Vito, Modesto e Crescenzia2017 •
The Passio of St Vitus survives in four still inedited Greek versions (BHG 1876, 1876a-c). The language and the style of these versions are really different. BHG 1876a and 1876a are clothed in a very «popular» linguistic garment, while BHG 1876b is written in a more elevated style. BHG 1876 presents a language that approaches the high style. This paper focuses on the Passio Greek versions lexis.
Nicephorus Gregoras (14th c.) was one of the most attentive readers of Photius' Library (9th c.). Nicephorus transcribed excerpts – of varying length and accuracy – from several chapters of this work. His excerpts are transmitted in the following manuscripts: Vat. gr. 130, Laur. plut. 70.5 and Pal. Heid. gr. 129. This paper reconsiders the extracts copied by Nicephorus as a whole, insofar as they are evidence of: an intensive reading of the Library; a personal and idiosyncratic method of both taking notes and excerpts and reusing them. It is argued here that the excerpts are the result of Nicephorus' long-lasting acquaintance with Photius’ Library, and is shown how and where Nicephorus occasionally reused Photius’ quotations in his own work. The nature and the text of the excerpts are re-examined (as for mss. Vat. gr. 130 and Laur. plut. 70.5) or examined here for the first time (Pal. Heid. gr. 129). A systematic collation shows that Nicephorus copied the excerpts in Laur. 70.5 from ms. Paris. gr. 1266. It is also demonstrated here that Nicephorus read ms. Paris. gr. 1266, which bears his typical notes (semeiosai), as is pointed out in this paper. The collation also shows that the excerpts from Photius’ Library in Pal. Heid. gr. 129 (and perhaps in Vat. gr. 130) are most probably transcribed from Marc. gr. 450. Marc. gr. 450 does not show traces of Nicephorus’ hand in its margins, but, significantly, Nicephorus’ excerpts are taken from passages already highlighted in the Marcianus, by way of longer marginalia and/or semeiosai. A critical edition of the excerpts in Pal. gr. 129 is also included as an Appendix, aiming to elucidate the textual divergences between these and Photius’ text in the critical apparatus.
