She has been studying the work of Andrea Camilleri since 1997, has presented papers at various international seminars and has numerous publications, including a monograph dedicated to the author. La base metodológica es el concepto de paratextualidad delineado por Genette en el contexto más amplio de su poética general sobre la transtextualidad; este trabajo se concentra en particular en el uso de la nota alográfica en la traducción de algunas obras de Andrea Camilleri y de Arturo Pérez-Reverte. El objetivo es demostrar, incluso con datos bastante parciales, que el uso de notas alográficas en las traducciones de estos autores es de gran utilidad para dar una idea concreta de las variedades lingüísticas y de la cultura de los países de origen. La inclusión de notas a pie de página en una traducción no implica una admisión de incompetencia por parte del traductor, sino que revela la voluntad ética de compartir con un lector extranjero las opciones, la lengua y las estrategias de un autor de otro país, para hacer percibir la inconmensurabilidad de las diferencias entre culturas - que, sin embargo, no impide la comunicación -, como valor y no como derrota.

This paper aims to summarise the sensorial perception in Camilleri’s work, starting with the sense of sight, from the glimpses of the Sicilian scenery, to the author’s special consideration of the tormented artist Caravaggio. Hearing is connected with the natural sounds of the Island, but it is also protagonist in The brewer of Preston: a group of Vigatesi, in honour of the Sicilian composer Bellini, plots to sabotage Ricci’s opera, imposed by the Tuscan prefect. The sense of touch is related to the issue of sensuality, largely described by the writer in all its facets. As regards taste, we need only recall the wide range of recipes mentioned in his books, because eating does not refer only to mere survival, but is related with a mystical and luxurious experience. Food is strictly connected with the aroma from the kitchen, but also with the smell of the sea and the Sicilian barren fields. Metaphorically, the feto d’abbrusciato (“burning smell” meaning “smell a rat”) points to the sixth sense of the Camillerian detectives, which allows a fast and satisfactory outcome of investigations not just in Montalbano’s novels, but even in narratives set in a previous time.

The methodological basis is the concept of paratextuality outlined by Genette in the broader context of his general poetics on transtextuality; this work focuses in particular on the use of the allographic note in translation of some Andrea Camilleri’s and of Arturo Pérez-Reverte’s works. The aim is to demonstrate, even with rather partial data, that the use of allographic notes in the translations of these authors offers useful insights into the linguistic varieties and culture of the countries of origin. The inclusion of footnotes in a translation does not imply an admission of incompetence on the part of the translator, but it does reveal the ethical will to share with a foreign reader the choices, language and strategies of an author from another country, to make perceive the immeasurability of the differences between cultures – which however does not prevent communication –, as a value and not as a defeat.

L'objectiu d'aquesta publicacio es mostrar com Andrea Camilleri i Arturo Perez-Reverte, escriptors de diferents paisos i idiomes, han emprat estrategies narratives similars per a reconstruir esdeveniments del passat. Ens centrem especialment en que ambdos van relatar la dictadura i la guerra, experiencies que van viure, utilitzant les armes de la ironia i el sarcasme i deformant la realitat a vegades de manera parodica i caricaturesca. Fent us del seu sentit de l'humor, es distancien dels esdeveniments, respectant la memoria d'aquests successos i fent una crida a la societat civil perque assumeixi el sentit de responsabilitat individual.

Molti personaggi letterari si potrebbero paragonare metaforicamente a isole inaccessibili, su cui tanti si sforzano, senza successo, di esercitare una forma di possesso. Questo lavoro si focalizza su tre personaggi, l’italiano Montalbano, il francese Adamsberg, lo spagnolo Falcó, tra i quali ho cercato di dimostrare che sussistano numerose ed evidenti analogie, riguardo alla loro personalità e ai loro rapporti con i colleghi di lavoro, con la famiglia, gli amici, gli amori. Si tratta di individui straordinari dalle caratteristiche eccezionali che, spinti dall’esigenza di autonomia, tendono a seguire il loro istinto e spesso a violare le regole; hanno logica, intuito, capacità di reazione insoliti, tali da farli primeggiare rispetto a chi li circonda. La loro superiorità innegabile può essere invidiata o sminuita, ma inevitabilmente li porta a evitare i legami e a scegliere la solitudine volontaria come stile di vita, come condizione necessaria per il funzionamento della loro mente p...

Camilleri’s short narrative is studded with stories of fantastic character, in which it is possible to identify both the magical atmospheres of the fairy tale, and the satirical attitudes of the moral apologue. The aim of this contribution is to demonstrate that the unifying element of this varied production consists in the ethical commitment of the writer, in his will to affect effectively within civil society.

Riassunto Lo scopo di questo contributo è mostrare come Andrea Camilleri e Arturo Pérez-Reverte, scrittori di paesi e lingue diverse, abbiano adottato strategie narrative simili per ricostrui-re gli avvenimenti del passato. Il focus si concentra, in particolare, sul fatto che hanno raccontato la dittatura e la guerra, che entrambi hanno sperimentato, utilizzando le armi dell'ironia e del sarcasmo e deformando la realtà talvolta in modo parodico e caricaturale. Attraverso il sense of humour di cui sono dotati, prendono le distanze dagli avvenimenti, rispettando la memoria degli eventi e richiamando la società civile all'assunzione del senso di responsabilità individuale. Parole chiave: Camilleri; Pérez-Reverte; dittatura; guerra; ideologie; ironia; memoria del passato. Abstract. From the ritual of the bowler to the "Petit Cabrón": critique of ideologies and derision of dictatorship in the narrative work of Andrea Camilleri and Arturo Pérez-Reverte. The purpose of this paper is to show how Andrea Camilleri and Arturo Pérez-Reverte, writers from different countries and languages, have adopted similar narrative strategies to reconstruct the events of the past. Special attention is given to their experiences of dictatorship and war, which they both lived, by using irony and sarcasm as a weapon and by deforming reality, sometimes in a parodic and caricatured way. Through their sense of humour they distance themselves from facts, showing respect for the memory of events and inviting civil society to assume a sense of individual responsibility.

Questo lavoro si focalizza su tre personaggi, l'italiano Montalbano, il francese Adamsberg, lo spagnolo Falcó, tra i quali ho cer-cato di dimostrare che sussistano numerose ed evidenti analogie, riguardo alla loro personalità e ai loro rapporti con i colleghi di lavoro, con la famiglia, gli amici, gli amori. Si tratta di individui straordinari dalle caratteristiche eccezionali che, spinti dall'esigenza di autonomia, tendono a seguire il loro istinto e spesso a violare le regole; hanno logica, intuito, capacità di reazione insoliti, tali da farli primeggiare rispetto a chi li circonda. Many fictional characters can be metaphorically compared to inaccessible islands for those who try to reach them without success. This paper focuses on three characters: The Italian Montalbano, the Frenchman Adamsberg and the Spaniard Falcó. Hence, the present research intends to prove that there are a lot of evident similarities among them regarding their personality and their relationships with colleagues, family, friends and lovers. They are extraordinary people with exceptional peculiarities , motivated by their need of autonomy, since they tend to follow their instinct and frequently break the rules. They use logic and intuition and they have an unusual ability to react that allows them to be successful in leading the field and be followed by others. Some people envy them and may try to undermine their achievements, but their unquestionable superiority pushes them to inevitably avoid that and to choose a voluntary solitude as a lifestyle, which is a necessary condition for the functioning of their privileged minds and an essential requirement for the job that they decided to do.
