    Sugarcane bagasse (Saccharum officinarum L.) is a readily available waste product of cane-sugar processing. The major components of bagasse are cellulose and hemicellulose. The objective of the research was to produce bio-ethanol from hydrolizate of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) bagasse which hydrolyzed by combination of acid and enzymeand further fermented by three types of microorganisms, respectively P. stipitis CBS 5773, or S. Cerevisiae D1/P3GI, or Z. mobilis 0056 FNCC. The experiment employed descriptive analyses in triplicates. The result were as follows: effectiveness of Z. mobilis 0056 FNCC was highest for producing bio-ethanol, respectively 18.99 g/L within 3 hours. S. cerevisiae D1/P3GI produced 17.05 g/L bio-ethanol within 12 hours, and P. stipitis CBS 5773 13.03 g/L bioethanol within 24 hours.

    Telah dilakukan penelitian degradasi minyak pelumas bekas oleh bakteri asal tanah yang terkontaminasi minyak pelumas bekas dalam media air tawar dan air laut. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memperoleh isolat bakteri yang mempunyai kemampuan mendegradasi tinggi terhadap minyak pelumas bekas dalam media air tawar dan air laut. Bakteri hasil isolasi diidentifikasi dan diseleksi terhadap minyak pelumas bekas. Hasil seleksi diaklimatisasi untuk mendapatkan bakteri yang akan diuji pada media pelarut air laut. Hasil seleksi dan aklimatisasi memperlihatkan Arthobacter sp., Bacillus sp., dan Pseudomonas sp. mempunyai degradasi yang tinggi. Uji biodegradasi dilakukan dalam media Bushnell-Haas Gram Mineral dengan pelarut air tawar dan air laut dengan bakteri uji berupa kultur tunggal dan campuran.     The research of chelation ability on two types of granuls formulation of sappan wood (Caesalpinia sappan, L) extracts on iron-overloaded rats (Rattus norvegicus, L.) has been done. The aims of the study were to determine the effective of formulation and the dose of granulated wooden cup extract to reduce the excess iron in rats indicating the condition of iron-overloaded in thalassemic patient due to blood transfusion. The research has been done using completely randomized design with 11 groups and three replications.     The modifying effects of dietary feeding of zerumbone isolated from Zingiber zerumbet on the development of azoxymethane (AOM)-induced colonic aberrant crypt foci (ACF) were investigated in male F344 rats. Expression of cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 in colonic mucosa exposed to AOM and/or zerumbone was also assayed. In addition, we assessed the effects of zerumbone on cell proliferation activity of crypts by counting silver-stained nucleolar organizer regions protein (AgNORs) in colonic cryptal cell nuclei. To induce ACF rats were given three weekly subcutaneous injections of AOM (15 mg/kg body weight). They were also fed the experimental diet containing 0.01% or 0.05% zerumbone for 5 weeks, starting one week before the first dosing of AOM. AOM exposure produced 84+/-13 ACF/rat at the end of the study (week 5). Dietary administration of zerumbone caused reduction in the frequency of ACF: 72+/-17 (14% reduction) at a dose of 0.01% and 45+/-18 (46% reduction, p<0.001) at a dose of 0.05%. Feeding of zerumbone significantly reduced expression of COX-2 and prostaglandins in colonic mucosa. Zerumbone feeding significantly lowered the number of AgNORs in colonic crypt cell nuclei. These findings might suggest possible chemopreventive ability of zerumbone, through suppression of COX-2 expression, cell proliferating activity of colonic mucosa, and induction of phase II detoxification enzymes in the development of carcinogen-induced ACF.

    Research has been carried out on the encapsulation of probiotics of the genus Bacillus and Lactobacillus using rice flour, maltodextrin, and talc as carriers. The purpose of this study was to obtain a type of carrier material that can maintain the character of probiotics for fishfeed in aquaculture activity. The research method used is the experimental method, and the data were analyzed descriptively and experi-mentally. The experimental method used a completely randomized design with a factorial pattern. The results showed that talc can main-tain antimicrobial activity against E. coli (16.3 mm), S. typhimurium (17.3 and 13.8 mm) and coaggregation (12.9% and 15.01%). Rice flour can maintain antimicrobial activity against E. coli (20 mm), S. typhimurium (11.7 mm), and coaggregation (14.5%). Maltodextrin can maintain antimicrobial activity against E. coli (20.7 and 17.2 mm), S. typhimurium (19.8 and 20.8 mm) and coaggregation (8.8 % and 17.35%).

    This study aims to obtain raw materials as an effective carrier for starter inoculum consortium of Bacillus coagulans B. licheniformis, B. subtilis, and Pseudomonas sp. and contact time for bioremediation of polluted water from the river Cimuka. The study was conducted by using the experimental method with completely randomized design (CRD) with two-factor factorial 9x9. The first factor is the carrier material (P) consisting of 9 level and the second factor is the contact time (W) consisting of 9 level. Parameters measured were BOD, COD, TSS, and ammonia.     Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui efektifitas hidrolisis kombinasi asam sulfat dan enzim terhadap hasil hidrolisat gula pereduksi.  Penelitian dilakukan secara eksperimental, dan data yang diperoleh dianalisis secara deskriptif. Hidrolisis secara kimia menggunakan larutan asam sulfat (H2S0 4 )    6M, pH 1,0-2,0, diinkubasi pada suhu 120°Cselama 60 menit. Hidrolisis lanjutan secara enzimatik dengan menggunakan enzim α-amylase dosis 0,17 I-Il/gdosis  , enzim hemiselulase dosis 0.0003 g / g), enzim selulase dosis 0,55 µl/g) dan enzim amiloglukosidase 0,37 µl/g.Dari hasil penelitian dapat diketahui bahwa hidrolisis dengan asam sulfat 6 M dihasilkan konsentrasi gula pereduksi sebesar 22,6 % dengan DE ( Dextro s e /E q u i v a l e nt ) sebesar 28,63 %. This study was conducted to characterize the probiotic bacteria from cabbage (Brassica oleracea L.) as an anti H. pylori. Identification of bacteria were observed with the API test.     Penelitian untuk mendapatkan konsorsium bakteri dalam bahan pembawa yang efektif dalam proses bioremediasiperairan asal sungai Cimuka telah dilakukan. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptifdan metode eksperimental. Metode deskriptif digunakan pada tahap pengukuran parameter pH dan suhu. Metodeeksperimental yang digunakan yaitu Rancangan Acak Lengkap (RAL) yang terdiri dari dua faktorial dan tigapengulangan untuk parameter jumlah populasi bakteri, amoniak dan TSS. Faktor I adalah kombinasi konsorsiumbakteri dalam bahan pembawa (P) dan faktor II adalah waktu kontak (T). Sedangkan untuk parameter DO, BOD danCOD digunakan analisis variansi satu faktorial, yaitu faktor kombinasi konsorsium bakteri dalam bahan pembawa(P). Pada penelitian ini dilakukan produksi HaNPV pada larva S. litura instar empat yang dikelompokan sebanyak 10 ekor, 20 ekor, 30 ekor, 40 ekor, 50 ekor dan 60 ekor. Kelompok larva S. litura diinfeksi virus secara oral dengan cara memberi pakan campuran 1 ml suspensi HaNPV dengan konsentrasi 4 X 105 polihedra/ml yang ditambahkan pada 30 gram pipilan jagung manis.     This study aims to determine the effective dose and the granule formulation of sappan wood (Caesalpinia sappan L.) extract (SWE) to increase the antioxidant activity in blood serum in excessive iron condition. This study was complete random design with 11 treatments and was repeated three times. Male wistar rat (R. norvegicus L.) of 200 g, was given with iron dextran to induce a state of iron excessed. A total of eight groups were then given by two types of granule formulations, and each granule formulation consisting of SWE doses of 0, 100, 200, and 400 mg / kg bw, 3 treatment groups: group that was given by Iron Dextran, distilled water, and deferiprone as a comparison. The study was conducted over 15 days, the parameters observed including: activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA). Current therapies focus on recovering heart function and reducing risk factors such as hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia. However, oxidative stress and inflammation are important causes of further damage to cardiovascular organs. Caesalpinia sappan Linn. (Fabaceae), a flowering tree native to tropical Asia, has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.     Objective: In this study, the embryonic rat cardiomyocyte cell line H9C2 was used to investigate the cardiotoxicity effect of sappan wood ethanol extract (SWEE). Methods: Sappan wood was extracted in 96% ethanol and divided into dose concentrations of 2.5, 5, 10, 50, 100, and 150 μg/ml, with deferiprone used as a control. Cell viability was assessed using the PrestoBlue Cell Viability Reagent, according to manufacturer protocols. Results: Microscopic examination showed that the cell viability of H9C2 was preserved by SWEE treatments at a dose of 10 μg/ml and suggested dose concentrations of 50 μg/ml of SWEE. The percentage of viable cells was greater than 95% with a dose concentration of 10 μg/ml of SWEE, but it was significantly reduced with a dose concentration of 50 μg/ml of SWEE (p<0.05). Conclusion: The optimal dose concentration of SWEE to reach 95% cell viability was 10 μg/ml.

    This research was carried out to detect the effect of Sappan Wood Extract (Caesalpinia sappan), Wheat grass and Vitamin E Treatment on the liver structure of iron overload rat (Rattus norvegicus).The method of experimental used Completely Random Design (CRD in triple repetition. The treatment had been carried out orally. Iron dextran with total dose of 1.5 g kg-1 of body were given to rat on the first, fourth, seventh, ten and thirteenth day. Sappan Wood Extract (Caesalpinia sappan)200 mg kg-1 bw, 400 mg kg-1 bw, Wheat grass extract 100 mg kg-1 bw and Vitamin E 60 mg kg-1 bw were given to rat everyday for 15 days. At the seventeenth, rat were killed and their liver were taken.     Untuk mengetahui apakah membran alginat dapat digunakan sebagai produk alternatif tekstil medispembalut luka primer, maka telah dilakukan uji pre klinis untuk mengobati luka pada kulit kelinci albino jantan,sesuai dengan standar yang berlaku (OCDC Guidelines for the testing of Chemicals, 404). Percobaan dilakukanterhadap tiga ekor kelinci albino jantan, yaitu dengan melukai bagian kiri dan kanan punggung kelinci. Bagiankanan punggung kelinci ditempelkan pembalut luka yang kontak langsung dengan luka, sedangkan bagian kirinyatidak (sebagai kontrol). Adapun waktu pengamatannya adalah 1 jam, 24 jam, 48 jam dan 72 jam. Dari hasilpercobaan diketahui bahwa membran dapat mempercepat penyembuhan luka dan tidak menyebabkan iritasi kulit,bahkan setelah tiga hari hampir tidak terlihat adanya goresan bekas luka.

    This study was aimedto identify probiotic characteristics and to test the cellulolytic ability of Bacillus megaterium and Bacillus mycoides bacteria for probiotic microbe candidates in fish and shrimp feed. The description of the cellulolytic and amylolytic abilities of these bacteriawas obtained by non-experimental method and descriptive analysis. Probiotic characteristic identification includes growth curve was obtained through total plate count method, cellular and colony morphology, and cellulase and amylase enzyme activity test using DNS method. Results indicated that the maximum growth of B. megateriumwas observed after six hours at 35.62 x 10 10 (CFU), while B. mycoideswasafter 30 hoursat 42.6 x 10 10(CFU). The macroscopic observation showed that the colony of B. megateriumwas concave and smooth,while B. mycoides was flat, relatively rough, with silken threads around the colony.Both bacteria had milky white color, bacillus shape, Gram positive, and sporous.
