Laskaris' Color Atlas of Oral Diseases, a highly successful diagnostic atlas now in its third edition, aids physicians in solving diagnostic problems and preparing their own outline of treatment. The entire spectrum of both local diseases and oral manifestations of systemic diseases is presented. Each disease is illustrated by outstanding representative clinical color photographs juxtaposed with a concise text delineating the clinical signs and symptoms.
For the third edition, the text has been thoroughly revised to keep pace with new concepts in oral medicine. The structure of the text has been clarified and made more practically useful, with references to etiology, clinical images, differential diagnosis, laboratory diagnostic tests, and therapy guidelines.

Humans can detect and distinguish the five basic taste qualities-salty, sour, sweet, bitter, and umami. Out of these, the bitter taste is the most unpleasant. According to Robert J. Lee and Noam A Cohen, bitterness is perceived on the tongue and throughout the body, where they defend against microbial invaders. [1] Varicella zoster virus (VZV) is an exclusively human neurotropic alpha-herpesvirus. Varicella is characterized by fever concurrent with a self-limiting rash on the skin and sometimes mucosa. Headache, malaise, and loss of appetite are also attributed to VZV. [2] Oral manifestations like dysgeusia have been less widely investigated. Here, we present a case in which an atypical initial presentation of bitter taste dysgeusia later developed into chickenpox.

Management of TMDs with occlusal splint is a reversible, non- invasive modality which causes minimum damage to tissues, when compared to other irreversible treatment modalities. Objectives of this study is to assess the effectiveness of flat occlusal splint in patients with anterior disc displacement without reduction by evaluating reduction in pain and improvement in mouth opening. 35 participants with mean age 35 years who does not have any systemic diseases and not undergoing treatment for ADD without reduction were selected for study. After recording pain score on VAS scale and maximum mouth opening, flat occlusal splint was fabricated for maxillary arch. Patients were advised to wear the splint for all the time except on meal times. Maximum mouth opening and pain score were again evaluated after 3 weeks. Statistical results showed that there is highly significant reduction in pain score and increase in maximum mouth opening. Mean VAS score before treatment was 7.26±0.88. After ...

Digital imaging has changed the scenario of medical and dental imaging as it has been able to address many limitations associated with traditional film based radiograph. However, subtle changes on the image are still difficult to appreciate by the human eye because the changes are buried in a background of normal anatomic structures, and are not clearly evident. Digital subtraction radiography is one of the image enhancing technique which addresses this problem and has found its use in various fields of dentistry in the recent past. However, there is lack of review in the literature regarding this widely used technique. The purpose of this article is to present an overview of this technique and its uses in various fields of dentistry.

Background: Lip prints are seen to remain the same for an individual throughout his/her life. Cheiloscopy can be used as an effective tool in the identification of the persons from pieces of evidence that may be left behind from lip prints. Aim and Objectives: The aim of the current research was to evaluate the predominant lip groove pattern among Calicut population, Kerala. Materials and Methods: The study involved 2112 individuals (1056 males and 1056 females) in the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology, KMCT Dental College, Calicut, Kerala. Lipstick was used to record the lip groove patterns and the patterns were visualized by magnifying lens after the institutional ethical clearance and informed consent from the individual. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS software 22.0. Results: Among the study population, Type 1', Type 1, Type 4, and Type 5 were found to be common lip groove patterns. Males showed predominance on Type 1' and Type 1 lip groove patterns, whereas females showed predominance on Type 4 and Type 5 lip groove patterns. The results were similar when analyzed on upper and lower lips separately on males and females. Conclusion: Cheiloscopy is a reliable tool in personal identification and gender determination of an individual. The geographical prevalence of lip groove patterns was reported in the current research and is added to the database of the anthropological data. Studies in different geographical regions will add lip groove patterns on the database in the future and henceforth the potential of cheiloscopy could be further utilized.

Extreme oral myiasis is a rare condition, mostly affecting bedridden patients whose oral health care measures are neglected. Single stage manual removal of the maggots along with the necrotic tissue, debridement, and suturing under general anesthesia is the most effective way to treat the condition. Preventive measures are also equally important to eliminate the cause and recurrence.

Our understanding and interest in the diagnosis and management of patients with various types of temporomandibular disorders had increased as research has identified structural abnormalities and disease mechanisms associated with some of these disorders there has also been remarkable progress in the imaging of the TMJ. However, with this increasing sophistication there seems to be growing confusion among specialists and general dental practitioners, as to when imaging should be used, i f at all, and when each modality can be expected to be most useful. This paper gives an overview to one such imaging modality, arthrography; and its implications in TMJ imaging

The dilated odontoma is an infrequent developmental alteration that appears in any area of the dental arches and can affect deciduous, permanent and supernumerary tooth. Dens invaginatus is a developmental anomaly resulting from invagination of a portion of crown forming within the enamel organ during odontogenesis. The most extreme form of dens invaginatus is known as dilated odontoma. The aim of this case report is to present a rare case of bilateral dilated odontoma affecting a microdontic permanent lateral incisor in a 30 year old female patient with hypodontia and peglateral teeth with its clinical, radiological and histological features, which has yet been not reported. Bilateral presence of dilated odontoma is not a common occurrence, although a single tooth involvement in each case has been reported in the literature.

Odontome is a developmental anomaly where dental tissues are disorganized and laid down in an abnormal pattern. Though several theories have been put forward, the etiology is still unknown. Occasionally an odontome may be associated with an impacted tooth interfering with the latter’s eruption into the oral cavity. This is a case report in which a complex odontome lying superior to an impacted third molar not only prevents it from erupting but also pushes it inferiorly towards the lower border of the mandible resulting in a visible bulge affecting patient’s esthetics. To make things worse, the close proximity of the inferior alveolar nerve along with a dilaceration of the impacted third molar made treatment planning a difficult task.

Impacted anterior teeth are an impediment to treatment planning in Dentistry. Therefore, proper localisation of the impacted tooth is imperative. CBCT is the gold standard of imaging such teeth; however, poor availability of such devices in rural areas and the economic costs involved often deter patients. Additionally, the high radiation from such devices cannot be ignored. As technology advances and we move towards a 'smart world', we need to retrospect on whether we are foregoing our cognitive skills at the expense of patient radiation. Previous studies have proven that plain film radiographs are highly sensitive and specific at anterior impacted teeth localisation. Here we review different localisation techniques that can enable us to identify correct tooth position using plain films.

GDPs can systematically screen their patients for life style diseases. This can be achieved by an assistant who is trained to check blood pressure and diabetes. A recently published article pointed out that, policy makers in the US have put forth some important suggestions which could be relevant for a state like Kerala too. Fresh graduates in dentistry, if provided with short term intense training in the fields like disaster management, palliative care and geriatric care, would add up to the pool of health care professionals and also turn the dentists into major contributors in this sector. Whatever researches and advances we talk about in the tertiary institutions, we need GDPs to practice and popularise it. In other words we should call GDPs as practitioners of research.

Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC) is a complex clinical syndrome characterized by hypercoagulable state, bleeding diathesis and multiple organ failure. The most common precipitating factor is sepsis. Gram negative sepsis is the most notable infectious cause. The pivotal mediator of activation of coagulation appears to be interleukin-6. This report describes a 60 year old farmer with swelling on the floor of mouth and blisters, non-healing ulcer on the leg which was diagnosed as oral manifestations of disseminated intravascular coagulation secondary to gram negative septicemia. This case represents acute exacerbation of chronic disseminated intravascular coagulation. The main foci of infection for this acute episode arises from the periodontal infection of lower left second molar teeth. The cornerstone of the management of this condition is the treatment of the triggering cause.

The value of a civilization is predicated on how it treats kids, elderly and the disadvantaged. With the progress of modern medicine, life expectancy has improved considerably in many places around the globe. This paradigm shift has brought in alterations in morbidity. We could postpone death, albeit not without diseases. " Even death, faced with the option of death or life, would choose life. " (José Saramago, Death with Interruptions). Presumably, people living with diseases increased considerably. This change in scenario is redefining the role of health workers the world over. Dentists can contribute enormously to improve the quality of life among the elderly. Professionals who deal with elderly are aware that periodontitis associated with diabetes, dental caries, missing teeth are generally major issues of the geriatric patients. Various reasons prevent dental treatment from reaching this segment of population. Simple hurdles like difficulty in walking up the stairs, getting conveyance and unavailability of a bystander are some factors that deny them treatment. Many of them need physical help even to reach a clinic; some find it tough to explain their medical conditions to the dentist and are erratic in maintaining their medical records. A large section are not in a position to afford the cost of the treatment or they should get permission from their spouse or sons or daughters. The dentist herself may not get convinced about the need of the treatment of an elderly patient in certain cases. Kerala state is no exception. We are greying rapidly than ever with a life expectancy of 72 years. This is at par with, if at times more than, the situations in many welfare states. Obviously, we have many patients with carious teeth, painful abscesses, and elderly with chewing difficulties. This number is swelling exponentially. Do we have expert hands to handle geriatric cases? Prevailing infrastructure is abysmally inadequate to contain the crisis. Policy makers should turn their attention in this direction and make the healthcare system strong enough to tackle such issues.

The dilated odontoma is an infrequent developmental alteration that appears in any area of the
dental arches and can affect deciduous, permanent and supernumerary tooth. Dens invaginatus
is a developmental anomaly resulting from invagination of a portion of crown forming within the
enamel organ during odontogenesis. The most extreme form of dens invaginatus is known as
