The purposes of this study were to confirm servant leadership as a higher-order factor construct with 6 factors and 24 items, and to examine the relationships and mediating effects among servant leadership, procedural justice culture (PJC), trust in leaders, customer-oriented organizational citizenship behavior (OCB), and employees’ service quality in the Chinese hotel industry. Data were collected in two rounds from hotels in all parts of China. The CFA result showed servant leadership can be treated as a higher- order construct to be used to measure servant leadership behaviors in the Chinese hotel industry. SEM results demonstrated that servant leadership was not significantly directly correlated to customer-oriented OCB. However, the indirect relationship between these two variables was significant. PJC had mediating effect on the relationship between servant leadership and customer-oriented OCB. Additionally, a statistically significant correlation was found between servant leadership and trust in leaders, and trust in leaders was also significantly associated with customer-oriented OCB. Further, it was found that customer-oriented OCB and service quality were strongly related, while there was no significant correlation between servant leadership and service quality
Community engagement has recently become a focus in engineering education. However, systematic reviews that catalog best practices and identify research patterns and gaps remain scarce.

Purpose Learning and development are critical to a business’s success. This paper aims to focus on organizational factors at multiple organizational levels that facilitate learning culture in a small- and medium-sized enterprise (SME) in northwestern China. Design/methodology/approach This study is qualitative in nature. A single case study method is used to explore an SME’s organizational factors that facilitate learning culture. Findings This paper categorizes the organizational factors into seven dimensions: shared vision, creating continuous learning opportunities, informal learning that promotes inquiry and dialogue, collaboration and team learning, knowledge management systems, work–family enrichment and encouragement and support. This paper also compares the findings with learning culture models from Western research. Research limitations/implications Chinese culture has far-reaching and fundamental effects on many East Asian countries and regions. For SMEs in similar cultura...

I proposed that trust mediates the relationship between ethical leadership and organizational citizenship behavior, which is classified into 2 types: organizationally directed (OCBO) and individually directed (OCBI). Participants comprised 104 supervisor-subordinate dyads employed in public-sector organizations in a city in eastern China. The results showed that ethical leadership had a significant main effect on both OCBO and OCBI. In addition, cognitive trust had no significant mediating effect on the relationships between ethical leadership and OCBO and ethical leadership and OCBI, but affective trust fully mediated these relationships. The contribution of the results, limitations in the study, and future directions for research are also discussed.

Purpose Building on social exchange theory and selection, optimization and compensation theory, this study aims to examine a moderated curvilinear relationship between servant leadership (SL) and work-family conflict (WFC). Design/methodology/approach Participants were 329 female workers recruited from a Chinese small business in the service Industry. A three-step hierarchical regression was conducted to examine the relationships among the variables and the incremental contribution of SL and age and the squared term of SL. Findings Study results confirmed a curvilinear relationship between SL and WFC and the moderating effect of age. When younger female employees perceived a moderate range of SL from their supervisors, they reported higher WFC compared to the low or high level of perceived SL. On the contrary, senior female employees reported a lower level of WFC when they perceived a moderate level of SL than when they perceived very low or high levels. Originality/value SL researc...

Purpose This study aims to examine the relationship between supervisor’s altruistic leadership behavior (ALB) and family-to-work development (FWD) in the context of Chinese small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs); and test the mediation effect of learning organization culture (LOC) between ALB and FWD. Design/methodology/approach A non-experimental, quantitative, cross-sectional survey research approach was applied. A structural equation modeling technique was used to test all hypotheses. Findings Results indicated that ALB is positively and significantly correlated with FWD. Additionally, the relationship between ALB and FWD is mediated by LOC. Practical implications This study suggests that building and maintaining an effective LOC requires leaders to champion, human resource (HR) professionals to strengthen and employees to support learning as a system. Thus, HR professionals should implement altruistic leadership mentoring and coaching programs. In the case of Chinese SMEs, al...

While a plethora of studies has been conducted to examine stress and its impact on mental health in western countries, research is scarce investigating the relationship between student challenge stress and health illness in the context of Chinese colleges. No studies examined the moderating effect of self-efficacy on the relationship between challenge stress and health illness. This study attempted to investigate the relationships between these three variables among Chinese college students. Especially, this study focused on examining whether self-efficacy moderated the effect of perceived challenge stress on students' mental health. Also, the differences were tested between male and female students in terms of these three variables. A sample of 578 Chinese college students was recruited over an approximately 12-week period from 7 Chinese universities. An online survey link was distributed through WeChat. The SPSS version 26 software was used to analyze the data. Results showed that there is no significant difference between genders in terms of perceived challenge stress, self-efficacy, and students' mental health. In addition, challenge stress was positively related to the students' mental health (beta = 0.35, p < 0.01) while there was a negative association between self-efficacy and mental health (beta = -0.41, p < 0.01). Furthermore, self-efficacy plays a moderating role in the relationship between challenge stress and mental health (beta = -0.11, p = 0.02). Students with low self-efficacy tend to experience more mental health issues. It is suggested that Chinese colleges and universities pay more attention to students with low self-efficacy, either through faculty/staff interventions or peer counseling. Professors consider reducing students' academic stress to improve their mental health.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to explore how gender and gender role identity separately and jointly affect managerial aspirations. Design/methodology/approach The study was cross-sectional in nature. Survey data were collected from Chinese Government sectors. Two-way analysis of variance was used to test the research hypotheses. Findings The results showed that gender role identity and combination of gender and gender role identity predict management aspirations while gender alone does not affect management aspirations. Androgynous individuals self-reported higher scores of managerial aspirations. Female managers who perceive themselves as androgynous and masculine tend to possess higher management aspirations. However, when they perceive themselves to exhibit feminine traits, they are more likely to hold lower management aspirations. Moreover, male managers with androgynous and feminine traits are inclined to have higher management aspirations. Research limitations/implicati...

AIMS To examine the relationships between perceived ethical leadership, perceived interactional justice climate and patient-oriented organizational citizenship behavior. DESIGN A cross-sectional non-experimental design was employed. METHODS The convenience sampling was adopted. Data were collected in July and August, 2018. A total of 738 nurses were recruited from eight Chinese hospitals. The survey included instrument scales of ethical leadership, interactional justice climate and patient-oriented organizational citizenship behavior. SPSS version 22 was used to compute means, standard deviations and intercorrelations. The partial least squares structural equation modeling was chosen to estimate the path coefficients of the relationships. RESULTS Relationships among perceived ethical leadership, perceived interactional justice climate and organizational citizenship behaviors were statistically significant. Perceived interactional justice climate mediated the relationship between perceived ethical leadership and nurses' organizational citizenship behaviors. CONCLUSIONS Ethical leadership is related to interactional justice climate, which in turn, increases nurses' organizational citizenship behavior. Nurse leaders are encouraged to exhibit ethical behaviors and to create justice climate. Ethical leadership scale can be used to select, train and evaluate the nurse supervisors and managers. IMPACT Hospital administrators are encouraged to recruit and promote those with both moral compass and leadership potential to nursing leadership positions. Nursing managers should create a justice climate in their hospitals. Hospital administrators could use ethical leadership scale to develop ethical leadership training programs.
