The handbook consists of three parts. The first chapter provides a diagnosis of older people and their competence in new technologies. This chapter also describes the ICT education programmes for older people available in the partner countries. The next chapter contains a description and results of a pedagogical experiment aimed at comparing the effectiveness of the method of teaching seniors how to use smartphones. The experiment compared the class and lesson method, which dominates the educational offer addressed to seniors, with the method consistent with the strategy of edutainment – a location-based game. The last part contains scenarios of classes dedicated to the method of location-based games as well as traditional classes and classroom games. The handbook presented to the Reader may be an interesting position for practitioners dealing with andragogy, education of the elderly or ICT education, as it contains ready-made educational programs that can be directly implemented in...

The article reflects a part of the research, which aims at designing an inventory intended for the evaluation of the attitude towards learning by the students of Lithuanian comprehensive school. Since the experience of preparing this kind of diagnostic tools in Lithuania is minimal, “SMALSI” (School motivation and learning strategies inventory; compiled by K. C. Stroud, C. R. Reynolds, 2006), an inventory designed in the USA, has been referred to. The quality of the tool has been tested under the condition of the USA; however, the application of the diagnostic tool for the social and education reality of Lithuania invokes both a scientific and a practical problem as the students’ answers directly depend on their understanding of the question. Therefore, the adaptation of culture-dependent means falls under certain requirements, analogical to the requirements raised for the original diagnostic tool. The inventory has been modified with reference to the results of the analysis of cont...

The article discusses representation of the communicative competence of an educator in online media as one of the aspects analysed in the research commissioned by the Education Development Centre and conducted in 2018. Information concerning educators that appears in the media has an impact on the society, reinforcing or changing public attitudes that are shaped by a number of factors. Social and technological changes establish higher standards for the system of education, which in turn sets higher requirements for and expectations towards educators. The communicative competence is one of the main features of the professional image of an educator; however, it is important to understand that the teacher empowerment index is proportional not only to the communicative competence of an educator but also to the attitudes towards teachers maintained in the society. Media discourse was chosen to reveal how educators are presented to the public and attitudes towards them are shaped in the s...

Concepts like mature personality, self-education and group therapy are represented in this article, with reference to scientific literature. The purpose of this paper is to reveal the benefit of group therapy in the self-educational process of a personality. Scientists offer many definitions of self-education. Self-education (or self- help) is one of the most effective elements of self-training in individual growth. It consists not only of solving a person’s actual problems but it lays the foundation for forming the stable values and skills for higher maturity and a more responsible attitude toward continual self-training. An analysis of the scientific literature detects a significant advantage of the group therapy in the self-educational process of personality. The atmosphere of group therapy creates an environment to shape new models of behavior which can be adjusted in real life outside the group. The surveys show that group therapy and self-education are identical, which expands...

Consciousness-raising seems to be a major indicator for educational policy and formation of a mature society. Therefore, the aim of this article is to reveal the meaning of consciousness-raising in a theoretical context. Accordingly, the goals of the research are formulated as such: to analyze the variety of concepts of consciousness-raising and to discuss its main assumptions and factors. Several conclusions have been singled out after analysis of philosophical, pedagogical and psychological scientific literature. First, the ambiguous concept of consciousness-raising is associated with knowledge about reality, the ability to monitor, understand, responsibly analyze ourselves, the surrounding environment, our own beliefs, values; also to analyze the meanings and outcomes of our behaviour. Usually consciousness is identified with the ability to think critically: to bracket existing knowledge and awareness, be able to sort out facts and opinions, analyze and interpret reality problems...

Critical thinking is considered a key competence, which is necessary for the citizens in participation in daily life, and in the society and enables employees to make decisions and start activities; it becomes one of the essential characteristics that employers expect their future employees to have. Scientists continuously raise the question of critical thinking (Lloyd & Bahr, 2010, Liu, Mao, Frankel, Xu, 2016 and others), what specific skills of critical thinking should be developed and how to make them adjustable in practice and remain stable, if the existing instruments of assessment are sufficient (Facione, Facione, 2013; Lai, 2011, Gudžinskienė, 2006). The existing variety of conceptions of critical thinking presupposes discussions about the skills, which are necessary for a critically thinking individual. The purpose of this presentation is to analyse the concept of critical thinking in higher education context based on multidisciplinary studies of critical thinking. In the in...

The article analyses the pedagogues’ experience in applying the model of integrated assistance to the child in school. The research involved 15 teachers responsible for coordination of the assistance to a specific child; the teachers represented three Lithuanian schools which have implemented the developed model. The pedagogues, as case coordinators, recorded the experience of implementation of the integrated assistance model in schools in their reflections. They’ve written down the reflections once per week in the form of a semi-structural electronic pedagogical diary. According to the analysis of the research data, in applying the integrated assistance model one of the major changes is the change in the learning motivation. The changes in learning motivation are related to changes in pupils’ learning outcomes, their involvement in the learning process, and school attendance. Pursuant to the research, self-esteem building is especially important for personality changes in children, and this ensured the increase of self-confidence. Improved relations between the child and his/her family and between the teachers and pupils were noticed in the relationship with the others. It is to be assumed that coordination of common actions of children, parents, teachers and other concerned assistance institutions had impact on the occurrence of these changes, as well as individualization of the assistance and anticipation of personal responsibility for a specific case management. Keywords: pupil, school, teacher, integrated assistance, individualization of assistance. DOI:  http://dx.doi.org/10.15823/p.2018.10

Scientific research data evidences that the number of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is growing in Lithuania, as general global trend, however, Lithuanian educators are still unprepared to learn students with ASD (Diržytė, Mikulėnaitė ir Kalvaitis, 2016). One of the reasons of this issue – students’ behavior problems, which significantly disturbs the process of education. The education system in Lithuania has not yet found its unified model of education for effective intervention plans for students with problem behavior, while Functional behavior assessment (FBA) is already successfully used to reduce problem behavior of children with ASD in the United States and in part of Western European countries. The purpose of this article – to explore the practice of Western countries in the application of FBA procedures for the purposes of developing interventions for students with ASD. The meta-analysis of secondary data was performed for the purposes of this research. The art...

To better understand and analyze the education of evidence-based practice, it is necessary to review the context and premises of the formation of evidence-based practice itself. The beginning of the evidence-based practice movement in the teaching of health professionals’ dates back to 1910 and looking at the health care system; first, there was evidence-based medicine. In 1990, Sackett's initiative at McMaster University in Canada, it was decided to change the term "evidence-based medicine" to "evidence-based practice" (Mackey & Bassendowski, 2017; Thom & Eaves, 2015). In nursing, the beginning of evidence-based practice is linked to the reforms of nursing science and practice by the first nursing researcher, Florence Nightingale, from 1854 to 1910, although the term of “evidence-based practice” was not yet known at the time. The professional training of nurses as one of the leading health professionals is related to health policy and the development of nurs...

Aim. The aim of this research is to examine how critical thinking is reflected in Lithuanian higher education study programmes and what conceptual model(s) of critical thinking are used by study programme  makers. Methods. The subject of the study encompasses 8 higher education study programmes and their subjects. They are analysed based on a constructed conceptual framework, which defines 9 critical thinking skills and 18 critical thinking dispositions. Results. Analysis, evaluation and decision making are the most common critical thinking skills embedded in the goals of a study course and its learning outcomes. Explanation, interpretation and making inferences are less pronounced. Dispositions are listed rarely and in quite an indistinct way. Only open-mindedness and honesty have clear expression and statement in study programmes, though to a lesser extent. Dispositions such as concern for every person, inquisitiveness and flexibility are very fragmented. Conclusions. For the mean...

Access to education and support for a learner is among the most important educational policy and management issues in the context of educational reform. In many European countries, both academics and practitioners are looking for optimal ways to ensure the child's well-being through the implementation of the principle of access to education, which, as it is known, contributes to reducing social exclusion and, at the same time, increasing academic success. One of the possible means to implement these goals is the idea of the all-day school. Several patterns of the implementation of this idea in Europe can be detected. However, there is often a lack of arguments about the meaningfulness and feasibility of creating such all-day school models. With a view to solving that problem from the perspective of stakeholders and applying a strategy of case study, a comprehensive analysis was carried out in order to find out the need for education, health, social and cultural services for chil...
