This article presents a description and analysis of a Persian translation and commentary of the Qurʾān, entitledTafsīr-i munīr, by Abū Naṣr al-Ḥaddādī (d. after 400/1009), the earliest exegetical work in Persian whose author can be identified. A manuscript of this multivolume work housed in the Topkapı Palace Museum of Istanbul offers an important historical testament to the calligraphic development of Persian exegetical writing and the manners in which scholars and authorities sought creative ways to visually balance the sacred Arabic text of the Qurʾān with vernacular exegetic material. The manuscript also reveals a good deal about Qurʾānic book art, as well as the development of Persian commentaries and translations, thus offering further insight into the history of the Qurʾān across the frontiers of Central Asia and Khurasan.

J.-C.) [A proposal for a two-word rereading of the pre-Islamic Arabic inscription of Ḥarrān (568-569 AD)]2020 •
Among the pre-Islamic inscriptions which are in Arabic, in Arabic script and perfectly dated, that of Ḥarrān, south of present-day Syria. It is a bilingual Greek-Arabic inscription, dated 463 from the Roman province of Arabia (106 AD), corresponding to 568-569 AD. The date is given in Nabataean numerals in the Arabic part of the inscription. Since its decipherment by Dussaud and Macler (1903), the third and fourth words of the first line are read br/bn ẓlmw and interpreted as (Šarāḥīl) "son of Ẓālim". Yet, in Greek, we have (ΣΑΡΑΕΛΟΣ) ΤΑΛΕΜΟΥ/(SARAELOS) TALEMOU. ΟΥ- is clearly the genitive of filiation corresponding to br/bn ; -w is the suffix wāw what is found in the Arabic names of Nabataean inscriptions, as well as in some papyrus of the beginning of the Islamic era. We propose to read what is written as br ṭlmw (ṭ and ẓ are homographs in archaic Arabic script) and to see in this Bar Ṭālimū an Arabization of the Aramaic Bar Tâlmi ("son of Ptolemy", Bartholomew), a Christian name consistent with the building, a martyrium dedicated to a St. John.

This paper focuses on the new wave of translations of the Qur'an that took place in Spain and Italy during the period 1450-1530 and are still partly unedited (Juan de Segovia, almost totally lost, two fragmentary translations of Guglielmo Raimondo Moncada, translation supervised by Egidio da Viterbo now edited...). Although these translations were more sophisticated than the preceding ones (often provided with bilingual texts and a more attentive use of Islamic exegesis), these translations were paradoxically not selected to become the first printed texts the Qur'an in the Latin world. The old Clunisiac translation of the XIIth century continued to be more successfull, perhaps because it was less sophisticated, and the Quattrocento translations were half-lost, half-destroyed. Thus we can assert that the history of Qur'anic knwoledge and Qur'anic translation in the Latin west was not unilinear.

Translation of Ḥālāt-i Pahlawān Muḥammad (Mīr ʿAlī Shīr Nawāʾī) in Journal of Sufi Studies2021 •
This paper is a French translation of Nawa’i (1441-1501)’s Halat-i Pahlawan Muhammad. Pahlawan Muhammad was a close friend of Nawa’i and a famous Sufi wrestler who died in 1493. In this text, he is also described as a poet, a musician, a physician and an astrologist. We also read about the charitable and social activities of his Sufi lodge. This hagiography differs from others in the role played by the author himself. Nawa’i’s description of his relationship with the protagonist of his narrative reveals the author’s conception of what should be a true Sufi ethos.
