In 1871, sherry industry was at the zenith of the historical period that had become it in the main agribusiness emporium of the country during the nineteenth century. In Marco del Jerez, El Puerto de Santa María, producer and port of embarkation, was raised on this date the installation of a tramway which would transfer passengers from the railway station, originated in the primitive line Jerez-El Puerto, first of Andalusia with industrial character, to the sea baths of Puntilla beach. The tramway would improve access to the tourist offer of the city and facilitate the arrival of passengers crossing the urban area and passing through the main industrial sector of the population: Campo de Guía, considered the first industrial expansion of contemporary Spain; as well as other winerys in the city.
This proposed tramway, although it is not implemented, is an extraordinary example of how industry and its elements can intervene, from different scales and perspectives, on the landscape of the city.

The sherry origin denomination area (El Puerto de Santa María, Sanlúcar
de Barrameda and Jerez de la Frontera as capital) would become an extraordinary
economic emporium thanks to the wine business in the middle
of the nineteen century. At the end of the century the cities of the sherry
wine had been transformed based on the wineries constructions. This specific
industrial typology would redefine the urban center and it would build
the first historic outskirts.
Throughout these decades the image of wine architecture evolve independently
of constructive or functional factors, even typological, which
would be maintained with great stability. The interaction between the urban
center and the industrial building will be the determining factor in the
aesthetic evolution of the wineries. In those decades we also find some
symbolic matter with the will to generate company image throughout the
construction of the wineries. Stylistic issues will have little impact on the
architecture of the wineries, which is why they are incorporated in a fragmented
way. This incorporation is difficult to place in the eclectic global
context of the winery society.
This evolution, which has the functional and unornamented architecture of
the first large wineries as its starting point, will focus its efforts on the progressive
increase of the attention given to the aesthetics of the winery,
mainly in the urban facades of these constructions. This facade will be the
generator element of the scenography of the winery-city. Urban and corporate
image will be merged in the winery facade, becoming this elements
of business representation in prints, labels and advertising maps. The
commercial projection of some companies will be associated to the diffusion
of the urban image of the industry.

“Campo de Guía”, located in El Puerto de Santa María, is a unique example
of urban industrial expansión. Developed throughout the nineteenth
century, it is considered the first planned industrial expansion of
contemporary Spain
The winery’s expansion was born as a urban edge in the city of the XIX,
whereas, at present, it forms part of the center of the town and is inserted
in the area delimited like Historical Center. This important change in the
interaction of the expansion with its surroundings will produce problems
at the urban level, which, to this day, are still present.
The main objective of this communication is to show the conditions of
opportunity and the real estate value that this area of the city possesses
based on its patrimonial and strategic value. To do this, we will make a
diagnosis of the situation of the expansion, based on studies that we have
developed during the doctoral thesis that we are going on, and we will
study the proposals of the administration for the recovery of the expansion.
From these basic objectives, this text is structured based on the following
sections: 1) “Campo de Guía”: historical-urban context, 2) Diagnostic study
and detection of urban problems, 3) Management strategies, 4)
Opportunities of the “Campo de Guía”, 5) Conclusions, future lines and
perspectives.
This structure will allow us to understand the normative and urban context
of the historic industrial heritage that, as in the object of this
communication, is the basis of the regional identity.

In this paper we present our research´s progresses of the Wine Landscape of Puerto de Santa María, in Cadiz. We defend the idea that understanding landscape is an exercise that unites the different layers of urban reality: history, society, urban development, industry, etc.
The landscape that we will analyze in this paper corresponds to the city
developed from nineteenth century to the present. Through various events and historical plans we will show how wine industry has conditioned the design and evolution of the city and its urban landscape.
This landscape evolves with the industry boom. We will analyze the evolutionof this landscape, in particular the industrial expansion of “Campo de Guía”, originally located in the city limits and which now forms part of the Historic Center in Puerto de Santa María.
The importance of this research lies in morphological uniqueness of the
extension of “Campo de Guía” and its evolution to the present day. In this
sense the article will be developed following the next sections: state of the art, analysis tools and analysis of the evolution of wine cellar landscape to the present.
To perform this analysis about the image of wine landscape in El Puerto de Santa María, we have used the concepts presented by Kevin Lynch "The image of the city".
Ultimately, this research goal is to vindicate the existing values in the urban landscape of wine and analyze the problems generated to be able to establish understanding models of these realities.

The sherry wine landscape is the focus of the urban reality of the populations included in its territorial denomination area: Marco del Jerez. Taking as a case study El Puerto de Santa Maria, we intend to analyze and define its characteristics, highlight its repercussions on the historical landscape of the city, and know the patrimonial protection strategies proposed by the administration. El Puerto de Santa Maria presents a singular urban historical landscape which is characterized by the presence of the architecture and urbanism of the wine industry. This urban production landscape develops from the end of the 18th century until the middle of the 20th century, coexisting with the historic city, from its beginnings as an urban edge up to the present as part of the historical center. At present, the architectures of the wine represent, approximately, 23% of the area declared as historical sector. This landscape in which we are working through our doctoral thesis (The urban landscape of wine of El Puerto de Santa Maria) presents different problems: the relationship of the architecture of production with the historic city and the current city, the ownership of the wineries, the lack of recognition of the urban landscape of wine by the administration, the crisis of the sector that led to the abandonment and conversion of the wineries, the deterioration of the buildings, the lack of strategies and urban planning... Through this communication we intend to show the strategies and regulations raised by the administration at its different scales (local, regional and national) to protect the urban historical landscape of wine. To do this, we will structure our communication in the following sections: 1) Introduction, 2) The urban landscape of wine in “El Puerto de Santa María”, 3) Regulations on the historical landscapes of the production of wine, 4) Conclusions and future lines.

Production buildings constitute a specific section of vernacular architecture, with distinct characteristics. In Andalusia, within this group, the architecture of wine, acquires an important relevancne, the wine cellars. They are a large number of buildings, which were built in the 18th, and 19th centuries. This happened when traditional Andalusian wine production was transformed into a modern wine industry. An industrial development generated a vast architectural ensemble of unique characteristics. This has been studied especially in the Sherry wine region, but it is also present in other regions such as Montilla-Moriles or El Condado de Huelva. The architectural, and industrial wine development in the 19th century was fundamentally based on the repetition of a specific model: the basilica cellar. A simplified formal, and constructive system that comes from the standardisation of the vernacular cellar, and that establishes early points of convergence with the industrial building. A...
