    A framework is developed to enable transition from a typical real estate agency towards an e-business enabled business environment, based on an agency configuration located in Townsville, Australia. This transition is modeled according to a number of stages. In the strategic audit stage, a TOWS matrix is suggested which combines Porter’s Five Forces Model of Competition, adapted with a SWOT analysis. The next stage of an e-business case development for this real estate setting differentiates among inside partners, nearside partners, and external partners. Stage three states the composition of the systems analysis team, whereas in stage four the system architecture and infrastructure are specified, including a number of relevant legislative issues. Subsequently, the web interface design-stage is elaborated on, including accessing issues by different user groups. Two extreme examples of customer interfacing are presented to illustrate the need for the interface to be flexible, informa...

    Supply chain integration (SCI) among internal functions within a company, and external trading partners within a supply chain, has received increasing attention from academicians and practitioners in recent years. SCI consists of internal integration of different functions within a company and external integration with trading partners. While both supply chain internal and external integration have been studied extensively, our understanding of what influences SCI and the relationship between internal and external integration is still very limited. This paper argues that external integration with customers and suppliers is simultaneously influenced by internal integration and relationship commitment to customers and suppliers. Internal integration enables external integration because organizations must first develop internal integration capabilities through system-, data-, and process-integration, before they can engage in meaningful external integration. At the same time, before ex...

    Numerous articles and books have described how to build "effective" websites, but, very little actual research has investigated the impact of website design features on Internet browsing and purchase behaviour. This research addresses this issue by developing an integral design framework based on Quality Function Deployment (QFD), which links the marketing features of the product or service to be promoted (sold) to each different market segment, to core functionalities of the web interface that is to promote the product or service. The web interface-functionalities are then translated into technical web design features and web design functions to effectively promote the product, and hence induce more sales. The framework is illustrated through a generic example of promoting a mobile phone on the web to three differing customer group segments. This paper sets a research agenda for varying website design interfaces, thus enabling 'one-on-one' Web browsing and the alt...

    Service industries are radically transforming the manner in which firms operate within the context of globalisation and service delivery mechanisms, thereby creating new service industry and market opportunities. Innovations in technology, integration with computers and telecommunications and the use of internet are viewed not only as a powerful facilitating mechanism for service organizational growth, but also as drivers for creating new service markets. They are seen as

    A pilot hybrid vertical/horizontal-portal for regionally-based real estate agents (RREAs) in Australia, denoted as ProjectLink (PL) is designed and developed. Duplication across multiple regions of Australia as a 'low-cost' , value-added solution is proposed. Furthermore an e-business medium is developed whereby even very small RREAs, or sole operators, can efficiently operate within the region, in conjunction/competition with major national e-business real estate portals. The three-tier architecture for this on-line real estate solution includes the: • 'Client Tier', or front-office customer interface; • 'Middle Tier', or business intelligence and knowledge management systems, • 'Data Tier', or data repository of all relevant value chain information. Additional relevant information regarding the totality of the real estate decision includes legal and architecture services, surveying, government regulations and policies applicable to the region. A dri...

    AbstractPurpose - The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how small businesses may deploy a formalised Stage-Gate approach to new product development (NPD). The original Stage-Gate framework was modified to better suit a small business B2B environment in the seafood industry, and was subsequently applied to a small vertically-integrated crab catching, processing and marketing business.Design/methodology/approach - This paper uses a case study methodology. The method used at each stage of the Stage-Gate framework, as well as the time and location details, the people and skills involved, and the evaluative criteria applied for NPD are outlined and discussed; and subsequently synthesized in a modified framework.Findings - The modified Stage-Gate approach was shown to be an effective NPD method, allowing for 92 initial product concepts to be narrowed down to three commercially viable and acceptable products, over a period of less than 11 months. Cost and time were minimised by the f...

    Service organizations increasingly organize themselves and operate on a value chain level. This creates important challenges and opportunities, which call for a realignment of strategic focuses, in particular with respect to the impact of technovation on service creation and services modus operandi, their resulting service classification, and the restructuring amongst different service value chain industries. This research builds on a recently developed classification scheme, referred to as the Services Cubicle, that transcends current industry boundaries and includes upcoming service business trends in technovation. The paper subsequently illustrates a variety of service industry examples in order to clarify the resulting service classifications, taking into account deployment of varying degrees of technovation in that industry.

    Several service classifications based on servicespecific attributes, service delivery, channel strategies, marketing and management have evolved in response to the dynamics of the service industry. Service-specific attributes necessitate the need for strategic and operational focus, whereas technological advancements have significantly contributed towards providing different channels for delivery, increasing flexibility, improving quality and reducing time and distance. These advancements drive organizations to organize themselves and operate on a value chain level, in response to new ways in which services can be marketed, branded, operated and delivered. This creates important challenges and opportunities, which call for a realignment of strategic focuses, in particular with respect to the impact of technovation (technology, channels, and organizational structures) on services modus operandi and their resulting service classification. This paper builds on, and illustrates a recent...

    Integrating complex business networks in Tourism is a wicked problem. Many different business owners have various goals and management approaches. A tourist network is often managed through coordination and partnerships because the sheer complexity of trying to be competitive makes little sense when so many businesses have a common goal. In this paper we explore how thinking in network terms in tourist business networks actually sheds light on how to manage wicked problems in general. In particular, we focus on how the network approach to managing complex networks in business may produce leverage points for synthesising managerial tension points between partners and thereby facilitate innovation systems. We argue that the network approach may shed light on how to build platforms for gaining traction and synthesis in wicked problems. We conclude with suggestions for future research.

    In order to succeed in highly competitive markets undergoing rapid technological advancement, professionals and academics have started to realise the importance of building dynamic capabilities. In the context of service companies, this is even more relevant as service firms are increasingly dependent delivering end to end services to their customers by integrating their core competence with other firms within a service value network. Thus, the necessity to investigate the dynamics of collaboration including partnering with their customers has implications for managers. As evident from literature as well as industry experience, collaboration offers unique opportunities to the partners when creating, designing and delivering new services. Value is co-created whilst attempting to combine, mobilise and realign complimentary resources and skills.; ;

    IntroductionThe innovation process is undergoing significant disruption in many organizations (Pisano, 2015). Due to the speed of technological innovations and product lifecycles becoming shorter and shorter, companies are facing the need to speed up their innovation process (Enkel et al., 2009; Dahlander & Gann, 2010; Gassmann et al.,2010). Many companies nowadays start to use crowd intelligence to crowdsourcing to obtain ideas, feedback, and solutions to develop and initiate corporate activities (Diener & Piller, 2013; Gartner, 2013; Fuller 2010) and to extend the existing knowledge base. Nevertheless, little is known about the use of crowds in the assessment of disruptive ideas (Christensen, 1997; Christensen & Raynor, 2003; Pisano, 2015) outside the current use of crowdsourcing in business design. Palacios et al. 2015 present five emerging research themes on crowdsourcing (1) problem solving (2) learning paradigms (3) open innovation program (4) new product development, and (5) ...

    Innovation in services can be regarded as an inter-play of service concepts, service delivery practices, client interfaces, and service delivery technologies. Furthermore, innovations in services are increasingly brought to the market by networks of firms, selected for their unique capabilities and operated in a coordinated manner, referred to as a service system or service value network (SVN). Bringing such service innovations to market by a network of firms requires extensive coordination and integration of data, information/knowledge and processes, while ensuring strategic alignment of partnering firms. In this research we examine how Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), and its effect on Information Technology Infrastructure Flexibility (ITIF), acts as an enabler for recently identified organizational drivers of services innovation in a service system, namely Collaborative Architecture Management (CAM) and Collaborative Organizational Infrastructure (COI).

    Business simulations are a powerful way to provide experiential learning that is focussed, controlled, and concentrated. Inherent in any simulation, however, are numerous assumptions that determine feedback, and hence the lessons learnt. In this conceptual paper we describe some common cost assumptions that are implicit in simulation design and discuss the implications for the lessons that are learnt from the simulation. In particular, concerns are raised about misconceptions that may arise when the assumptions are not recognised. Examples are drawn from a popular business simulation. We conclude that, while there are advantages from both simple and sophisticated approaches to costing, the impact on profits can be huge. When the assumptions are not explicit, they can send signals about cost behaviour which are inconsistent with reality. We recommend that when using a business simulation the facilitator explicitly recognise the assumptions, and thereby recognise the generalisations t...

    Purpose The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the development of key supply chain capabilities in the Indian public sector-run liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) supply chain. This case study has relevance to emerging markets grappling with problems caused by monopolies and subsidies. Furthermore, this case study not only aims to improve operations of the LPG supply chain, but also re-designs its supply network to meet customers’ expectations. It illustrates value creation through growth in non-domestic sales, a reduction in consumption of subsidized LPG as a consequence of better understanding of customer needs and customer diversity, process re-engineering and deployment of ICT systems, and change management and capability building across various LPG stakeholders. Design/methodology/approach An interpretive research methodology is applied, using an illustrative single case study of the Indian public sector-run LPG supply chain. The research methodology is iterative and explorator...

    Many initiatives are being undertaken to create additional value in real estate transactions by including a Web presence and virtual searching facilities. This paper develops a structured approach of translating the impact of the Internet as an enabling technology on business strategies, business model development and business infrastructure, and indicates a preferred approach of strategic progression. This is an important first step in allowing the real estate industry in major metropolitan areas in Australia to reinvent itself, and to allow individual players in the industry to distinguish themselves through strategy. The paper also addresses foundation concepts of Internet-enabled competitive strategy, business models, Web services software architecture-based IT strategy, and convergent business architecture that combines physical and virtual customer interactions, The strategic positioning matrix, linked with the company's defined technographic market segments, provides an additional avenue to competitive advantage.

    Purpose –The purpose of this paper is to develop a conceptual framework for a wider Tourism Value Ecology (TVE) consisting of intermediaries, industry partners, and also various stakeholders to extend and/or modify the critical factors in a TVE. Design/methodology/approach – This is a conceptual paper using a thorough literature review approach, culminating in an overview of the managerial issues involved in a tourism value ecology. Findings – The first contribution of our research is a comprehensive study of the role of a TSC/TVC within a destination as embedded in a TVE. A second contribution is the development of a future cross-disciplinary research framework for TVE by synthesising and highlighting the critical issues at play when conceptualising a broad value ecology. Finally, the critical issues identified in this work may help contribute to the development of TVE theory by refining and extending these issues into future theoretical models that can be validated. PurposeThis paper aims to present a unified approach for effective capacity management, with the flexibility to position the organization across differing market‐orientations, anywhere from produce‐to‐stock to purchase‐and‐produce‐to‐order.Design/methodology/approachThe unified planning system combines capacity management with the external market through the customer order decoupling point (CODP). The approach starts by determining the CODP, using commonality and effect‐cause‐effect analysis. The resulting CODP information is then used to determine the optimal master production schedule (medium‐term), as well as the detailed schedule (short‐term) at the bottleneck resource, using mathematical programming; to support decisions across different planning horizons in an integrated fashion.FindingsThis unified approach was applied to an electronics manufacturing company in the Netherlands. The unified capacity planning system not only reduces the number of capacity problems to be solved ...
