Transmit laser selection (TLS) diversity scheme has been proposed recently for free-space optical communication systems and its bit error rate (BER) performance has been investigated over K-distributed turbulence channels based on lengthy simulations. Moreover, for a limiting case of strong turbulence conditions that have been modelled by negative exponential distribution, a closed-form expression for the average BER has been presented in the open technical literature. In this study, first a novel approximate analytical expression is derived for the probability density function (PDF) of the resulting channel irradiance corresponding to a TLS diversity scheme over the K channel. The approximated PDF accurately estimates the statistics of the channel irradiance over a wide range of channel conditions. Then, based on the derived PDF, an analytical closed-form expression is presented for the average BER, which can be used to estimates the BER of the system very accurately over K-distributed turbulence channels without resorting to lengthy simulations. Additionally, based on the derived analytical results, the effect of using laser pulse shape with increased peak-to-average optical power ratio on the system performance is investigated. Numerical results are further demonstrated to confirm the analytical results.

The cursive and ligature nature of the Arabic script make the segmentation of words into individual characters a difficult task. Despite attempts to apply methods for cursive Latin and other scripts to Arabic script, it is generally insufficient to segment the Arabic text. This paper proposes a new segmentation algorithm for the handwritten Arabic text and the main idea consists

Abstract The paper presents the concept, design and analysis for a visible light communications receiver which has a full 180 perception angle thus offering the guard against blocking and enhancing the system mobility. The proposed receiver includes seven sub-receivers with the proposed geometrical shape investigated and analyzed in MATLAB® for evaluating the received power, RMS delay spread and corresponding signal to noise ratio. The results show that the receiver is fully mobile within the test area and can handle ...

This paper reports the experimental wavelet denoising techniques carried out for the first time for a number of modulation schemes for indoor optical wireless communications in the presence of fluorescent light interference. The experimental results are verified using computer simulations, clearly illustrating the advantage of the wavelet denoising technique in comparison to the high pass filtering for all baseband modulation schemes.

This letter presents new experimental results on a 1-Mb/s organic visible light communications system. These results are the first demonstration of a fully organic free space optical communications system. Due to low charge transport characteristics, organic devices are typically highly band limited in the hundreds of kilohertz region (up to 135 kHz in this letter). Therefore, an artificial neural network (ANN) equalizer is required to undo the effects of intersymbol interference. Without the ANN, the maximum link performance corresponds to a data rate of 350 kb/s; however, with the ANN, a transmission speed of 1.15 Mb/s could be supported.

There is a growing demand for high mobility and ultrafast internet/data services which drives the motivation for free space optical (FSO) communications for high speed trains. Here we present an FSO link for the ground-to-train communications, which consists of optical transceivers positioned alongside the track and on the roof of the train. When the train moves at a high speed, the airwave induced turbulence degrades the FSO link performance. In this paper the effect of turbulence is experimentally investigated and ...

Abstract: In this paper we evaluate the performance of digital pulse interval modulation (DPIM) with convolutional coding for different values of bit resolution and different sizes of guard bands. We show that convolutional coding is an effective method of improving the error performance of DPIM over optical wireless links. The convolutional coded DPIM with a guard band of 2 slots has the advantage of fixed header pattern so that decoding is simple with no need for Viterbi decoding. It also achieves a code gain of more than 4 dB ...

Visible Light Communication (VLC) uses light-emitting diodes to provide wireless connectivity in public environments. Transmission security in this emerging channel is not trivial. Chaotic modulation techniques can provide encryption directly in the physical layer based on the random-alike evolution and strong synchronization prospect given by deterministic chaos. In secure chaotic inclusion or embedding methods, continuous-time chaos oscillator models need to be synchronized via a coupling carrier. Here we present a first numerical simulation study for the impact of the variable delays induced by line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight multipath fading in complete chaotic synchronization. More precisely, we analyze a chaotic Colpitts oscillator that is simultaneously transmitting the carrier to several mobile receivers via nine spotlights. Such induced delays depend on both the receiver position and the carrier frequency, influencing the complete synchronization required in modulation ...

Abstract In this paper, the effect of the equal gain combining (EGC) spatial diversity for the free space optical (FSO) link for the new hybrid pulse position modulation binary phase shift keying subcarrier intensity modulation (2-PPM-BPSK-SIM) scheme in a turbulence channel is investigated. The analytical unconditional bit error rate (BER) of 2-PPM-BPSK-SIM with the EGC diversity under lognormal and negative exponential channels is investigated and a computer simulation is carried out to quantify the diversity gain. We present a newly designed polymer light-emitting diode with a bandwidth of ~350  kHz for high-speed visible light communications. Using this new polymer light-emitting diode as a transmitter, we have achieved a record transmission speed of 10  Mb/s for a polymer light-emitting diode-based optical communication system with an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing technique, matching the performance of single carrier formats using multitap equalization. For achieving such a high data-rate, a power pre-emphasis technique was adopted.
