Monte Pellegrino is one of the most significant complexes within the prehistoric settlement in Sicily; it is a vast territory, but well delimited, where an extraordinary richness in archaeological sites is attested, spread out between the central area of the relief and all its slopes. As regards to the prehistoric age are documented both outdoor settlements and, above all, inside caves, frequented since the Mesolithic. The archaeological knowledge of Monte Pellegrino in prehistory is the result of decades of systematic investigations that in this article will provide a further contribution to research, increasing the previous knowledge with new elements and with an unpublished photographic and graphic documentation. The study wants to put at the centre of the interest of the scholars the extraordinary history of this mountain, since always a strong and peculiar element of the historical landscape of Palermo. MONTE PELLEGRINO NELLA PREISTORIA Trentadue anni or sono vedeva la luce Le grotte di Monte Pellegrino, un volume che Giuseppe Crispi, presidente del Club Alpino Siciliano, volle che scrivessi per non disperdere un patrimonio speleoarcheologico di conoscenze acquisite in decenni di ricerche. Fino ad allora (1985) le esplorazioni nel Pellegrino avevano consentito di accertare e catastare 48 cavità a sviluppo orizzontale e otto zubbi 2 a sviluppo verticale; ai nostri giorni il numero si è accresciuto di altri due zubbi e sei grotte, queste ultime di interesse archeologico. Questo articolo, per motivi di spazio e di lacune esplorative, fornisce "materiali" per approfondire l'argomento; non si sostituisce al volume, bensì, semplicemente lo aggiorna.

Monte Pellegrino is one of the most significant complexes for the prehistoric settlement in Sicily; it is a vast territory, but well delimited, where an extraordinary richness in archaeological sites is attested, spread out between the central area of the relief and all its slopes. Il nome tofet lo troviamo per la prima volta nella Bibbia, nel libro del profeta Geremia (7,30; circa 600 a.C.) e ne viene spiegato il significato: " Hanno costruito l'altura della tofet, che si trova nella valle di Ben-Hinnon, per bruciare nel fuoco i loro figli, cosa che io non comandai e che non mi è mai venuta in mente. Perciò, ecco, giorni verranno-oracolo di Jahve-nei quali non si chiamerà più Tofet né valle di Ben-Hinnon, ma vallo dello Scannatoio. Si seppellirà nella Tofet, perché non ci sarà altro luogo 1 " Il tofet o tophet è santuario a cielo aperto o luogo sacro, del mondo dei fenicio-punici dove si praticava il rito della incinerazione dei bambini le cui ceneri con resti non del tutto combusti, ed anche di piccoli animali venivano custoditi entro urne o vasi funerari in terracotta all'interno delle quali trovavano posto oggetti votivi. In passato si è ritenuto che su un altare, nel tofet, venisse sacrificato il primogenito maschio; recenti indagini istologiche hanno constatato che, almeno nella maggior parte dei casi si è trattato di bambini nati morti o deceduti per cause naturali. Le urne contenente i resti venivano poste nel luogo sacro, al suolo entro conche scavate nel terreno o formando intorno ad esse una sorta di cassetta litica.
