Television series

The aim of this paper is to study from an anthropological perspective the formation of identities in the Canadian tv-series Vikings (2013- ), created by Michael Hirst for The History Channel. With this purpose, we use a textual methodology of the most relevant fragments. The discussion of the results is organized around one main core point that shape the construction of identities in this show: power.

Negli ultimi anni gli spettatori televisivi si sono abituati alla presenza sempre più imponente di serie tv. Ma non solo. Queste serie televisive vedono sempre più al centro delle vicende narrate protagonisti un po’ particolari, con caratteristiche che potrebbero sembrare a prima vista abbastanza anomale. Infatti si tratta spesso di protagonisti “negativi”, deboli o cattivi, in sostanza si tratta di antieroi. Il testo affronta quindi l’analisi di questi personaggi anomali che manifestano caratteristiche contrarie a quelle normalmente attribuite all’eroe, ma che nonostante tutto attraggono gli spettatori televisivi che ad essi si affezionano. Ma perché siamo attratti dai protagonisti “negativi” delle serie tv? Cos’è un antieroe? E come tale figura si integra alla forma della narrazione televisiva attraverso la serialità?

Culture has been traditionally seen as the by-product of a particular society in a clearly defined territory (Yengoyan 1986). However, the elusive concept of culture, seen as both a merging and dichotomising force, has been called into question due to the increasing entanglement of contemporary societies (Welsch 1999). Indeed, territories can no longer be seen as containing cultures, since people move with their meanings, and meanings find ways of travelling and flourishing even when people stay in their territories (Hannerz 1996). The increasing development of communications systems (Hepp 2009) and economic interdependencies and dependencies plays an important role in challenging the traditional view of culture. Thus, the concept of transculturality can better characterise contemporary cultures and their ability to move beyond material and immaterial borders.
One of the ways through which cultural-specific phenomena cross borders and find a new life in a different environment is represented by forms of hybridisation (Bhatia 2004), seen as vehicles which can help popularise given genres. The hybridisation of broadcast news, for instance, has produced forms of docu-fictions, which can be placed in the blurred generic area of story-telling and news reporting, mixing together facts and fictions (Baym 2009). However, as vessels, these narrative hybrid forms bring together with them cultural-specific elements, which are difficult to re-enact in a new context. This is the case, for instance, of the TV series Gomorrah, which is based on the Italian novel Gomorra written in 2006 by the Neapolitan author Roberto Saviano.
As Saviano has repeatedly underlined (Caliendo 2012), most of the news stories linked to the Neapolitan Mafia, known as Camorra, stay local and remain largely unknown to most Italians. Further, as Cavaliere (2010) states, international books and movies generally focus on the Sicilian Mafia, while little has been written about the Camorra. Saviano’s exposé, first, and its popularised adaptations have shed light on the criminal activities of the Camorra and, while some elements of fiction are undeniably present in both the book and its adaptations, they succeeded in raising awareness on the problems linked to the Neapolitan context, something that journalism has failed to highlight from a national and an international point of view.
In order to achieve this, from a national point of view, the TV series, for instance, premiered in Italy with Italian subtitles, since the language of Gomorrah – The Series (from now on referred to as GTS) is a mix of both Italian and Neapolitan dialogues. While representing a third step in the translation of the original script, the UK subtitles of the TV series, on the other hand, have helped draw attention to the criminal activities plaguing Naples’ hinterland from an international point of view. However, since translation is central in the process of identity formation (Gentzler 2008), the aim of this contribution is to focus on the transcultural reception of the series. In particular, based on the concept of translation repercussion (Chesterman 2007), the proposed analysis will firstly focus on a particular aspect of the TV series, that is, how the producers of the series have created their target audience in the Italian and English versions of the DVD blurbs. Based on the work of Bednarek (2010, 2014), this preliminary analysis of the TV series will help us see how this specific type of advertising discourse construes its target audience. Since these texts “must take care to engage with what can be a diverse audience in an appropriate way” (Baker 2006: 50) by, for instance, “deciding what aspects [...] are foregrounded (or backgrounded) and what assumptions are made about the interests and lifestyles of the target audience” (Baker 2006: 50), the analysis of DVD blurbs can help us better understand what values are specifically constructed in discourse, thus, highlighting the type of universe that producers want to create when addressing their target audience. Additionally, since this type of persuasive discourse will eventually result in a financial exchange, language plays a fundamental role in the representation of the TV series as a whole and, thus, how it should be interpreted by its viewers.
The second part of our investigation will focus on how the main characters linguistically construct themselves in the context of the Italian and English subtitles of the TV series. We have decided to focus specifically on the subtitles of the TV series since, in the English adaptation, GTS was not dubbed and, thus, in order to make the comparison between the original and its re-adaptation more productive, we have decided to avoid taking under consideration also the original script of the TV series, since this would have insulated given differences that were not strictly linked to the translation process but due to the different media. The analysis was carried out thanks to corpus linguistic methodologies and these have allowed us to see how the “individual linguistic thumbprint” (Culpeper 2014: 166) of each character in the source text was construed in the target text. As we will see, given characteristics of specific characters seem to be stereotyped in the target text, while others seem to highlight given peculiarities in the target texts that were not particularly underlined in the source texts, thus, offering the audience new personas in the translation of the original text.

Television aestheticians and cognitivists share an important endeavour.  Both groups are driven to explore the compelling emotional, cognitive and aesthetic appeals of contemporary television serials. In other words, whether we take up a broadly aesthetic perspective or cognitive approach towards TV, we are engaged in an ongoing act of appreciative engagement. We share a mutual fascination with the televisual works that captivate us, and an urge to address our sense of their potential significance or moment.
Our apparent commonalities, however, lead us not only in diverse directions, but often also into disagreements and mistrust. I write as someone committed to television aesthetics, who embraces the arrival of new perspectives, and recognises the usefulness of much cognitive work, but who nonetheless will admit to some uneasiness about the presumptions underlying cognitive science, and trepidation regarding its deployment within TV studies. This chapter is a preliminary foray into the two approaches side by side. But rather than comparing and contrasting, I aim to uncover something a little more nuanced and elusive: the distinctive sensibility of each perspective and the implicit values which inform it.
          The chapter proceeds by identifying some of the commonest notes of concord and discord between aesthetic and cognitive television scholars, uncovering differences of purpose, scope and values, in order to better appreciate the points of urgent distinction which separate the approaches, and to illuminate the hazards of speaking at cross purposes.
          So that I might grasp more positively the specific strengths and merits of each perspective, I briefly consider how a specific moment of television might seize the attention of its practitioners. I have chosen two moments drawn from recent US television series – The Closer (FOX, 2005-12) and Desperate Housewives (ABC, 2004-12) – that I argue are most sensitively and persuasively appreciated via cognitive and aesthetic perspectives respectively.
My exploration of these two examples leads me, finally, to revisit this book’s core focus – the television serial – via a consideration of ‘moment’. The ‘sense of moment’ in this chapter’s title consciously denotes two meanings of the word. The first is more commonplace: a moment is a short time, an instant. The second refers to importance, weight, significance. What is the ‘moment’ of a particular fragment within a long-running serial? How do cognitive and aesthetic approaches weigh this moment? As we shall see, cognitivists and aestheticians take up subtly dissimilar stances in relation to seriality and moment(s), and in each approach, the two meanings of ‘moment’ are differently interconnected. Attending to these distinctions helps us uncover something of the sensibility of each perspective. And in keeping with the values and sensibility of a television aesthetician, I ultimately aver that it is television programmes themselves, or the unique particularities of selected moments within them, which will guide us – if we let them – to choose the most appropriate appreciative approach in each case.

DE ALLÁ PARA ACÁ es una serie documental infantil ganadora del Concurso Nacional del INCAA “Series Documentales para ser emitidas por canal Paka Paka (2014)”. La serie forma parte de la grilla de contenidos del primer canal educativo y público diseñado por el Ministerio de Educación de la Nación Argentina. La propuesta documental representa una herramienta educativa y de comunicación innovadora desarrollada a partir de un trabajo interdisciplinar entre la comunicación, la animación, el audiovisual, y la sociología de las migraciones.

La serie cuenta la vida cotidiana de niños y niñas migrantes que residen en la ciudad de Córdoba (Argentina), y retrata la diversidad y la hibridez cultural de la ciudad desde la mirada y vivencia de los niños. Busca representar los relatos de los niños migrantes, sin caer en los estereotipos, simplificaciones o visiones folckorizantes de las culturas de nuestra Latinoamérica y del resto del mundo.

DE ALLÁ PARA ACÁ es una propuesta dinámica, atractiva y reflexiva que permite al público infantil de entre 8 y 12 años acercarse a los conceptos de diversidad, interculturalidad y migración desde la mirada de los protagonistas de la serie: desde niños para niños. La serie no está dirigida exclusivamente a niños que han experimentado un proceso migratorio, ya que plantea temas transversales vinculados a los desafíos propios de la infancia: la relación con los otros, la convivencia, los vínculos, la integración, la discriminación, etc.

Leif Kramp untersucht erstmals umfassend die Gedächtnisrelevanz des Massenmediums Fernsehen sowie den archivischen und musealen Umgang mit der Fernsehgeschichte. Anknüpfend an die interdisziplinären Zweige der Gedächtnisforschung analysiert der erste Band die Bedeutung des Fernsehens seit Beginn des regelmäßigen Programmbetriebs in Deutschland und Nordamerika unter gedächtnistheoretischer Perspektive. Damit legt dieser Band den Grund für eine differenzierte Bewertung des Fernsehens als Medium des Erinnerns und Vergessens. Auf Basis einer breiten empirischen Erhebung bei zahlreichen Institutionen in Deutschland, Kanada und den USA befasst sich der zweite Band mit dem Status Quo und den Perspektiven der Verwaltung und Nutzung von Überlieferungen aus der Fernsehgeschichte. Kramp analysiert die maßgeblichen Problemstellungen, mit denen sich Museen und Archive konfrontiert sehen: von Fragen der Auswahl, Bewahrung und Zugänglichkeit von Fernsehüberlieferungen bis hin zu ihrer Präsentation und dem Medienwandel, und diskutiert Strategien für die Arbeit von Fernsehmuseen im digitalen Medienzeitalter.

Por estar vivendo seu auge de popularidade, o seriado televisivo é o enfoque dessa pesquisa. Ela tem tem como objetivo traçar a trajetória e flexões presentes no estilo de narrativa seriada. Como critério, foi levado em consideração suas origens na oralidade, sua apropriação pelos meios de comunicação, as variações proporcionadas pelas transformações tecnológicas e suas consequências, além de sua espectatorialidade. O artigo busca organizar os elementos que moldaram o estilo até se chegar ao formato de série de televisão que consumimos atualmente. A narrativa seriada encontrou seu lugar ao sol nos meios de comunicação de massa. O ato de dividir uma história para manter o interesse daquele que está a acompanhando favorece principalmente o capital, que fideliza um público curioso e que está disposto a consumir essas histórias. Jornais, cinema, rádio, televisão e internet, não importa o suporte, a narrativa seriada tem espaço em todos eles. A serialidade encontrou diversas formas e suportes para ser realizado, mas sua origem é bem anterior à sua apropriação pelos meios de comunicação de massa e está relacionada à oralidade. The paper investigates the ways Shakespeare’s oeuvre, with its reputation for a universal adaptability that embraces all media and contexts, finds its way into a serial structure that is the dominant form of visual performance today. In order to see whether this seems at all possible, the paper examines the most recent television series, Star-Crossed, in which the original Shakespearean narrative unit (Romeo and Juliet) is broken up into several episodes, thus adopting the most popular televisual genre of our time. The paper argues that this fragmentation of the original narrative whole fits into the contemporary cultural tendencies of textual poaching, snatching quotations and (re)placing them in seemingly random contexts, often with a complete ignorance of original meanings and contextual frameworks, but applying them to whichever means seems favourable for the adaptors. At the same time, it also appears that the dramatic original does not lend itself easily to serialisation, and notwithstanding the conscious decisions on the part of the creators to embed the series into the topical, stylistic, generic and aesthetic contexts of contemporary television, the failure of the enterprise comes as no surprise.

Mariana Elizabeth Espósito Riera; más conocida como Lali Espósito o simplemente Lali, es una actriz, cantante y bailarina argentina. Nació el diez de octubre de mil novecientos noventa y uno (1991), en Parque Patricio, al sur de Buenos Aires.

Es hija de María José Riera; visitadora médica, y Carlos Espósito; entrenador de fútbol, y tiene dos hermanos mayores; Ana Laura y Patricio, a los que está muy unida.

Su apodo se lo puso su hermano, de pequeño no podía llamarla Mari, así que empezó a llamarla Lali.

Desde niña soñaba con poder cantar, bailar y actuar y comenzó su carrera como actriz infantil en dos mil tres (2003), participando en la serie Rincón de Luz de Cris Morena.

Además; también participó en las adaptaciones teatrales de estas tres series. Su gran éxito llegó de la serie de Casi Ángeles, también creada y producida por Cris Morena. En la serie la hacia de Marianella Rinaldi (Mar), papel que interpretó hasta dos mil diez (2010).

De la serie salió la banda pop adolescente Teen Angels, formada por Lali, Peter Lanzani, Nicolás Riera,  Gastón Dalmau y China Suárez, pero que fue en el dos mil once (2011) reemplazada por Rocío Igarzábal.

El grupo realizó giras por toda América Latina, España e Israel.

Entre dos mil siete (2007) y dos mil once (2011), lanzaron seis álbumes de estudio, que fueron discos de oro y platino.

En mayo del dos mil trece se estrenó Teen Ángels: el adiós, un documental en 3D sobre el último concierto de la banda.

Lali actuó en dos mil once (2011), en la telenovela Cuando me sonreís y al año siguiente debutó en cines junto a Mariano Martínez y Federico Amador en la película La pelea de mi vida.

Durante el dos mil doce (2012), realizó una participación especial en la telenovela Dulce amor y en dos mil trece (2013) trabajó en Solamente voz y fue elegida por el público como actriz de televisión favorita en los Kids Choice Awards Argentina.

En el dos mil catorce (2014) participó en la película peruana A los 40 y como actriz invitada en las series web Tiempo libre y Eléctrica.

En dos mil quince (2015) participó junto a Mariano Martínez en la telenovela Esperanza mía y por su actuación recibió un premio Tato a la mejor actriz. También realizó la versión teatral Esperanza mía, el musical.

En dos mil dieciséis (2016), Lali filmó Permitidos, una comedia junto a Martín Piroyansky.

Como hemos visto, además de actuar, Lali también puede cantar y en dos mil trece (2013), inició su carrera musical en solitario. Su álbum debut A bailar salió al mercado en marzo del dos mil catorce (2014).

Lali realizó una gira nacional e Internacional con su A bailar tour hasta dos mil dieciséis (2016).

En dos mil quince (2015), cantó Aquellas pequeñas cosas con Joan Manuel Serrat y realizó un dúo con Ricky Martin en una gala benéfica, además de convertirse en la telonera de Katy Perry en su south de Argentina The Prismatic World Tour.

El veinte de mayo del dos mil dieciséis (2016), lanzó su segundo álbum Soy, con Sony Music, que recibió el disco de oro y platino en Argentina, México, Chile, Ecuador, España, Israel y Uruguay.

En julio del mismo año Espósito ingresó en la lista Top 100 Artist de Billboard y estrenó su propio Reality show del Detrás de las cámaras del disco.

Interpretó junto al grupo mexicano CD9 Own the Night para un spot publicitario de Coca Cola y fue telonera de Fifth Harmony en Chile.

En septiembre del dos mil dieciséis (2016), presentó Boomerang, el tercer sencillo y el videoclip de Soy y en fin de año; diciembre, el de Ego. En septiembre del mismo año se lanzó la canción Mueve, donde colabora con el cantante español Abraham Mateo.

En noviembre recibió el MTV Europe Music Awards a la mejor artista de América del Sur.

En febrero del dos mil diecisiete (2017) participó con la cantante italiana Bay K en vídeo y sencillo Roma-Bangkok y participó como jurado en el Festival de Viña del Mar. Como se presentó en vivo en dicho Festival fue acreedora de dos Gaviotas, una de oro y otra de plata, además del premio a la artista más popular.

En julio del mismo año subió a Youtube el vídeo Una na, que fue el primer sencillo de su tercer álbum y en noviembre se hizo acreedora de dos premios MTV Europe Music Awards por segundo año por ser considerada la mejor artista de América del Sur y que tuvo el mejor acto mundial.

This article proposes an allegorical reading of a Turkish TV serial to allow an assessment of the politico-cultural atmosphere of the ephemeral present. This present is defined as a world of post-truth where competing universalisms produce a condition of antithetical truths, each of which claims to be the only possible truth. It is argued that these truths are products of a situated antagonistic struggle, which, rather than indicating a firm belief, are used to serve the purposes of a game of power seeking. The search for truth in the battle of good against evil, characteristic of melodrama, is, however, what allows for narrative continuity in serials. Refusing to consider politics and culture as two separate domains, the article explores the ways the structure of game both as a narrative genre and as a way of conducting politics characterizes the world of post-truth.

Talking politics online is not exclusively reserved for those spaces dedicated to politics, particularly the everyday political talk crucial to the public sphere. However, past net-based public sphere research has focused mostly on political spaces thereby neglecting an array of other genres. The aim of this article is to move beyond politically oriented communicative spaces by investigating political talk within the British reality TV discussion forum Wife Swap. The purpose is to see whether a forum dedicated to reality TV provides the communicative space, content, and style for politics that extends the public sphere. The central question is whether it fulfils the requirements of rationality and ‘decent’ deliberation. Moreover, the analysis moved beyond a formal notion by investigating how expressives influence the more traditional elements of deliberation. The findings revealed that Wife Swap participants engaged in political talk that was often deliberative. Moreover, it was a space where the use of expressives played a key role in enhancing such talk.

De la multiplication des écrans, faut-il conclure à une mutation du spectateur ? C’est à cette question que tentent de répondre les auteurs de cet ouvrage, issu d’un colloque international organisé en 2014 par l’Institut national de l’audiovisuel (Ina), l’Université Paris 8 et l’Université du Québec à Chicoutimi. Une première partie réunit des contributions qui interrogent la notion même de spectateur face à la multiplication des écrans et des plateformes. Dans la seconde partie, les auteurs explorent ces nouveaux dispositifs dont les frontières sont parfois difficiles à cerner, et qui offrent de nouvelles possibilités expressives. La troisième partie décrit des usages récemment apparus qui changent le regard que nous portons sur l’image animée. Enfin la quatrième partie nous introduit à de nouveaux secteurs de recherche, à l’interface des trois précédents. Les auteurs décrivent ces pratiques qui combinent plusieurs écrans, se prolongent entre les plateformes et créent des expériences inédites

La legitimación cultural de las series de televisión es percibida de manera crítica en algunos autores del campo de los estudios de televisivos. La desconfianza en relación con este proceso tiene que ver con la creencia de que ha provocado una consolidación de las jerarquías culturales, de clase y de género. Los argumentos utilizados por los deslegitimadores culturales de las series televisivas son, en su mayoría, una aplicación de las teorías sociológicas de la distinción de Bourdieu y de los estudios culturales. Nuestro objetivo será revelar las debilidades de algunas de sus críticas contra este proceso de legitimación cultural, así como sus ataques a las jerarquías culturales, su apología de lo popular o su malestar con la estética.

This paper analyzes the series Sex Education's role in the transnational dissemination of discourses on non-normative sexualities, equality and LGbtiq+ diversity. From a LGbtiq+ Studies perspective, a mixed design with non-experimental ex-post-facto methodology has been applied through transmedia measurement instruments and the iLGa World and Global Attitudes reports. Netflix-through Sex Education-is confirmed to transnationally spread values of diversity and LGbtiq+ equality in countries without full social and legal protection for such diversity, promoting the construction of alternative subjectivities.

Good Girls is an original, comedy-crime drama created by Jenna Bans. It premiered on February 26th, 2018 on NBC as a mid-season entry.

From publicly-available sources, I determined (1) the creator’s track record of success and (2) the originality of the story’s premise.

Using a proprietary algorithm, I determined the size of the pilot episode script’s semantic network.

With these three variables, I identified 18 comparable dramatic series that appeared on the four major broadcast networks in the last ten seasons.

Based on my analysis, I predict that (1) Good Girls will not achieve a full first season, i.e. 20+ episodes (2) Good Girls has only a 1-in-6 chance of being renewed for a second season and (3) if renewed, the season will fall well short of 20 episodes.

Questa tesi di triennale ripercorre brevemente la ricca storia del genere biografico nel mondo del cinema. In un secondo capitolo vengono analizzati alcuni film di tre paesi diversi (Nord america, Francia e Italia) in un contesto contemporaneo. Infine viene analizzato il genere biopic nel fenomeno di grandissimo successo di quest'ultimi anni: la serie televisiva. Verrà esposto in particolare il caso di Narcos prodotto da Netflix.

En 1928, una moderna compañía de telecomunicaciones empieza a operar en Madrid. En aquellos años, jóvenes trabajadoras de todo el mundo se mudan a la gran ciudad con intención de adquirir un lugar de trabajo como operadoras telefónicas. Las  chicas del cable (Netflix, 2017-) relata el giro que da las vidas de cuatro mujeres que llegan al Madrid de la época, un lugar que representa el progreso en la España de aquel tiempo, para  ser contratadas como operadoras de centralita para esta compañía. Esta es la premisa argumental de la primera serie original de televisión producida por Netflix España. En el contexto español de expansión y creciente pugna entre las diferentes plataformas televisivas, y con Netflix con poco más de dos años de vida en el momento del estreno de la serie, la expectación crítica y social por la misma era muy alta. En este escenario, Bambú producciones, productor europeo de referencia, creó una serie con problemas relacionados con la definición del contexto histórico, especialmente anacrónica en cuanto a la especificidad del contexto nacional de la década de los veinte; pero sobre todo en la definición de los personajes femeninos, algo especialmente grave debido a que la promoción de este producto audiovisual era su reivindicación feminista.
Con el propósito de analizar la traición representativa desde el punto de vista feminista, este capítulo analiza la narrativa de Las chicas del cable, especialmente en cuanto a los cuatro personajes principales se refiere, y teniendo en mente algunas de las producciones previas de Bambú Producciones, como Velvet (Antena 3, 2014-2016), referentes inevitables para entender el planteamiento de los personajes femeninos en las series históricas de la televisión española contemporánea.

Stranger Things. Stranger Things; es una serie web Estadounidense de ciencia ficción, estrenada por Netflix en verano de 2016. Narra las aventuras de una pandilla de adolescentes que viven en un pequeño pueblo del medio oeste de Estados Unidos, en el que de repente suceden una serie de hechos paranormales. Sus creadores; son los hermanos Matt y Ross Duffer, que debutaron en el cine en 2015, escribiendo y dirigiendo Hidden: Terror en kingsville, la historia de un matrimonio y su hija pequeña, que sobreviven a un holocausto, encerrados en un refugio y tras 300 días allí han de enfrentar la amenaza que les espera en el exterior. La película tuvo escasa repercusión, pero; les valió para poder trabajar junto al famoso productor M. Night Shyamalan, en su serie de televisión Wayward Pines (2015). Tras esta experiencia, los hermanos decidieron que ya estaban listos para escribir su propio show e idearon esta historia, que no sólo estaba ambientada en los años 80 del siglo pasado, sino que rinde homenaje al cine de aventuras y ciencia ficción de esa época. Según los propios Duffer, querían hacer un matrimonio perfecto entre las historias humanas de Steven Spielberg y los relatos sobrenaturales de Stephen King. Sin embargo, su proyecto fue rechazado en hasta quince canales de televisión por cable, que alegaban que un argumento para adultos protagonizado por niños no funcionaría y le sugerían que lo convirtiera en un show infantil o bien centraran el trama en los personajes adultos. Pero los hermanos Duffer insistieron y finalmente fue la productora de contenidos online Netflix la que compró el guion piloto y les produjo una primera temporada. El casting para elegir a los miembros de la pandilla fue duro, los productores tuvieron que poner a prueba alrededor de mil niños actores distintos, que para la ocasión recitaron lineas de diálogo de la película Cuenta conmigo (Stand By Me en 1986), otro clásico del cine de los 80 del siglo pasado. Por fin dieron con el quinteto protagonista encabezados por una jovencísima Millie Bobby Brown, que durante el rodaje de la primera temporada tenía sólo once años. This book offers a comprehensive linguistic analysis of contemporary US television series. Adopting an interdisciplinary and multimethodological approach, Monika Bednarek brings together linguistic analysis of the Sydney Corpus of Television Dialogue with analysis of scriptwriting manuals, interviews with Hollywood scriptwriters, and a survey undertaken with university students about their consumption of TV series. In so doing, she presents five new and original empirical studies. The focus on language use in a professional context (the television industry), on scriptwriting pedagogy, and on learning and teaching provides an applied linguistic lens on TV series. This is complemented by perspectives taken from media linguistics, corpus linguistics and sociocultural linguistics/sociolinguistics. Throughout the book, multiple dialogue extracts are presented from a wide variety of well-known fictional television series, including The Big Bang Theory, Grey's Anatomy and Bones. Researchers in applied linguistics, discourse analysis, critical discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, sociolinguistics and media linguistics will find the book both stimulating and unique in its approach.

La prensa y la crítica han señalado que el mérito de la galardonada serie Mozart in the jungle: Sex, Drugs & Classical Music, reside en acercar la música clásica, concebida como "alta cultura" o cultura superior, al pueblo, entendido como masa. Nos preguntamos si esta comedia ligera, con todos los rasgos de un producto mainstream, se erige en una mirada colonialista y clasista o permite algún resquicio para la reflexión y la crítica contrahegemónicas. En otras palabras, comprobaremos si, como se pretende, el discurso de la serie supone una defensa del espíritu artístico como algo popular, una defensa del arte como algo político frente a los intereses puramente comerciales, o en cambio refuerza las dicotomías entre una cultura elevada (auténtico arte "por el arte") y una cultura inferior (banal producto de consumo), basadas en la identificación de la primera con unas élites privilegiadas y de la segunda con la clase trabajadora.


Press and critics have considered that the merit of Mozart in the jungle: Sex, Drugs & Classical Music, consists on bringing the classical music-conceived as "high culture" or superior culture-closer to the working-class, understood as mass. We wonder if this light comedy, which has all the mainstream product characteristics, raises itself as a colonialist and classist perspective or allows any chinc in order to make any counter-hegemonic thought or critic. In other words, we are going to verify if (as it attempted), the discourse of this series stands up for the artistic spirit as something popular, if it defends the art as something political against purely commercial interests or on the contrary it reforces the dichotomy between a high culture (genuin "art by art") and an inferior culture (banal consume product), based on identifying the first with elites and the second with the working-class.

Esta é a primeira parte de um estudo em dois volumes apresentado por Maíra Bianchini, no qual a autora reflete sobre os desenvolvimentos históricos que abriram caminho para a criação e o crescimento acelerado, no contexto atual, dos serviços de vídeo sob demanda em streaming (ou seja, em fluxo de mídia pela internet), considerando os elos da produção, da distribuição e da exibição do mercado audiovisual.

Ao longo dos dois volumes, a autora analisa como o posicionamento estratégico destas empresas na criação de conteúdos originais avançou inicialmente na produção de séries televisivas, buscando a inserção no mercado audiovisual que mais cresceu em termos de reconhecimento cultural e comercial neste início de século XXI, enquanto as ações de distribuição e de exibição destes empreendimentos foram construídas a partir de uma evolução no segmento do vídeo doméstico, profundamente afetado pelas transformações tecnológicas da digitalização dos meios de comunicação. A Parte I apresenta noções básicas relativas à área da economia do audiovisual e às características deste mercado, bem como explora as particularidades dos segmentos da TV aberta e da TV por assinatura. A obra se concentra na história da televisão dos Estados Unidos, país predominante no estabelecimento das lógicas e da dinâmica competitiva que regem o mercado das séries ficcionais televisivas em âmbito global.

In this article I discuss " wicked " women in contemporary pop culture, analyzing the language of the " heroines " , or protagonists, of three popular American television series: Weeds, Nurse Jackie and Saving Grace. All feature female characters who are " flawed " in some way and can be described as " non-conforming " , since they engage in behavior that would be socially and morally condemned – they deal in drugs (Weeds), are addicted to pills (Nurse Jackie) or are alcoholics (Saving Grace). While this has attracted some comment in the mainstream media, such comments are not based on any empirical research and have tended to center on these women's behavior. In contrast, the approach taken here focuses on their linguistic practices, in particular their use of " bad language " , including taboo words and swearing. The analyses show that all three female protagonists challenge stereotypical expectations about appropriate " feminine " behavior for white heterosexual Anglo-American women through their use of " bad language " , while the impact of such cultural representations depends on a range of factors.

When reasoning about the stories and dramas of television series, it is useful to resort to an ethical and anthropological criterion. This approach calls for distinguishing between an anthropological reason applicable to people in the real world and the 'dramatis personae'.

There are two coherent anthropological behaviors that may contribute to a viewers’ active position. The first one is to consider that Aristotle's Poetics and the contemporary extension of his content can rationally account for those stories and dramas, today precisely qualified as ‘tragic’.

The second one is to understand the real world and its dramatic representations, in accordance with the Leonardo Polo’s transcendental anthropology, the vision which Jürgen Habermas finds in religions, and Joseph Ratzinger - articulating reason and faith - has summed up as living 'veluti si Deus daretur'.

It has been shown that popular films and other moving images specifically address their consumers in a way that allows them to experience rich experimental flows of sensations, concepts, and feelings, similar to those experienced outside the media (Grodal 1997, 2009; Plantinga 2009, Smith 2003). However, it would be too easy to restrict the embodied aesthetics of moving images to a purely reflexive and bodily dimension. Rather, they evoke complex mental associations and embodied experiences that include both physical reactions and cognitive interpretations, which are based on cultural meanings. In film and media studies it is still a challenge to explain and systematically analyze this simultaneity of somatic and cognitive reception and of biologically and culturally based meanings. As it is documented in this volume, cognitive metaphor research can relevantly contribute to this challenge. In this paper an approach will be presented that aims at analyzing embodied gestalts of rich narrative meanings in movies and television series in terms of audiovisual metaphors. A method will be provided to identify metaphors (Fahlenbrach 2007, 2010) in an audiovisual composition both on a local and a global scale. By distinguishing audiovisual key metaphors and sub-metaphors, the global network of metaphors within an artwork will be considered. This will be exemplified in a case study of audiovisual metaphors in the television series Twin Peaks.

Son Goku. Son Goku es un guerrero Saiyajin nacido en el año 737 en el planeta Vegeta. Sus padres Bardock y Gine le pusieron el nombre de Kakaroto. Aunque existen dos versiones de su nacimiento, nosotros nos quedamos con lo fundamental. Que al nacer fue enviado al planeta tierra para derrotar a los débiles terrícolas, justo antes de que el planeta Vegeta fuese destruido por el malvado Freezer. Una vez en la tierra es encontrado y adoptado por el anciano Son Gohan, que lo llamará Goku. Su convivencia será complicada, ya que Goku es muy violento, pero gracias a un golpe en la cabeza se volverá bondadoso y un poco lento de mente. Son Gohan le enseñará artes marciales al descubrir su superfuerza y le prohibirá salir por las noches, ya que descubrió que Goku se transforma en un mono gigante ultra destructor al ver la luna llena. Pero una noche, Goku vio la luna llena sin querer y al transformarse acabó matando a su abuelo ¡qué triste! Cuando despertó no recordaba nada y al ver que su abuelo no estaba, pensó que se había transformado en la bola de dragón de 4 estrellas que su abuelo atesoraba. Goku continuó viviendo solo en las montañas acompañado por su bola de dragón abuelo, hasta que un día una chica de pelo azul apareció por su puerta. Esa chica era Bulma y quería encontrar las 7 bolas de dragón. Goku no quería darle su bola, pero Bulma lo convenció para embarcarse en la aventura de las Dragon Ball y conseguirlas todas. Por el camino se fueron encontrando con muchos rivales, pero también con muchos amigos. El malvado Pilaf provará las bolas e invoca a Cenro, el dragón sagrado, por suerte Ulom se adelanta pidiendo un deseo. Goku lo vence transformándose de nuevo en Ozaru y lo destruye todo, pero; para detenerlo le tienen que cortar el rabo y su poder se debilita. Decide entrenar con el maestro Roshi, acompañado de Krilín, quien se convertirá en su mejor amigo. Durante el entrenamiento aprende las artes del maestro y participa en un torneo, pero pierde contra Jackie Chun. Después de la derrota parte para entrenarse por el mundo donde se encontrará con nuevos amigos y enemigos. Sigue con su racha de derrotas en torneos, esta vez a manos de Ten Shin Han, pero durante las celebraciones aparece Piccolo que es derrotado por Goku. manuelverdugo.com

Le serie TV occupano nel panorama culturale odierno uno spazio fino a poco tempo fa impensabile. L’offerta si è fatta ricchissima, ce n’è per tutti i gusti e per ogni età. Ma come è nato questo fenomeno? Da «Ai confini della realtà» a «Breaking Bad», dal «Trono di spade» a «True Detective», da «Romanzo criminale» a «Gomorra», il libro segue le diverse incarnazioni della serialità mettendone a fuoco lo sviluppo all’interno dei differenti sistemi televisivi nazionali, delle logiche di produzione e dei mutamenti del genere.
