The bushhopper Phymateus leprosus (Fabricius) in the field shows a special appetite for the milkweed Asclepias fruticosa. Asclepiadaceae, like Apocynaceae and Scrophulariaceae, contain cardiac glycosides. Raw and purified extracts of these plants phagostimulate larval and adult P. leprosus. We also screened natural and half-synthetic compounds found in those plant extracts. While saponins and sapogenins did not stimulate the animals, many cardiac glycosides and aglycones, offered on filter paper, proved to be phagostimulants.

The ever-increasing interest in the biological background and the physiological causes of social behavior in animals and man has led to an expansion of social research in ethology and its entry into the neighboring disciplines of psychology and the social sciences. From the very beginning, it has been the main aim of ethology to study the selective consequences of a given behavior. One way to discover the adaptive significance of a character is to compare similar characters that have evolved independently in different groups of animals (for example, wings in insects, birds, or bats). Therefore, we study convergently evolved comparable behavior characters. To do this we have to rely on the homology criteria. Some years ago I showed' that these criteria basically allow us to identify similarities caused by the transmission of some stored information. Information may be stored either in the genome or in memories, and in fact homologies do exist and will be correctly identified, whether the information necessary to produce the homologous characters has been genetically or traditionally transmitted. The concept of homology can thus be successfully applied to all behavior characters, from insect courtship to human language, regardless of whether they are genetically fixed or are acquired through tradition. To say that similarities which are not based on homology have evolved convergently needs one more precaution: we must carefully limit the level of comparison. For instance, although the wings of birds and bats are homologous organs insofar as they are vertebrate forelimbs, they have nevertheless independently and convergently evolved into wings. We have tested the comparative method step by step, first with typical morphological characters, then with simple behavior characters such as fin movements in fish or drinking in birds.'. More recently we have applied the same method to such social behavior categories as monogamy, pair bonding, and aggression. I should like to present some of the results, which I think are of general importance. Whoever becomes interested in the field of socioecology, the social adaptations to environmental factors, will encounter many suggestions of how social phenomena such as monogamy or polygamy may increase the survival of a population under certain conditions. Monogamy seems to be fairly widespread among animals, especially in birds, but also in mammals, fish, and even invertebrates. We know already that neither monogamy, polygamy, nor agamy necessarily represents a final or more advanced evolutionary stage; instead we
