Ngugi wa Thiong'o
Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o (5.1. 1938.-) je kenijski pisac, koji je svojevremeno pisao na engleskom a danas piše na Gĩkũyũ jeziku. Opus mu se sastoji od romana, drama, novela, eseja, akademskih studija, kritika i dječjih knjiga. On je osnivač i urednik časopisa nma Gikuyu jezikuMutiiri. Ngugi je otišao u egzil nakon što je pušten iz kenijskog zatvora 1977. godine; otada živi u SAD, a godinama je predavao na Yaleu, kao i na njujorškom univerzitetu te Univerzitetu Kalifornije u Irvineu.
Ngugi je rođen u Kamiriithuu, u blizini grada Kiambu, u porodici koja je pripadala plemenu Kikuyu. Kršten je kao James Ngugi, a nakon odlaska u misionarsku školu postao je gorljivi krščanin. Rodbina mu je, pak, bila pogođena pobunom Mau Mau; tada mu je ubijen polubrat, a majka mučena.
Za vrijeme studija u Leedsu napisao je 1964. godine svoj prvi roman Weep Not, Child koji se smatra prvim romanom istočnoafričke književnosti. Taj i sljedeći roman, The River Between, napisao je na engleskom jeziku.
Godine 1967. prigrlio je marksističke ideje Frantza Fanona, a zajedno s njima i antikolonijalizam. Zbog toga se odrekao kršćanstva, engleskog imena, a konačno i engleskog jezika kao simbola kolonijalnog ugnjetavanja. Umjesto engleskog, počeo je pisati na Gikuyu i suahili jeziku.
Godine 1977. je zatvoren zbog kritike tadašnjeg potpredsjednika Daniela Arapa Moija, a pet godina kasnije pušten. Tada je otišao u SAD.
Godine 2004. se vratio u Keniju, ali su ga u hotelskoj sobi napali razbojnici te mu silovali ženu.
