This work explores the eect of adding a new partitioning step into the traditional complex programmable logic device (CPLD) CAD flow. A novel algorithm based on Rent's rule and simulated an- nealing partitions a design before it enters the place and route stage in CPLD CAD. The resulting partitions are then placed using an enhanced placement tool. Experiments conducted on Altera'a APEX20K chips in- dicate that a partitioned placement can provide an average performance gain of 7% over flat placements.

Historically, radiologists' official written reports have functionally been proprietary communications between radiologists and referring providers. Although never secret, these reports have traditionally been archived in the medical record, with tightly controlled access. Patients rarely viewed reports directly. As patient-centered care, transparent communication, and electronic archiving have converged, however, radiologists' reports, like many other medical record components, are increasingly accessible to patients via web-based "portals." Many radiologists harbor justified anxiety about whether and how radiology reports should change in response to these portals. Direct patient access to radiology reports raises several questions, including: who are reports really for, what is their essential purpose, what content should they include or omit, what limits should be…

Researchers have proposed several hypotheses about the neuromodulator systems involved in generating P3 components of the ERP. To test some of these hypotheses, we conducted a randomized placebo-controlled crossover study in which we investigated how the late positive ERP response to deviant stimuli is modulated by (a) clonidine, an α2 agonist that attenuates baseline noradrenergic activity; and (b) scopolamine, a muscarinic antagonist of acetylcholine receptors. We collected EEG data from 18 healthy volunteers during the performance of an auditory oddball task with several active and passive task conditions. We then used temporospatial principal component analysis (PCA) to decompose the ERP waveforms. The PCA revealed two distinct late positive ERP components: the classic parietal P300 and the frontal novelty P3. Statistical analysis of the temporospatial factor scores indicated that in most conditions the amplitude of the classic P300 was increased by clonidine and scopolamine. In...

Phenotypic analysis of mutant mice is limited by lack of accurate, simple, and nondestructive in utero imaging techniques. This study evaluated the usefulness of ultrasound imaging (US) to stage fetal mouse gestational age (GA) and depict morphologic de- velopment. We imaged 16 pregnant CD-1 mice and a total of 92 fetuses with a 15-MHz US transducer from 9.5 d postcoitus

Identification of negation in electronic health records is essential if we are to understand the computable meaning of the records: Our objective is to compare the accuracy of an automated mechanism for assignment of Negation to clinical concepts within a compositional expression with Human Assigned Negation. Also to perform a failure analysis to identify the causes of poorly identified negation (i.e. Missed Conceptual Representation, Inaccurate Conceptual Representation, Missed Negation, Inaccurate identification of Negation). 41 Clinical Documents (Medical Evaluations; sometimes outside of Mayo these are referred to as History and Physical Examinations) were parsed using the Mayo Vocabulary Server Parsing Engine. SNOMED-C was used to provide concept coverage for the clinical concepts in the record. These records resulted in identification of Concepts and textual clues to Negation. These records were reviewed by an independent medical terminologist, and the results were tallied in ...

We report on the characterization of a portable, fiber-optic coupled spectroradiometer. The system was tested for radiometric stability and repeatability, wavelength calibration, stray light, linearity with optical flux, and sensitivity to ambient temperature. Many of the measurements were performed using the NIST laser-based facility for Spectral Irradiance and Radiance responsivity Calibrations using Uniform Sources (SIRCUS). The goal of this work

Age-associated changes in power and maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) were studied in a cross section of endurance trained cyclists. Subjects (n = 56) performed incremental cycling exercise, during which capillary blood lactate [La(-)] was measured. Power output increased by 30 Watts during each 5 minutes stage, with initial power output based on individual ability. When [La(-)] was >4.5 mmol·L(-1), subjects were given a 10 min recovery at a power output approximately 50% below estimated power at [La(-)]4mmol. Subjects then performed an incremental test (1 minute stages) to VO2max. Decline in VO2max was 0.65 ml·kg(-1)·min(-1)·year(-1) (r = -0.72, p < 0.01) for males, and 0.39 ml·kg(-1)·min(-1)·year(-1) (r = -0.54, p < 0.05) for females. Power at VO2max decreased by 0.048 W kg(-1)·year(-1) (r = -0.72, p…

In this work, we describe radiometric platforms able to produce realistic spectral distributions and spatial scenes for the development of application-specific metrics to quantify the performance of sensors and systems. Using these platforms, sensor and system performance may be quantified in terms of the accuracy of measurements of standardized sets of complex source distributions. The same platforms can also serve

The Department of Energy site at Hanford, WA, has been historically impacted by U and Cr from the nuclear weapons industry. In an attempt to stimulate microbial remediation of these metals, in-situ lactate enrichment experiments are ongoing. In order to bridge the gap from the laboratory to the field, we inoculated triplicate anaerobic, continuous-flow glass reactors with groundwater collected from

Pulmonary regurgitation (PR) following surgery of the right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) is not innocent and leads to significant right heart dysfunction over time. Recent studies have demonstrated that percutaneous valves can be implanted in conduit free outflow tracts with good outcomes. To evaluate in patients with severe PR - anticipated to require future pulmonary valve replacement - the feasibility and safety of pre-stenting dilated non-stenotic patched conduit-free right ventricular outflow tracts before excessive dilation occurs, followed by percutaneous pulmonary valve implantation (PPVI). Twenty seven patients were evaluated, but only 23 were deemed suitable based on the presence of an adequate retention zone ≤24mm defined by semi-compliant balloon interrogation of the RVOT. A 2 step procedure was performed: first the landing zone was prepared by deploying a bare stent, followed 2months later by valve implantation. RVOT pre-stenting with an open cell bare metal stent (...

Seven high affinity antibodies to human serum transferrin which recognize at least four different epitopes are described. Apparent dissociation constants (Kd's) have been determined for the binding of the antibodies to human transferrin in the presence and absence of iron. Small differences in reactivity were found. Five of the antibodies bind to the isolated amino-terminal half-molecule of human transferrin. Two of the antibodies appear to be to the C-terminal lobe since they bind to holo-transferrin but do not recognize the N-terminal half-molecule. Immunoblotting shows that six of the antibodies recognize both reduced and nonreduced transferrin. In addition, all of the antibodies bind with sufficiently high avidity to transferrin to make them useful as probes in studies in which binding of transferrin to the specific transferrin receptor is examined.

We describe a time-resolved, contrast-enhanced carotid MR angiographic technique using a 3D gradient-echo sequence in combination with a sensitivity-encoding scheme. We delineate the steps involved in generating the dynamic MR angiographic images, discuss issues related to image quality, and outline differences between this technique and recently reported similar methods that implement multiple parallel receivers to reduce imaging time.

To systematically compare the results of dobutamine stress echocardiography in matched groups of hypertensive and normotensive patients with anginal chest pain and normal coronary arteriograms (CPNA). University hospital. 33 patients with exertional anginal chest pain, a positive exercise stress ECG, and a completely normal coronary arteriogram; 17 had a history of systemic hypertension (14 women; mean (SD) age 57 (6) years), and 16 had no hypertensive history (12 women; age 54 (9) years). Ambulatory ECG monitoring, dobutamine stress echocardiography, and thallium-201 single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) were performed in all subjects. All patients had normal left ventricular systolic function at rest and none fulfilled the criteria for ventricular hypertrophy. Eight normotensive patients and 10 hypertensive patients had perfusion abnormalities on thallium SPECT (p = 0.61). Dobutamine infusion reproduced anginal pain in seven normotensive and seven hypertensive patient...

Obstruction of the venous pathways after Mustard repair for transposition of the great arteries is associated with an increased risk of arrhythmia and sudden death. The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of the largest (tracheal 22 x 40 mm) Wallstents in treating baffle obstructions. Retrospective analysis of patients with stented venous pathways. Eleven patients with baffle obstruction after Mustard repair for transposition of the great arteries. Stenoses were dilated with an 18 or 20 mm balloon. However, recoil was noticed in 11 patients: immediately (n = 7) or on repeat angiography (n = 4). Eighteen stents were implanted (mean (SD)) 18 (3.3) years postoperatively. After dilatation a tracheal Wallstent (11.5 F) was deployed. Relief of obstruction, haemodynamic improvement. In the inferior vena cava, 10 stents were deployed in seven baffle obstructions with an increase in diameter from 9.8 (2.4) mm to 16.5 (1.4) mm (p < 0.01) and a mean (SD) pressure gradient ...
