depleted fraction; an average log(10) depletion of T cells of 2.88 +/- 0.17 and an average recovery of the KG1a cells of 60.8 +/- 5.94% (n = 14). The performance of the SuperMACS system was very similar with an average log(10) depletion of T cells of 2.89 +/- 0.22 and an average recovery of KG1a of 63.1 +/- 8.55% (n = 10). In contrast, the QMS system produced an average log(10) depletion of T cells of 3.98 +/- 0.33 (n = 16) with a corresponding average recovery of 57.9 +/- 16.6% of the spiked CD34+ cells. The aforementioned QMS performance values were obtained using sorting speeds ranging from 2.5 x 10(4) to 1.7 x 10(5) cells per second. It is suggested that the lack of a 100% recovery of the unlabeled KG1a cells is the result of a previously reported "drafting" phenomena which pulls unlabeled cells in the direction of the magnetically labeled cells thereby resulting in loss of the unlabeled cells.

Cell populations can be enriched using a number of physicochemical methods based on characteristics, such as density, size, and volume. Centrifugation using density gradients is typically applied to isolate populations with similar characteristics. Cells obtained using these methods can be further authenticated using specific antibodies that react to markers on the cell surface, allowing the identification of cell subtypes.
