Monte Pellegrino is one of the most significant complexes for the prehistoric settlement in Sicily; it is a vast territory, but well delimited, where an extraordinary richness in archaeological sites is attested, spread out between the central area of the relief and all its slopes. As regards to the prehistoric age are documented both outdoor settlements and, above all, inside caves, frequented since the Mesolithic. The archaeological knowledge of Monte Pellegrino in prehistory is the result of decades of systematic investigations that in this article will provide a further contribution to research, increasing the previous knowledge with new elements and with an unpublished photographic and graphic documentation. The study wants to put at the centre of the interest of the scholars the extraordinary history of this mountain, since always a strong and peculiar element of the historical landscape of Palermo.

«Funera l Feast» Sets of Jugs in ChernIa khiv Culture Burials
Cherniakhiv culture burials from the Forest-steppe Dnipro River left bank region, which included more than one jug, are
analysed within the context of study of drinking vessels sets used during the afterlife feast. There are 12 such assemblages in
Cherniakhiv culture burials known today. Judging from the dating, sets of jugs in the Dnipro River left bank area appeared
in the first half of the 4th c. and their amount raised in the second half of this century. They are found in the burials both with
the Scythian and Sarmatian, and with German ethnic features. Such burials in the region are peculiar with the presence of a
significant number of vessels (from 8 to 16) within the inventory’s structure. Insufficient anthropological research does not
allow the authors to attribute such assemblages by sex.
In order to conduct the comparative analysis, the Cherniakhiv culture materials were also drawn: Sântana de Mureş
culture from the territory of the Dnipro River right bank area, Moldova and Romania. They presented similar low percentage
of burials with the jugs sets within the burial grounds, at the same time, showing certain regional peculiarities concerning
both the jugs types in such sets, and the territorial closeness to the provinces of Roman Empire.
Ethnic features of certain burials can show that the tradition of placing the jugs sets into the grave goods structure
could have no ethnic «commitments», and perhaps was imported or appeared as a result of internal development. It can
be confirmed by the presence of jugs sets, in fact, at the whole area of culture Cherniakhiv-S ântana de Mureş. At the same
time, the dynamics of this tradition’s spread in time (for the Dnipro River left bank area) allow assuming its appearance
and development since the first half of the 4th c. BC. Quantitative and in some cases qualitative peculiarities of the vessels
assemblages in such burials abandon the authors to the idea of their belonging to the high stratum. It can be indirectly
testified also by relatively insignificant percentage of such burials in general bulk of graves at burial grounds.

This new contribution aims to provide an overview of the scientific and popular activities carried out, during 2016, by Sezione Archeologica of Soprintendenza BB.CC.AA. of Palermo. In relation to the previous contribution about the activities of 2015, we have tried to create more extensive forms, also correlated with an essential bibliography. Once again, above all the daily work of protecting the territory and the interventions of preventive archaeology (both public and private) have allowed to highlight significant results and archaeological innovations that concern the entire territory of the province of Palermo; of course, the contributions are preliminary reports, however we believe it is right to make available to the scientific community the new data collected, even if still in the study phase. Moreover, the Unità Operativa Beni Archeologici has been engaged – as it has been previously – in activities of scientific valorisation and communication, also with important repercussions in the field of social commitment, confirming the role of cultural "control" that this Institute plays, in spite of everything.

– In the period from 1952–1967, during the systematic archaeological excavations of the area of the eastern necropolis of Naissus, in the modern day city quarter of Jagodin Mala, in Niš, a large number of glass objects was found. A representative portion of the findings was published in various publications, while the other findings, which belong to the study collection of the National Museum in Niš, have not been the subject of any separate study. These are new kinds of findings, such as glass lamps, window panes and tesserae, and the collection also includes the familiar, standard repertoire of glass vessels of the Late Antiquity period. The findings come from the grave units, the cemetery basilica with its crypt, and the archaeological layers from the area of the necropolis in Jagodin Mala (4th-7th c.). Besides the typological-chronological, as well as the topographic analysis, the paper also presents a complete image of the glass objects from the area of the necropolis, used in the burial and liturgical practices of the population of Naissus in Late Antiquity.

La fouille du site de Griesheim-sur-Souffel Flaschen (site 4.2) et de
Pfulgriesheim Kammeracker (site 4.2bis) appartient aux opérations
préalables au projet du contournement ouest de Strasbourg (COS).
La fouille s’est déroulée en 2018, sur une surface totale de près de
4 ha, sur le versant sud d’une crête bordant les rives de la Souffel.
Des occupations domestiques et funéraires de plusieurs phases des
périodes pré- et protohistoriques ont été mises à jour.
L’occupation la plus ancienne remonte au Néolithique ancien.
Quelques fosses rubanées ont été repérées dans le sud du décapage, de
part et d’autre du niveau de l’actuel chemin d’exploitation. Celles-ci
environnaient la sépulture d’un enfant probablement contemporaine
de cette occupation, dont la dépouille semble avoir été l’objet d’un
épandage d’ocre rouge.
Le Néolithique moyen a également laissé des traces. D’abord les
restes d’au moins six sépultures de la culture Grossgartach ont été
mises à jour. Celles-ci apparaissaient de manière très superficielle
dans le décapage et étaient par conséquent assez mal conservées. Dans
certains cas, seuls des os longs en place témoignaient encore de la
présence d’une tombe. Certaines d’entre elles étaient accompagnées
de céramique ou encore, dans un cas, d’un probable brassard en dent
de suidé caractéristique de la période. Par ailleurs, des structures
domestiques du Néolithique moyen (occupation Bischheim) ont
également été découvertes sur les surfaces fouillées.
Un petit ensemble funéraire de la période du Bronze ancien a
également été mis au jour. Sans doute incomplet en raison de son
positionnement à proximité immédiate de la limite septentrionale de
fouille, l’ensemble est composé de cinq tombes avérées. Une sixième
sépulture a certainement été détruite par le creusement d’une fosse
du Bronze final puisque cette dernière contenait des restes humains
épars ainsi qu’un petit pendentif en os attribués au Bronze ancien.
Hormis cet objet, le mobilier accompagnant les défunts se limite
à un seul élément de parure en alliage cuivreux, une spirale ou un
petit anneau, retrouvé au niveau de la tête d’un individu immature.
Malgré son indigence, les comparaisons typologiques effectuées sur
la dotation funéraire et une série de datation 14C permettent de
placer ce petit ensemble funéraire dans une phase ancienne du Bronze
ancien local, étape encore rarement mise en évidence dans la région.
Une fosse polylobée de dimensions moyennes, située dans la moitié
nord du décapage, a livré une importante quantité de mobilier
céramique attribué au Bronze moyen. Onze autres petites structures
d’habitat éparses, souvent indigentes en mobilier, sont rattachées
à cette période. Un individu immature est inhumé en limite
d’occupation.
L’étape moyenne du Bronze final est bien représentée sur le site
par 25 structures dont 14 silos et 8 fosses polylobées. L’occupation
semble se développer en deux pôles, le premier au nord du chantier à
proximité de l’ensemble funéraire du Bronze ancien et un second dans
la partie médiane, au niveau du grand enclos laténien. Ce deuxième
pôle a livré d’importants lots de mobiliers céramiques de style Rhin-
Suisse-France Orientale. Des enduits de parois architecturales ont
été identifiés. Un silo accueille une inhumation ; c’est une pratique
peu courante pour cette période.
Nous pouvons également mentionner deux ensembles funéraires
datés du milieu du premier âge du Fer (Hallstatt D). Le premier,
sur la commune de Griesheim-sur-Souffel, compte sept tombes.
Le mobilier associé aux défunts n’était pas très abondant mais
caractéristique du milieu de la période du Hallstatt : bracelets en
lignite, bracelets en alliage cuivreux, boucles d’oreille en ruban,
« spirales » en alliage cuivreux etc. L’ensemble a vraisemblablement
été perturbé par l’installation d’un grand fossé d’enclos à la période
finale de La Tène.
Le second ensemble, se situe sur la commune de Pfulgriesheim (site
4.2bis), à 550 m au nord-est du précédent. Celui-ci comprend au
moins 22 sépultures dont la disposition concentrique laisse supposer
la présence d’un monument circulaire dont il ne resterait aucune
trace (tumulus). Son organisation spatiale montre que les défunts
inhumés en périphérie étaient déposés dans des fosses plus ajustées
et généralement dépourvu de mobilier. En revanche, les inhumations
implantées au centre semblent les plus privilégiées. Il s’agit de
grandes fosses, dans lesquelles les défunts ont été déposés dans des
contenants en bois, certains enveloppés dans des contenants en cuir
ou en fourrure. Ils étaient également richement parés : ceintures,
torques, bracelets en alliage cuivreux et en roche noire, boucles
d’oreilles…) et certains objets étaient conçus en matériaux exotiques
(corail, ambre) confirmant sans doute leur statut social privilégié.
La période du début du second âge du Fer (La Tène AB) est
également attestée sur le site, de manière relativement marquée.
Il s’agit d’une des occupations prégnantes du site avec un nombre
important de structures associées à des mobiliers conséquents
(principalement céramique, métallique, faunique et de nombreux
fragments de torchis brûlés). De nature domestique, l’occupation
est constituée par quelques fosses et surtout silos dont certains ont
livré un mobilier détritique abondant. Quelques fonds de cabanes,
une inhumation en silo ainsi qu’un dépôt animal appartiennent à
cette occupation. L’étude des mobiliers permet d’y envisager un
phasage chronologique avec une phase ancienne (Hallstatt D3/La
Tène A1) et une phase récente (La Tène A2-B1).
Enfin, la fin du second âge du fer (La Tène moyenne et finale) est
visuellement la plus marquante avec le grand enclos quadrangulaire
situé en partie médiane du décapage. Large d’environ 1m à 1,5 m,
il accuse une profondeur conservée de 0,5 à 0,75 m. Le mobilier
piégé dans le comblement indique la phase moyenne et finale de la
période gauloise (La Tène C2-D1a). Ce fossé semble fonctionner
avec un grand bâtiment sur 4 poteaux (environ 36 m² au sol et
dont l’orientation coïncide avec le fossé), un bâtiment excavé sans
aménagement visible ainsi qu’une grande fosse polylobée de plus
de 30 m de long et orientée selon un axe NE/SO.

In January of 1958 four rectangular graves with inhumations were identified through rural works carried out in Vale da Palha (Sesimbra).
Eduardo da Cunha Serrão came in the field and was informed that all the skeletons had a vase with them. These data were published in 1974, and the necropolis was dated in the late roman times, IV century AD. This chronology was based in a graffito incised in one of the vases that was assimilated to a M of the Latin alphabet. Only two of the three vases recovered are now available to study. They are hemispheric bowls and they could be included in Iron Age Grey Polish Pottery category. In morphologic terms, they correspond to the most frequently form of this pottery, present in almost every orientalised sites of the Iberian Peninsula. Both graffiti could be also related with a Mediterranean tradition.
The presence of an Iron Age necropolis in the area isn’t a surprise, because in the Estuary of Sado’s river the remains of communities with a Mediterranean origin are well known.

BURIAL WITH
«
CHARON’S OBOL» FROM SHYSHAKY CEMETERY OF CHERNYAKHIVSKA CULTUREPublished is the burial 39 from Shyshaky burial ground of Chernyakhivska culture (Poltava Oblast). Buried was a 25—30-year-old woman put in a grave along the east-west line, extended and with her head to the west. Western part of the grave is destroyed by a trench for the pipe leading to sewage treatment structures.The buried was accompanied by a glass transparent cup with profiled bottom and grinded ovals on the body (two rows of  big ovals placed vertically on the cup and two rows of small ovals placed horizontally). The direct analogy for the cup is an example from Setvedt burial ground on the territory of Norway. This example is dated by E. Straume back to the stage D 2 according to Scandinavian chronology. I.O. Gavritukhin refers their usage to the 5

c. On the authors’ opinion, the date of the cup from the burial 39 can be narrowed to the first half of the 5
th
c. A coin was situated under the bottom of the cup. It was a denarius of the Emperor Marcus Aurelius to which a small cloth  was adhered preserved owing to oxidizing process on the coin. The coin and the cup were put into the right hand of the buried. The authors consider such location to be not occasional and apparently corresponding to the notions about the journey to the world of the dead. A coin put into the hand can be preliminary interpreted as a Charon’s obol and the glass cup as a sign marking the participation of the dead in the feast in the other world.Both coins, and glass cups are found in the Late Roman burials at both Barbarian and Ancient Greek sites, though direct analogies of the recorded element of the burial rite in the grave 39 of Shyshaky burial ground is not known yet. Such combination in one burial is unique for Chernyakhivska culture to which Shyshaky burial ground belonged, and this fact complicates interpretation.Uniqueness of the burial 39, as well as the late as for Chernyakhivska culture date of the 5

c. Setvedt series (Luhy type) glass cup usage enlarges the number of Chernyakhivska culture sites on the territory of the Dnipro River left bank forest-steppe area which belong to the period after the Huns arrival. Discovering the new sites can indicate that invasion of the Huns could have no catastrophic consequences for forest-steppe population on the left bank of the Dnipro River represented by Chernyakhivska culture, which existed after this event for a certain time.

No âmbito dos trabalhos de minimização de impactes arqueológicos do projecto de Aproveitamento Hidroa-
grícola de Monte Novo, foram identi1cadas e intervencionadas duas necrópoles de cronologia Alto - Medieval. Estas
caracterizam-se pela tipologia arquitectónica das sepulturas: em caixa, utilizando cerâmica de construção e blocos
pétreos, sendo a cobertura realizada com o recurso a lajes de xisto e cerâmica de construção. Não foram identi1cados
vestígios osteológicos.

En l’état actuel des recherches, la nécropole du Hameau Gréard, dont l’étendue paraît extrêmement circonscrite, semble s’apparenter à celle d’un groupe familial ou rural limité. Ainsi, sur les 2,5 à 3 siècles d’utilisation de la nécropole, la quantité d’individu déposée apparaît très faible avec une moyenne de 2 dépôts par siècle dans l’emprise des ouvertures.
Tous les éléments présentés attestent qu’il ne s’agit définitivement pas de la nécropole attendue de l’agglomération secondaire limitrophe. Son intérêt archéologique ne s’en trouve pour autant pas dévalué puisque la petite nécropole signale, pour la première fois, l’existence, dans un environnement proche de la  bourgade gallo-romaine, d’indices d’occupations liés à la fin de la période gauloise.
