In this article a case of spina bifida sacralis occulta (SBSO) from the Pozzanghera necropolis of the ancient Greek colony of Leontinoi (Sicily) and archaeologically dated to the 6th–4th century BC is morphologically analysed and discussed. An ethnomedical excursus on the knowledge and impact of this condition in Sicilian history is offered. Although SBO is one of the most frequent congenital anomalies in the global palaeopathological record, a comprehensive literature search did not yield results for the history of Sicily before Christ, hence this case enriches existing knowledge on the historical presentation of this vertebral congenital anomaly in this region.

This paper presents the preliminary results of the study carried out by the author on a precise class of materials: Protogeometric B pottery from the site of Prinias, in central Crete. The pottery comes from the excavations conducted in the necropolis of Siderospilia, used from the end of XII century BC until the VII/VI century. A large assemblage of material has been so far analyzed, mostly consisting on figured specimens. Among this, a particular class of pithoi, characterized by straight sides and mostly used as cinerary urns, stands out for its quite unique features, finding comparisons just in Knossos and in few other Cretan sites. The impressive figured repertoire adopted in decorating PGB pottery (850-800 BC) does not find comparisons in continental Greece and it seems to reflect some sort of mixed tendency between Near Eastern influences, involving Crete in Early Iron age, and Minoan background. Keywords: Prinias, Protogeometric B, Pithos, Crete, Aegean

This paper addresses patterns of models' appropriation through Asian regions in the Hellenistic period, and focuses on two case-studies: on the one hand, subjects reproduced on miniature and widely diffused media (seal impressions from Seleucia on the Tigris), on the other, subjects engraved on luxuries linked to royal ideology and propaganda (ivory rhytons from Old Nisa). The same subjects occur at both sites, revealing that iconographies-and thus ideas-widely circulated and could be envisioned, devised, and appreciated in different contexts and by users of different communities or classes. Their meaning, originated in a Greek milieu, was object of appropriation and could be (re)elaborated for satisfying the demand of a multifarious patronage.

Empyema is a significant cause of morbidity in children. Treatment is still a matter of controversy between surgical and non-surgical options. We reviewed our experience with the use of video-assisted thoracoscopy (VATS) in the treatment of empyema and proposed an algorithm. We retrospectively reviewed all the pediatric patients recorded at our institution from January 2003 to December 2007 who were diagnosed with empyema and treated by surgery. 23 children with empyema were treated with VATS during the review period. Mean age was 58.9 months and the duration of symptoms before admission was 6.1 days. All patients had a parapneumonic empyema treated by preoperative antibiotics (17/23 by parenteral antibiotics and 6/23 by oral antibiotics). Pre-operative imaging included chest X-ray in all cases and ultrasonography in all cases but one and computed tomography in 3 (13%). Our 23 patients underwent VATS within 5.3 days of hospitalisation, the most recent patients within 2 days. Chest tubes were removed after 2.7 days (range 2 to 4) resulting in a postoperative length of stay (LOS) of 10.3 days (range 6 to 28). Total LOS was 13.3 days (range 8 to 30). One patient required a conversion to thoracotomy. One patient required prolonged mechanical ventilation due to a severe myopathy during the post operative course, but there were no complications or deaths. Followup was available for all patients who all remained symptom-free and suffered no recurrence (clinical and radiological). Early thoracoscopy for empyema in children is safe and efficient in the short and mid-term outcome. We describe an algorithm based on our initial experience and review the literature for the management of empyema in children.
