Written in the last part of his life, the fundamental work of Paul the Deacon reconstitutes the odyssey of the Lombards from the time of their migration from Scandinavia to the peak flourishing of the kingdom they founded in Italy. The structural analysis proves that the six books of the work have, each, a well-defined central theme, which aims – among others – either at broadening the perspective, or at contextualising events that are more important, or at outlining the identity of this people in its most characteristic elements: origin, language, customs, organization manner, etc. Our study aims at analyzing some fragments within Historia Langobardorum (I, 14; II, 27; IV, 47-48; V, 1-33; V, 40-41) which, beyond an incontestable literary value, comprise certain considerations regarding the royal power, its legitimacy and the rapport – very important for the Carolingian period – between the royal and the ecclesiastical authority.

The emperor Constantine the Great was an important figure during the Middle Ages and he was taken as a political role model by some barbarian kings, Byzantine emperors and others Orthodox rulers. The „New Constantine” epithet is used as an imperial title by the emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos to emphasize his role in restoration of the imperial city and the empire institutions. After the fall of Byzantium, the rulers from Moscow, Tver and Moldavia were compared with Constantine. The article analyses the meanings of these aspects in the political and religious context of Eastern Europe in the second half of fifteenth century.
The imperial cult is generally seen as an instrument used by Roman authorities to ensure the fidelity of their subjects. In the cities of the Black Sea Pentapolis/Hexapolis, this phenomenon is visibly a two-way process, with the local communities developing imperial worship in several stages, in conjunction with the degree of involvement of the Roman authorities in the area. The paper will try to better analyze exactly in what context this process started, what were the actors involved and what were the results.
