Smart homes offer various new services and innumerable capabilities in automation. The adaptive and assertive capabilities of smart homes are life changing. The research highlights the concept “internet of things (IoT) along with Artificial intelligence (AI) and how they are helping smart home technology. In this research we have discussed and evaluated different types of smart homes, their terminology, architecture and infrastructure including network topologies and different technologies that are used in the implementation of smart home. The research proves as baseline knowledge for smart technology highlighting various functions of smart home that go beyond simple power control and management services, instead a new chapter of assisted, monitored and smarter life that covers and benefits every aspect of human life e.g. health monitoring, suggestions, infant monitors, elder people assistance, occupancy desired environment and automatic cleaning are a few examples. The research also concludes major challenges posing serious concerns for the smart homes and how they affect the growth of smart home market specially security and privacy issues.
