The first Greek among the small group of PhD holders in the field of typography & graphic communication (University of Reading, UK, 1997; “Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation” scholarship) and a Fellow of the “International Society of Typographic Designers” (ISTD) and the “Institute of Paper, Printing and Publishing” (IP3), Klimis is also the initiator of the idea and the driving force behind the “International Conference on Typography and Visual Communication” (ICTVC | http://www.ictvc.org/), director and editor of the academic journal Hyphen, a typographic forum (http://istvc.org/hyphien-a-typographic-forum.html), and author of the books Θέματα αναπαραγωγής και εκτύπωσης (Reproduction and printing issues; 1988, 93, 97, new ed. 2010) and Casting the Greek Newspaper: a study of the morphology of the ‘ephemeris’ from its origins until the introduction of mechanical setting (1999).
His research interests include printing history and technology, and typographic design for visual communication. As Chairman of “AlterVision SA”, General Director of “Typophilia Publishing”, and Director of the “University of Macedonia Press” (established on EU funds in 1998), Klimis has in the past forty years supervised many print, editorial and information design projects, having acted as editor and publisher as well as designer and typographic consultant to government bodies and large private firms.
He has published numerous articles about the history and practice of printing, has been member of scientific and organising committees of international conferences, jury member for national and international design competitions, and has served as the Head of the University of Nicosia Department of Design & Multimedia for six years (April 2008–2014) and Associate Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (Dec 2016–Feb 2020).edit

The present chapter constitutes an attempt to introduce aspects of the little known and largely neglected modern Greek scribal history to a wider audience discussing the physical properties and the typographic features of the handwritten ephemeris. Moreover, it suggests that visual graphic language constitutes an integral part of that history and it should be studied alongside and in combination with already established research objectives.

The singular evolution of Greek typography, as well as the involvement of a limited circle of people with its history, has deprived us of research in such matters. Any comparison with bibliographies of other countries would be wrong.... more
The singular evolution of Greek typography, as well as the involvement of a limited circle of people with its history, has deprived us of research in such matters. Any comparison with bibliographies of other countries would be wrong. Nevertheless, we cannot fail to acknowledge the intensified efforts, especially over the last fifteen years, towards the identification and study of issues related to Greek typography. It would probably be irrational to expect impressive results in such a short period of time, since many of the basic conditions that promote and facilitate research are missing. Some of conditions will only be met by establishing and developing schools, academic departments, research centres and museums. Furthermore, we should not forget that the study of typography demands constant contact and co-operation among experts from different academic fields: epigraphists, palaeographers, art historians, book scholars, craftsmen, and the like.

Coincidentally or not, most Greeks who were connected with the early press were active scribes and calligraphers. For this good reason A.F. Didot devotes a small chapter of his book to the Cretan calligraphers. The boundaries between Greek calligraphy and the then current handwriting cannot be easily defined; this is probably due to the idiosyncratic development of Greek writing. No such thing as the black letter has ever existed in Greek writing because of the overall cursiveness of the characters; this may well be one of the reasons why high levels of individualism have been introduced into Greek writing. After the appearance of small letters in the ninth century at the Studios monastery in Constantinople, a variety of hands were to follow. The main characteristic was their great individuality.

Η παιδεία, με την ευρεία έννοια, αποτελεί στα χέρια (και) του τυπογραφικού σχεδιαστή ή σχεδιάστριας αναντικατάστατο όπλο, προσδίδοντας ανεκτίμητο συγκριτικό πλεονέκτημα. Σε αυτήν τη λογική πρέπει να δομούνται τα πανεπιστημιακά προγράμματα σχεδιασμού για τη γραφική επικοινωνία, κάνοντάς τα να ξεχωρίζουν από τα αντίστοιχα των τεχνικών κολεγίων.Στα τελευταία, η εκμάθηση του λογισμικού και τα εξαντλητικά, καθόλου ή ελλιπώς ενημερωμένα σε ιστορική και θεωρητική βάση, projects, είναι στην πρώτη γραμμή. ‘Καλά χέρια’ και καλούς χρήστες λογισμικού μπορούμε να βρούμε όσους θέλουμε εκεί έξω, αλλά τί γίνεται με τους σκεπτόμενους και μορφωμένους designers, οι οποίοι θα κάνουν την πραγματική διαφορά όταν σχεδιάζουν για να επιλύσουν προβλήματα επικοινωνίας, κάτι που αποτελεί τον πυρήνα του graphic design;

We can claim that the history of printing in Cyprus remains an unexplored territory, especially when it comes to the documentation of historical and practical issues related to matters that concern the originators, their tools and materials as well as their products – and to the evaluation of these as cultural commodities. But also their relationships with colleagues within the print shops, with fellow printers and external collaborators (such as bookbinders, paper and printing type suppliers, machinery importers and technicians), and the community in general.

In chronological order and up to 1821, the year of the Greek Revolution, the following titles were published in Vienna: Ephemeris (1790), Ermis o Logios (1811), Ellenikos Telegraphos (1812), Philologikos Telegraphos (1817), and Kalliopi (1819). In addition Melissa and Athena (both in 1819) were published in Paris. In Paris also came out the short-lived Mouseion (only one issue) in 1819. Furthermore, an announcement in Logios Ermis (issue 8, 15.4.1819,
p.307) informed readers about the forthcoming publication of a periodical that was to be printed in England. As we now know, this operation failed. All these publications were printed in places other than Greece and, with one exception, by non-Greek printers.

Παραδόξως, μερικοί τόμοι των 4Τροχών αλλά και του Auto, που διασώθηκαν, βρίσκονται ακόμη απέναντί μου, ντυμένοι με μαύρη δερματίνη και μια μπορντό φάσα, που φιλοξενεί τον χρυσοτυπωμένο τίτλο τους. Στις εσωτερικές σελίδες, το Lada 1500S διαφημίζεται ως ο “σύντροφος της πολυτέλειας”, και στην καταχώρηση για το ‘σκαραβαίο’ διαβάζουμε ότι “είναι διεθνής γιατί αντέχει σ’ οποιοδήποτε δρόμο και σ’ οποιοδήποτε κλίμα και μ’ οποιοδήποτε οδηγό”.

Στον ευρύτατο χώρο εφαρμογών της γραφικής οπτικής επικοινωνίας υπάρχει ένα ενδιαφέρον υποπεδίο που οι graphic designers καλούνται όλο και πιο συχνά να υπηρετήσουν: αφορά στο σχεδιασμό της (συνήθως πολύπλοκης) πληροφορίας και την οπτικοποίηση δεδομένων και καταλήγει σε αυτό που ονομάζουμε πληροφοριακό γράφημα ή infographic. Αν ήταν ν' αναφέρω κάποια θετικά ανάμεσα σ' όλα τα δραματικά, δύσκολα κι αρνητικά της Covid-19 περιόδου, θα συμπεριλάμβανα την επαφή και γνωριμία ενός τεράστιου αριθμού ανθρώπων με τα infographics και, επομένως, την παραδοχή της σημασίας του ρόλου της γραφικής οπτικής επικοινωνίας στη σύγχρονη πραγματικότητα.

Πόρρω απέχοντας από λογικές όπως η παραπάνω, στις συζητήσεις με τους φοιτητές και τις φοιτήτριές μου για την τυπογραφία και το graphic design οφείλω να εξηγώ την κοινωνική σημασία και τον (εκ)παιδευτικό τους ρόλο – ιδιαίτερα σε συνθήκες κρίσης, όπως οι σημερινές. Αναφέρομαι στη σημασία του graphic design ως μέρους ενός εντυπωσιακά ευρέος πεδίου (design), οι διεργασίες στο πλαίσιο του οποίου στοχεύουν στην επίλυση καθημερινών προβλημάτων, αλληλεπιδρούν με τις κοινωνίες και το περιβάλλον, καθορίζουν συμπεριφορές και, εν ολίγοις, αποτελούν καθρέφτη του πολιτισμού.

Thessaloniki Graphic Design, 1980-2009, a compilation, might be a book that originated from Thessaloniki, it is however addressed to the whole world as it is about cultural heritage that belongs to everyone. Its basic virtue is honesty; it is not a patchwork of supposed to be awarded works, nor is it a DIY album for young (or old and exhausted) designers, nor a self-deceiving vehicle of this or that ‘design star’ like much of the material to be found on the shelves of hypermarkets nowadays dressed in a bookshop costume. It is about a unique attempt to visually narrate a three decade course of Thessaloniki graphic design.

Έχουμε φτάσει πια σε σημείο να αποδεχόμαστε ένα μίγμα φωνητικής και ιστορικής ορθογραφίας που απλώς παρατείνει τη σύγχυση και λειτουργεί ως τροχοπέδη ενάντια σε κάθε προσπάθεια για απόκτηση αληθινής γνώσης. Είναι καιρός να πάρουμε μια τολμηρή απόφαση που θα βοηθήσει να ξεπεραστεί ένα μεγάλο εμπόδιο στο δρόμο προς την ουσιαστική μετατροπή της εκπαιδευτικής διαδικασίας σε σημαντικό εργαλείο για την ανάπτυξη της παιδείας. Η απόφαση για την καθιέρωση της φωνητικής γραφής μπορεί να αποτελέσει εφαλτήριο για τη σταδιακή απαγκίστρωση από ξεπερασμένες από την ίδια την καθημερινότητα αντιλήψεις και ν’ ανοίξει το δρόμο για ουσιαστική, χωρίς αυτισμούς, και σε βάθος συμμετοχή των ικανών νέων μας στη διαμόρφωση της κουλτούρας εντός και εκτός συνόρων, κάτι που πόρρω απέχει ποιοτικά από τους διεθνείς διαγωνισμούς και τα στατιστικά αποτελέσματα...

Πέρασε ήδη ένα εξάμηνο και στο μεταξύ πολλά γράφτηκαν και αναμφίβολα θα γραφούν ακόμα για την πολιτιστική κληρονομιά, τη συμβολή του Μάνου, το έργο του ΕΛΙΑ… Παρά τις πάμπολλες δικαιολογίες που απλόχερα χαρίζω όλο αυτό το διάστημα στον εαυτό μου -μετά από κάποια ηλικία ο χρόνος μοιάζει να τρέχει με ιλιγγιώδη ταχύτητα- έφτασε η στιγμή ν’ αντιμετωπίσω το γεγονός ότι οφείλω στον Μάνο τουλάχιστον μερικές μεταθανάτιες αράδες. Είμαστε πολλοί αυτοί που οφείλουμε στον Μάνο, γύρω στα δεκαπέντε εκατομμύρια! Δεν θα γράψω για όλους. Ας αναλάβει καθένας το μερίδιό του – μερικοί το έκαναν κιόλας…

Αντιπρόσωποι όλων των ηπείρων έφτασαν εδώ από τις ΗΠΑ, την Ευρώπη, τη Μέση Ανατολή, την Ινδία, τη Σιγκαπούρη, την Αυστραλία, τη Νέα Ζηλανδία... Οπως έγραψε ο Titus Nemeth, το ICTVC είναι ένα συνέδριο που δικαιώνει απόλυτα τον τίτλο του ως «παγκόσμιο». Ύπεύθυνοι για την υλοποίησή του ήταν το Τμήμα Σχεδιασμού και Πολυμέσων του Πανεπιστημίου Λευκωσίας, το Ινστιτούτο Μέσων Μαζικής Επικοινωνίας (ΙΜΜΕ) και η AlterVision, με την υποστήριξη σημαντικών ακαδημαϊκών ιδρυμάτων και φορέων που επιβεβαιώνουν την απήχηση και το κύρος του συνεδρίου σε διεθνές επίπεδο.

Αντιμετωπίζοντας την πραγματικότητα της καθημερινής ακαδημαϊκής ζωής τα τελευταία δύο χρόνια στην Κύπρο, πήρα αρκετές απαντήσεις στις προηγούμενες απορίες μου. Θεωρώ ότι είναι ιδιαίτερα σημαντικό οι υποψήφιοι φοιτητές και φοιτήτριες να έχουν μια ξεκάθαρη εικόνα τόσο για το περιεχόμενο και τις απαιτήσεις των προγραμμάτων σπουδών όσο και για τις προοπτικές τους, ακαδημαϊκές και επαγγελματικές. Η στάση αυτή ενισχύθηκε από την επισήμανση ότι αρκετοί παλαιότεροι φοιτητές, τους οποίους συνάντησα εδώ, δεν είχαν σαφή άποψη για το αντικείμενο των σπουδών τους. Οι πτυχιακές εργασίες τους κινούνταν σε θεματικές σχετικές με τις καλές τέχνες και όσοι επεδίωκαν μεταπτυχιακές σπουδές στο εξωτερικό, στρέφονταν κυρίως σε προγράμματα fne arts.

This study examines the design and production issues which affected the outlook and defined the development of the Greek newspaper from 1790 until the introduction of mechanical setting in Greece in the first decade of the present century.
The book is primarily concerned with typographical issues; thus, it follows a different path from that of previous works on the history of Greek printed matter which can be found in greek bibliography. It asserts that there exists a distinct design tradition in Greek newspaper production and intends to provide stimuli for further research in the field of greek printing along similar lines.
In his copiously illustrated study, Klimis Mastoridis has based an unexpectedly absorbing history of adaptation and innovation on the examination of hundreds of more than ordinarily elusive original materials.

Αν ήταν μια αντανάκλαση της στασιμότητας η προκατάληψη των εντυπώσεων περασμένων γενεών θα απαιτούσε ελάχιστη προσοχή από τους ιστορικούς και καμιά από αυτούς που εξασκούν τις τέχνες. "Hyphen" welcomes papers on typography and graphic communication and contributions at the meeting places between typography and other disciplines.
Nine volumes and fifteen issues have been published since 1998. The editor accepts contributions till the end of June and endeavours to acknowledge receipt within fifteen days after the contribution has arrived.
On acceptance, the editor will ask contributors to supply their work as a word-processed file. Illustrative matter, in digital or conventional form, accompanying the text should be in an acceptable form to allow for the best possible reproduction.
Proofs are sent to contributors about a month before publication. Contributors receive without charge three copies of the relevant volume.

Το "Υφέν" δέχεται άρθρα για την τυπογραφία και τη γραφική επικοινωνία καθώς και άρθρα από άλλους ακαδημαϊκούς χώρους, εφόσον αυτά αφορούν σε ζητήματα σχετικά με την τυπογραφία και τη γραφική επικοινωνία.
Από το 1998 έως σήμερα εκδόθηκαν εννέα τόμοι και 15 τεύχη.
Στη διεύθυνση του περιοδικού δεχόμαστε κείμενα για δημοσίευση έως τα τέλη Ιουνίου κάθε έτους. O εκδότης οφείλει να ενημερώνει τους αρθρογράφους ότι παρέλαβε το κείμενό τους σε διάστημα δεκαπέντε ημερών από την ημέρα παραλαβής.
Oι συγγραφείς οφείλουν να στείλουν το υλικό τους, μετά τη συμφωνία δημοσίευσης, σε ψηφιακή μορφή. Oι φωτογραφίες, σε ψηφιακή ή συμβατική μορφή, που συνοδεύουν τα κείμενα, θα πρέπει να είναι σε καλή κατάσταση για να επιτρέπουν την όσο το δυνατόν καλύτερη αναπαραγωγή.

We can claim that the history of printing in Cyprus remains an unexplored territory, especially when it comes to the documentation of historical and practical issues related to matters that concern the originators, their tools and materials as well as their products – and to the evaluation of these as cultural commodities. It is obvious that the pandemic affects our daily lives and the way we operate as educators, students or practitioners in the fields of typography and visual communication. The aim of the conference is to ‘see’ beyond the obvious, discussing examples from the past, deepening into the present, and raising important issues for the future in the areas of history, theory and practice. Among the plans of the Organizing Committee of the 2022 ICTVC is to have a special section on education, the challenges and opportunities in turbulent and uncertain times like these.
Since its inception in 2002, ICTVC has been established as one of the most prominent international events in its field. Supporting open, meaningful dialogue, the conference attracts people from many different countries and disciplines who share a passion for research, education, and practice in relation to typography and visual communication.

Despite the current climate we remain optimistic about our 6th ICTVC, which will take place in Thessaloniki, Greece, in July 2016.
In fact, we believe that this will be one of the largest ICTVCs ever, as the response has already been overwhelming!
After all, typography and design for visual communication do not exist in a vacuum; they reflect the economic and political spirit of the present playing often a decisive role in progressive sociopolitical change.
The deadline for abstract submissions is the 31st of October 2015.

This book is the first edited volume focusing on handwritten newspapers as an alternative medium from a wide interdisciplinary and international perspective. Our primary focus is on handwritten newspapers as a social practice. The case studies contextualize the source materials in relation to political, cultural, literary, and economic history. The analysis reveals both continuity and change across the different forms and functions of the textual materials.
In the 16th century, handwritten newspapers evolved as a news medium reporting history in the making. It was both a rather expensive public commodity and a gift exchanged in social relationships. Both functions appealed to public elites and their news consumption for about 300 years. From the late 18th century onwards, changing notions of publicness as well as the social needs of private or even secluded groups re-defined the medium. Handwritten newspapers turned more and more into an internal or even clandestine medium of communication. As such, it has served as a means to create social cohesion, political debate, and religious education for non-elite groups until the 20th century. Despite these changes, continuities can be observed both in the material layout of handwritten newspapers and the practices of distribution.

The 7th ICTVC took place from 17 to 21 June 2019 in Patras, Greece. The conference was organised by the Institute for the Study of Typography & Visual Communication in collaboration with the Library & Information Centre of the University of Patras and was supported by a number of academic and professional organisations with the aim to "examine the value of design for visual communication and provoke participants to challenge current assumptions". A series of workshops preceded the conference and a range of exhibitions framed and enriched the main event.

ICTVC is established worldwide as a major event that explores the world of typography and visual communication. Since its inception in 2002, people from diverse fields and different disciplines with a passion for visual language research, education, and practice, contribute to the conference. ICTVC attracts speakers and delegates on an international scale, and from a wide range of disciplines related to typography and design. The high quality of presentations is a hallmark of the conference. This time the conference theme is "against lethe..."; social, economic, political, cultural, and environmental issues that affect us all demand a new way of thinking. However, as we look forward we should not forget the lessons of the past. What has been the role of visual language against forgetting till now and what may happen in the future?
We would like to invite you to submit your proposals for 30 minute lectures or 20 minute presentations-reports for the main conference and the education strand, and 20 minute presentations for the Design Méditerranée strand.
The 5th ICTVC will take place from 6 to 8 June 2013 in Nicosia, Cyprus, on the campus of the University of Nicosia. A series of workshops will precede the conference, and exhibitions will run for the duration of the week.

For the first time in our design education history, a university department from Cyprus participated in this esteemed international assessment, initiated in 1975. Congratulations to third and fourth year “Graphic Communication” students of the Department of Design & Multimedia, University of Nicosia, Cyprus, for their excellent performance in the 2012 International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD) Student Assessment Scheme. Margarita Pissis, Andrea-Chloe Zitti, and Galatia Messaritou have been granted entry into this widely respected and industry recognised society for their contributions of excellent typographic merit. The three students and their tutors, Maria Stavride and Niki Sioki, will receive their respective certificates at a special event hosted by ISTD in London. the story... Eight students of the “Graphic Communication” programme of the Department of Design & Multimedia had the opportunity to participate in the ISDT 2012 Student Assessment. Working under the supervision of Lecturer Maria Stavride and Assistant Professor Niki Sioki, from October 2011 until May 2012, they attempted to creatively interpret the briefs provided by the ISDT Educational Committee with the aim to achieve the highest possible quality in typographic design. Their works were assessed on 2 June by ISTD Educators and are now exhibited at the “AYE 2011-2012”.

Ποια είναι τα αντανακλαστικά και με ποιον τρόπο αντιδρούν οι επαγγελματίες της πρακτικής και της εκπαίδευσης;
Ποια είναι τα κριτικά εργαλεία και μέχρι ποιο σημείο μπορούν ή είναι διατεθειμένοι να τα χρησιμοποιήσουν;
Ποιοι και με ποιους τρόπους καθορίζουν τα όρια του διαλόγου και ποιοι και για ποιους λόγους τα αποδέχονται;
Για 30 πρώτα, ο ΚΜ ανατέμνει μια μεσανατολική σχεδιαστική πραγματικότητα, βασανίζοντας το ερώτημα αν ο δρόμος για τη δημιουργική σύνθεση περνά απαραίτητα μέσα από την όξυνση και τη ρήξη.
Ποια είναι τα αντανακλαστικά και με ποιον τρόπο αντιδρούν οι επαγγελματίες της πρακτικής και της εκπαίδευσης;
