The military settlement of Valdetorres stands as an interesting site in the historical narrative of the Roman conquest of Hispania. The morphology of its wall, the plan of its interior constructions and, above all, its artifactual record confirm it as a recurrent and multiphase fortress of the Republic. The chronological adjustment, based on the analysis of its material contexts, allows it to be considered as one more historical document. It is a palpable sample of the intense war activity in a territory – the western peninsula – especially significant due to the treatment that classical sources give to the perennial Lusitanian conflict. Each phase involves an occupation – or reoccupation – of the establishment by the legions. This Is evident in the ceramic component of the whole sequence, which derives from an official, standardized and particular supply system, common to other contemporary conflict points and logistics centers. On the other hand, these occupations are an unequivocal symptom of military actions, of the need to defend certain interests, to have strategic bases in reconnaissance campaigns or to support the movement of troops and supplies. Therefore, we see that the founding of the Valdetorres camp, at an undetermined moment in the third quarter of the II BC, must have been the consequence of some of the Roman offensive tactics during theLusitanian War. From then on, the different phases of the settlement fit with punitive actions against the Lusitanians and, finally, perhaps, the Sertorian conflict.

New finds of bones of the Egyptian Mongoose (Herpestes ichneumon), one from Portugal and one from Spain, were directly C dated to the first century AD. While the Portuguese specimen was found without connection to the Chalcolithic occupation of the Pedra Furada cave where it was recovered, the Spanish find, collected in the city of Mérida, comes from a ritual pit that also contained three human and 40 dog burials. The finds reported here show that the Egyptian mongoose, contrary to the traditional and predominant view, did not first arrive in the Iberian Peninsula during the Muslim occupation of Iberia. Instead, our findings are consistent with the hypothesis that the species was first introduced by the Romans, or at least sometime during the Roman occupation of Hispania. Therefore, radiocarbon dating of new archaeological finds of bones of the Egyptian Mongoose (Herpestes ichneumon) in the Iberian Peninsula push back the confirmed presence of the species in the region by approximat...

The production of silver in Hispania has cornered a prominent place in the ancient texts referring to the Republican period in the Iberian Peninsula and in the historiographical tradition of the Roman conquest. However, lead has not enjoyed the same attention, despite its geology, mining and metallurgical processes that has a very close relationship
with it. This paper is incident on a close and continuous dialectic between both metals, giving the lead a very important role, starring in certain geological and unavoidable activity in other areas. The analysis of the archaeological record leads us to assess the potential of this production as “strategic resource”, key to understanding the Roman expansion in this part of Hispania. The mining-metallurgical activities, performed in some industrial or business networks and circuits, seems
to acquire a geographical projection that goes beyond this part of the north facade of Sierra Morena, fully joined with the economic policy of Rome itself, forced to defend their interests at all times.

Abstract After a period of important splendor during Roman times, the second half of the nineteenth century causes the revival of the Spanish mining. This is caused by the demand for raw materials for the growing European industrialization. During this period, the politicial strategy of the state favors the penetration in the country of foreign capital and technology to the mineral and metal production. In this context, the mining district of Azuaga became the head of world in the production of the lead. All activity generated around it will leave an unmistakable mark on the countryside and in the urban, social and economic fabric of the area. It material dimension still exists and can be recognized by many wells, pits, rails, furnaces and slag heaps, which mark the fields, that now again, are being cultivated. As a historical document of the first order, will form part of our heritage inventory.
