This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the ability of air-powder abrasion to decontaminate dental implants. Twenty-six implants were inoculated with a Streptococcus sanguinis biofilm media in a novel periimplantitis defect model. Six implants served as controls, and 20 implants were disinfected with either the Cavitron JET Plus or the AIR-FLOW PERIO air-powder abrasion units. Residual bacteria were cultured, and colony forming units (CFUs) were totaled at 24 hours. As expected, negative control implant cultures showed no evidence of viable bacteria. Bacterial growth was observed on all positive control cultures, whereas only 15% of the experimental cultures displayed evidence of viable bacteria. The average CFU per streak for the positive control was 104 compared with a maximum of 10 and 4 CFUs for the Cavitron JET Plus and AIR-FLOW PERIO, respectively. There was a 99.9% reduction in bacteria for both air-powder abrasion instruments. Air-powder abrasion is an effective technique for ...

DNA methylation occurs predominantly on cytosine-phosphate-guanine (CpG) dinucleotides in the mammalian genome, and the methylation landscape is maintained over mitotic cell division. It has been posited that coupling of maintenance methylation activity among neighboring CpGs is critical to collective stability over cellular generations, however the mechanism of this coupling is unclear. We used mathematical models and stochastic simulation to analyze data from experiments that probe genome-wide methylation of nascent DNA postreplication in cells. We find that DNA methylation maintenance rates on individual CpGs are locally correlated, and the degree of this correlation varies by genomic regional context. Applying theory of one-dimensional diffusion of proteins along DNA, we show that exponential decay of methylation rate correlation with genomic distance is consistent with enzyme processivity. Our results provide quantitative evidence of genome-wide methyltransferase processivity i...

Activity in three colonies of the nocturnally foraging Australian antNothomyrmecia macropsis investigated. Workers apprehended while foraging were marked, released, and later recaptured within nests following excavation.Everyforager in each nest was encountered and marked. It was expected that unmarked, nonforaging, domestic-specialist workers would be discovered in the nests. This was unexpectedly not the case as all workers, apart from one or two in each colony, had been marked, and therefore had foraged at least once during the three-night experiment. The few unmarked individuals are considered to have been temporarily residential nest-entrance guards. Behavioral subcastes comprising “domestic”versus“foraging” workers were thus not indicated, evidencing absence of worker caste polyethism inNothomyrmecia. The experiment predated emergence in the nests of adult workers from cocoon-enclosed pupae at a season when large feeding larvae of the current annual brood were still being prov...

Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) without whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT) for brain metastases can avoid WBRT toxicities, but with risk of subsequent distant brain failure (DBF). Sole use of number of metastases to triage patients may be an unrefined method. Data on 1354 patients treated with SRS monotherapy from 2000 to 2013 for new brain metastases was collected across eight academic centers. The cohort was divided into training and validation datasets and a prognostic model was developed for time to DBF. We then evaluated the discrimination and calibration of the model within the validation dataset, and confirmed its performance with an independent contemporary cohort. Number of metastases (≥8, HR 3.53 p = 0.0001), minimum margin dose (HR 1.07 p = 0.0033), and melanoma histology (HR 1.45, p = 0.0187) were associated with DBF. A prognostic index derived from the training dataset exhibited ability to discriminate patients' DBF risk within the validation dataset (c-index = 0.631) ...
