Learning-by-doing has long been a tradition in the technology disciplines. It is the hands-on work, combined with student reflection, feedback and assessment, that reinforces theory into practice. Over the past 40 years, experiential learning (EL) in higher education has grown beyond in-class assignments to include internships, cooperative education, team-based learning, project-based learning, community engagement, service learning, international and study-away experiences, capstone projects and research opportunities. This paper provides an overview of experiential education theory and practice in the undergraduate technology disciplines, and presents examples of how experiential learning practices have evolved over time at a medium-sized institution in the Northeast USA. In addition, this paper offers instructors theoretical strategies to improve the hands-on work that is likely already present in their courses

Abstract: In the past few years, universities have become much more involved in outcomes assessment. Outside of the classroom analysis of learning outcomes, an investigation is performed into the use of current data mining tools to assess the issue of student retention within the Computer Information Systems (CIS) department. Utilizing both a historical dataset of CIS students over a 10 year period, and a current student dataset, this analysis specifically deals with the following questions: 1. How can we use the past to predict retention risk of the future students? 2. Do students who transfer CIS courses (core or elective) have an increased retention risk? The data mining tool was the Oracle Data MiningTM Package used to perform tasks as classification (Naïve Bayesian and support vector machine), and attribute importance. This paper was selected for inclusion in the journal based on blind reviews from three or more peers placing it in the 30% acceptance rate category for papers su...

Abstract: Outsourcing is a threat to many jobs in the IT sector, and puts pressure on IT curricula to adjust. The threat of outsourcing should not be underestimated. What are the characteristics of jobs that are easily outsourced? And what can be done to produce well rounded IT professionals in-sulated from outsourcing? Where outsourcing is not the answer, IT curricula should take advantage. Teaching students to be innovative, creative, culturally aware, work in teams, and communicate well can prepare them to compete in the global economy. This can be accomplished by reinforcing general

This paper invites Computer Information System (CIS) program stakeholders to consider several strategic issues. They include: Curriculum & Pedagogy, Business Model & Value Proposition, Increasingly Diverse Student Body, and Student Success & Completion. These strategic issues are those in which faculty have the ability to provide the most influence and make the most impact; areas in which the faculty can make significant contributions without requiring higher-level organizational commitment. In addition, attention to these four areas can help to address the shortage of individual entry-level employees in the field. The paper does not offer prescriptive solutions; rather, it broadly frames some strategic issues and suggests areas for stakeholder consideration. Ideally, each program should weigh strategic issues against the backdrop of the environmental factors, i.e., opportunities and threats, within which it operates, and in the context of its own strengths and weaknesses. Moreover,...

Abstract: Despite advances in spam detection software, anti-spam laws, and increasingly sophis-ticated users, the number of successful phishing scams continues to grow. In addition to monetary losses attributable to phishing, there is also a loss of confidence that stifles use of online services. Using in-class activities in an introductory computer course is one way of familiarizing students with phishing and teaching them how to recognize a phishing email in order to avoid becoming victims.

Abstract: Contemporary Information Systems graduates will be more marketable in the workplace upon graduation if they have combined competencies in both technical and soft skills: interpersonal communication, teamwork, time management, planning and organizational skills. Team and projectbased learning can be used to incorporate soft skill competencies with technical skills. The authors have created instructional modules that take these factors into account. Using these strategies while at the same time applying soft skills into practice, students gain a deeper understanding and

Only This study represents an analysis of student performance in computer information systems (CIS) courses using the Felder-Silverman Index of Learning Styles (ILS) to examine academic success in CIS courses. For this study, academic success is measured by grades achieved. The ILS measurement scale was self-administered by students enrolled in CIS courses from fall 2008 through spring 2013. Our study found a significant difference between students' grades and learning styles. We also found a significant relationship between students' grades and the Active vs-Reflective index score.

This study represents an analysis of student performance in computer information systems (CIS) courses and the potential influence of Jungian personality traits on academic success in CIS courses. For this study, academic success is measured by grades achieved. The MBTI measurement scale was self-analyzed by students in CIS courses from fall 2008 through spring 2013. The data showed a statistically significant correlation between various personality dichotomies of the type (Extraversion-Introversion, Sensing-Intuition, Thinking-Feeling, and JudgingPerceiving) and higher grades scores. The results of this study indicate that course performance of groups of students are different relative to their personality type. In this study, Thinking type students performed better than Feeling types, and Judgers performed better than Perceivers.

This research is a longitudinal study of Jungian personality traits and academic success of students enrolled in Computer Information Systems (CIS) courses. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) measurement scale was self-analyzed by students in CIS courses from fall 2001 through spring 2013. The results of this study indicate that both Extroverts and Judgers have increased as percentage of enrollment between 2001-2003 and 2012-2013. There was no change in academic success, as measured by grades achieved, by personality type from 2001-2003 and 2012-2013.

Instant messaging (IM) as a form of communication offers unique advantages to traditional email communications, centered mostly on its immediacy. However, levels of IM use are significantly less than email especially in business organizations. In an attempt to understand IM behavior and encourage its adoption, this manuscript explores the instant messaging behavior using the Rogers (1995) model of human behavior known as Diffusion of Innovation (DI). Specifically, findings reveal that both behavioral compatibility with instant messaging, relative advantage (RA) provided by IM, and ease of trying (TRY) IM are positively associated with intention to use IM. In addition, critical mass (CM) is positively associated with intention and findings confirm that intention influences use of instant messaging. A review of gender shows little difference between diffusion influences on intention. The only significant change is relative advantage which is significant at p < .05 for males but onl...

Business school graduates are expected to enter industry with the ability to communicate effectively. This study identifies business school learning outcomes surrounding presentation skills and reviews the literature on the integration of presentation skills into the business school curriculum. Business students, faculty and practitioners were surveyed on a variety of issues regarding presentations. The study finds that students are given some instruction in business-style presentation, but prepare the majority of their presentations in a different manner than do practitioners. Faculty and business practitioners disagree on whether recent graduates have adequate oral communication skills.

This manuscript provides a comprehensive review of many of the behavioral factors associated with the use of technology and tests their applicability to text messaging. The theories explored included End User Computer Satisfaction, Theory of Reasoned Action, Diffusion of Innovation, Theory of Planned Behavior, and Technology Acceptance Model. In addition, Positive and Negative Emotion factors were developed and tested to examine their influence on text messaging behavioral intention. Several statistical processes were utilized to develop and confirm the factors. The results of the study suggest that no one model can fully explain texting behavior but several factors did have a significant influence on intention at p < .05. These factors were Attitude, Compatibility, Ease of Use, Satisfaction, and Visibility. These factors can serve as areas that practitioners and researchers can focus on to improve text messaging intention and obtain the significant benefits of this technology.

With businesses struggling for resources during economic downturns, traditional business student internships were becoming more difficult to develop. One business school extended its experiential learning opportunities with specific management projects in community small business, healthcare, education, and non-profit organizations. The on-campus service learning center provided project development, logistical support, and assessment for forty-five business students to participate in thirty-eight on-site, Human Resource Management projects. Means and standard deviations for selfreport, end-of-semester surveys were determined for six Likert-scale items that measured the students’ satisfaction with the project experience, and percentages were calculated of students who indicated specific personal and intellectual benefits derived from the projects. Most students reported favorable experiences with these non-traditional learning sites. Student projects developed management career choic...

Online social networking (SN) has gained enormous popularity in the last ten years with users numbering in the millions. There are an equal number of males and females who use social networking and there is no difference in ethnicity; Caucasians, African-American and Hispanic adults are equally likely to use these sites. This paper studies social networking behavior using Rogers (1995) model of human behavior known as Diffusion of Innovation (DI). Specifically, findings reveal that behavioral compatibility (COMP) with social networking, relative advantage (RA), complexity (CMPX) and ease of trying (TRY) are positively associated with intention to use social networking. In addition, findings confirm that intention influences use of social networking. A review of gender shows little difference between diffusion influences on intention. The modified DI model provides a good fit with the overall data and can be used to predict and understand the usage of social networking.

Colleges and universities are finding new ways to enhance the academic environment with high-impact programs such as student-based research, internships and international study abroad programs. Research has shown that students learn most when they are more engaged in the experience rather than passive participants. This exploratory study examines high-impact opportunities for undergraduate university students in the U.S. Web sites and other materials from 90 randomly selected AACSB and ACBSP member schools were reviewed to determine how each incorporates high-impact educational practices into their overall university programs and in their business school programs. Three high-impact programs were examined: undergraduate research, internships and global learning opportunities. Recommendations for future high-impact educational practices are discussed. High Impact (HI) programs are prevalent in U.S. colleges and universities. There is a significant positive relationship between high-im...

One of the most important means of communication for young people today is social networking. This study explores social networking behavior using the Ajzen and Fishbein (1980) model of human behavior known as Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA). Specifically, findings reveal that both attitude toward social networking and “subjective norm” are positively associated with intention to use social networking (SN). In addition, intention influences use of social networking. The TRA model provides a strong fit with the overall data and can be used to predict and understand the usage of social networking in the target population.

Major faculty development efforts in higher education gained momentum in the 1960’s (Millis, 1994); however, much of what has been written to-date on the subject was published in the eighties and nineties. There is no question that scholars agree that faculty development funding is a necessity. However, until now, articles have concentrated on faculty research and development as it applies across the academy, with little to no emphasis on individual disciplines. This paper visits the faculty research and development grant process and how it applies to faculty in the technology disciplines. The authors will discuss the uniqueness of the technology disciplines and how their distinctiveness affects the professional development process. A survey was sent to academic technologists to learn about faculty development standards at their college or university. Survey data indicates that there is a perception of a double standard when it comes to the development requirements for the academic ...

Institutions of higher learning have understood for many years that in order stay competitive, they must have technology-based initiatives in place. Since the mid-1990’s, there has been a trend toward student laptop lease/buy programs. Beginning in the early 2000’s and until recently, many colleges and universities have begun to experiment with tablet PC computing requirements. More often than not, incoming freshmen have few choices. Typically the university tells the students and their parents which computing platform and manufacturer they have chosen for them and the students are required to purchase or lease that computer at the university’s designated price. Students rarely understand how or why the university has chosen a particular platform and often resent having to pay, what they perceive as, premium prices for their total computing package. This paper introduces a team-based project that was assigned to a 200-level undergraduate Management Information Systems (MIS) class. T...

This paper discusses the importance of incorporating Web 2.0 technologies across the Information Systems (IS) curriculum. The Web 2.0 paradigm is not new; although the term itself was coined in 2004 by Dale Dougherty of O’Reilly Media, Inc., (Anderson, 2007) the concept of a collaborative workspace was the original vision of Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web. The Economist Intelligence Unit (2007) reports that approximately 80% of all corporations believe that Web 2.0 has the potential to increase revenues. Others have stated that health of one’s business could be seriously damaged if these technologies are not being utilized. This manuscript first presents a review of the importance of Web 2.0 technologies. This is followed by a comprehensive overview of the multitude of technologies that make up Web 2.0. The goal is to provide a detailed reference to understanding these tools so that they can be readily understood by students and easily incorporated into current ...

Web 2.0 tools are collaborative Internet applications that allow for facilitation of communications between individuals and organizations. Examples of Web 2.0 tools include blogs, wikis, Second Life, and social networking. This manuscript reviews classroom implementation of Web 2.0 tools at three Northeastern US universities. The importance of Web 2.0 instruction is examined via literature review and pre and post class testing of the students involved in the courses. It was found that knowledge of Web 2.0 skills is generally regarded as being very important. Students who took the course and were educated on Web 2.0 skills increased both their knowledge and comfort level after the course. A detailed analysis of student perceptions both prior to taking the course and after instruction are reviewed.

This study addresses the factors that contribute to dishonest behavior of business majors. It also looks at how today’s students and business professors define academic dishonesty. Special emphasis is given to whether enrollment in religion and ethics classes and attendance at religious activities influence a student’s definitions of and participation in dishonest behavior. In the spring of 2006, the authors surveyed students enrolled in business courses at three institutions: a Catholic-affiliated college in the northeast, a Baptist-affiliated university in the south, and a non-religious affiliated university in the south. All three are private institutions with a student population of 2,500 or less. The same survey was repeated in the spring of 2007. Business faculty at all three institutions were given a similar, shorter survey to determine their perceptions of what defined cheating. In addition to the survey data, the authors looked at each institution’s academic integrity state...

This purpose of this research was to study the effect of gender on text messaging (SMS). A comprehensive survey was developed to explore various aspects of text messaging usage. The survey included factors from the Theory of Reasoned Action, Technology Acceptance Model, Theory of Planned Behavior, End User Computer Satisfaction, Expectation/Confirmation Theory, and Diffusion of Innovation. Overall, there was very little statistical difference based on gender with the exception of emotions. All of the positive emotions were higher for females than males. In other words, females were more pleased, satisfied, contented, and delighted with their text messaging experience.

Contemporary Information Systems graduates will be more marketable in the workplace upon graduation if they have combined competencies in both technical and soft skills: interpersonal communication, teamwork, time management, planning and organizational skills. Team and project-based learning can be used to incorporate soft skill competencies with technical skills. The authors have created instructional modules that take these factors into account. Using these strategies while at the same time applying soft skills into practice, students gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the importance of such skills.

Text messaging or Short Message Service (SMS) as a form of communication offers unique advantages to traditional phone call communications. The typical U.S. mobile subscriber sends and receives more SMS text messages than telephone calls. In an attempt to understand text messaging behavioral intention and encourage its adoption, this manuscript explores the text messaging behavior using the variables from the models of human behavior known as Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA), the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), and the Diffusion of Innovation (DI). Variables from each did contribute to text messaging usage. In addition, an analysis of text messaging by age and student status was performed. Overall, there was no difference found in intent to use text messaging by age or gender. Also, no significant difference was found in frequency of text messaging and time spent texting by gender. Age, did show significant differences supporting statistics that show younger individuals text more....

The first year of college often proves to be the most difficult for many undergraduate students. Dropout rates can skyrocket when students feel disconnected or overwhelmed (Li, Chen, & Duanmu, 2009). In recent years, many colleges and universities have begun to introduce First Year Experience (FYE) programs to help first year undergraduate students to better adjust to the college environment and prepare them to be more successful in their college life. The FYE course typically extends basic orientation content and student development across the first year. Topics range from academic skills, to wellness and stress management, and, research conducted by the Policy Center on the First Year of College found that first year seminars are offered by 90% of all four-year institutions in the U.S. (Barefoot, 2003). An environmental scan performed by the University in one study revealed that 17 of 18 competitor institutions and 100% of aspirant institutions offered an FYE (Upcraft, Gardner, & ...

The importance of writing skills to the business student learning experience, the job-seeking graduate and the discerning employer is well documented and systemically ignored. The literature continually provides metrics on business school graduates and their deficient writing skills. The authors categorize and differentiate the strengths and deficiencies in writing skill acquisition across the college business curriculum. The literature review summarizes employer priorities and business school learning outcomes, writing intensive courses across all disciplines, and the winning advantage of a curriculum utilizing writing fellows and writing centers. Further, field data was collected at two east coast colleges highlighting implementation and integration details. The assessment shows positive attitudes by both faculty favoring an in-class focus as well as students favoring out-of-class writing support.

MBA programs search for ways to identify candidates who will be successful in their programs. Several studies have been done that have analyzed the relationship between graduate grade point average and factors that contribute to academic performance, such as Graduate Management Aptitude Test (GMAT) scores, undergraduate GPA, gender and business experience. This paper addresses the relationship between graduate GPA and the traditional variables; however, it will use actual years of business experience instead of a proxy, the method used in other papers. This paper will also look at how enrollment in a one semester prerequisite course for students without undergraduate business degree impacts graduate GPA. A second goal of the study is to analyze students who withdrew from the MBA program before completion. The authors will compare data of these students to students who successfully completed the program to look for potential risk indicators. The analysis shows a significant positive ...
