The Platonic Legacy about Poetry is transmitted to the Middle Ages by Boethius : at the beginning of the Consolatio, Philosophy pushes away the poetic Muses, too close to passions, according to Plato’s prescription in Rep. 398 A : the poet « able to imitate every aspect of life » is dangerous for the City and must be kept out of the community. On the one hand Poetry is close to the Revealed Truth ; on the other hand it is close to passions, according to the « melancolic» pattern of Aristotle, Probl. 10.1 : here’s the main Platonic challenge about Poetry herited by the Middle Ages. La riflessione sul rapporto tra poesia e teologia non è infatti «post-dantesca»41, così come la riflessione sulla poesia come linguaggio autonomo non è un approdo tardo medioevale legato alla Poetica aristotelica. Il punto di partenza è tardo antico, e comporta: 1) l’affermazione aristotelico-platonica di un nesso arcaico e “iniziale” tra poesia e teologia rappresentato dai poeti sapienziali, mantenuto dalla cultura cristiana; 2) l’affermazione di una opposizione tra Poesia e verità in Dante: una questione retorica? poesia e filosofia come conflitto tra immagine e concetto, tra nostalgia del mondo e liberazione dal mondo di origine varia e composita, i cui motivi, convogliati in un’opera capitale per il tema, cioè la Consolatio philosophie di Boezio, sono svolti e in certo modo ricomposti da Dante nel modo peculiare che abbiamo visto. This paper addresses one of the most important phenomena in medieval Italian literature, namely the interlacing of philosophy and literature. To this end, Taddeo Alderotti’s Etica in Volgare, a vernacular version of the Summa Alexandrinorum (a summary of Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics), is analyzed in terms of the main themes occurring in it, including the presence of images, the tension between Aristotelian man as a political animal and the ascetic man of the Christian tradition, and citizens depicted as “artifices” and through their influence on Guittone d’Arezzo and Dante.

This article draws a comparison between the thirteenth- and fourteenth-century library collection of the Dominican convent of Santa Maria Novella and that of the Franciscan convent of Santa Croce. Such an investigation casts new light on the links between philosophy and po- etry which enliven Dante’s literary production. In particular, the author considers Aristotelian works as potential vehicles of literary knowledge about, for instance, Homeric characters.

Conversatio / communicatio in Middle Ages means not a linguistic, but a moral condivision. By developing this concept of conversazione, in the third book of the Convivio, Dante reveals to the reader the real essence of Aristotelian knowledge: the Wisdom beloved by Solomon in the Bible. In Aristotelian terms, he says, Love is the «form» of the relationship between man and Knowledge because Wisdom loves the one who loves her (III xi). Thus, the desire for knowledge quoted by Dante at the beginning of the Convivio is not a mechanic impulse leading to an actualization of human potential, because the essence of Science revealed in the third treatise is the personal, mutual relationship between the knowing subject and the object known. This radically new essence of Science proposed by Dante is based upon the Love- Knowledge conceived by Saint Paul in I Cor 13, 12.

Come la controversia alfonsiana dimostra, Alfonso di Cartagena fu molto interessato alla tradizione medioevale italiana relativa all’Etica Nicomachea di Aristotele. L’articolo propone dunque testo e commento di alcuni capitoli dell’Etica in volgare di Taddeo Alderotti (XIII secolo), importante testo nato da questa tradizione, da cui dipende anche l’Etike di Brunetto Latini. Il testo proposto è dedicato alla magnanimità aristotelica, aspetto centrale nell’elaborazione europea del concetto di regalità.
