Written for public at large, but useful also for scholars, this paper describes the famous three roman domes of Baiae (Campania, Italy) that represent as many moments in the evolution of Roman architecture. Recent interpretations suggest thattwo of these monuments could be linked to the "Stagnum Neronis" and another similar feature on the Glass flasks of the "Baiae Group", but none of them goes back to that period and the second, traditionally anonymous stagnum, had instead its proper name, so the mentioned thesis can't be sustained.

This article summarizes eight years of research conducted on the submerged city of Baiae, in the Phlegraean Fields. The new data collected provide a better knowledge of submerged ruins. Conspicuous elements have been added to the archaeological map: among others, in the mirror of water dominated by the Aragonese Castle, the imposing remains of quays, "piscinae" and reception rooms belonged to an imperial palace.

No Emperor had been bitten more sorely than Hadrian by the bug of "aedificandi voluptas". Baiae, the queen of watering places, must certainly have appeared on the Emperor's list of projects. According to some scholars, Hadrian was architect himself, an architect who left an indelible mark on the history of Roman architecture. Unfortunately, the only sure indication given by literary sources on the Emperor at Baiae, concerns his death on July 10, 138 A D.
Archaeological data are in evident contrast with the scant written information: the so-called "Temple of Venus" close to the modern port and a "Nymphaeum" behind it, were surely built according to Hadrian's specifications. Both of them are highly refined and present new architectural experimentations. This article includes those important buildings and the submerged villa belonged to the Calpurnii Pisones, entirely rebuild, with original solutions, by an architect well aware of his capabilities.

This paper concerns a five-years research campaign conducyed on the submerged ruins of Baiae, the famous ancient thermal town on the Gulf of Naples.
The article includes the objective data gathered in the course of direct investigations, which led to the drawing up of a new archaeological map of submerged Baiae: the discoveries brought to light range from the reconstruction of the ancient topographic map to the interpretation of important sectors of the town plan, moreover, have been recognised new, elaborate architectural shapes.
