This study was carried out to determine the presence and quantity of some selected pesticides from soil sediments collected from some ponds and canals located in the Lakshmipur district of Bangladesh. The high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) technique was used to determine the concentration of pesticide residues. Some soil samples were found to be contaminated with carbamate (carbofuran and carbaryl) and organophosphorus (diazinon) pesticides. The concentration of carbofuran pesticide ranged from 0.303 μg/kg to 1.851 μg/kg. The highest concentration of carbofuran pesticide was found in SSP6 (1.851 μg/kg) and the lowest concentration was found in SSP9 (0.303 μg/kg). Carbaryl pesticide was found to be present in the sediment of only one pond, the concentration being 1.047 μg/kg. Organophosphorus (diazinon) pesticide was found in soil samples and the concentrations ranged from 0.147 μg/kg to 0.759 μg/kg, which were higher than the EEC-recommended limit of 0.1 μg/kg.

Identification and quantification of pesticide residues in water samples of Dhamrai Upazila, Bangladesh2017 •
Being agricultural country, different types of pesticides are widely used in Bangladesh to prevent the crop losses due to pest attack which are ultimately drain to the water bodies. The present study was conducted to identify and quantify the organochlorine (DDT, DDE and DDD), organophosphorus (malathion, diazinon and chloropyrifos) and carbamate (carbaryl) residues in water samples of different sources from Dhamrai upazila of Bangladesh using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) equipped with ultra violate (UV) detector. Thirty water samples from fish pond, cultivated land and tube-well were collected in winter season to analyze the pesticide residues. Among the organophosphorus pesticides, malathion was present in seven water samples ranging from 42.58 to 922.8 lg/L, whereas diazinon was detected in water sample-8 (WS-8) and the concentration was 31.5 lg/L. None of the tested water samples was found to be contaminated with chlorpyrifos, carbaryl or DDT and its metabolites (DDE and DDD). Except for a tube-well water sample, concentrations of the detected residues are above the acceptable limit for human body as assigned by different organizations. To avoid the possible health hazards, the indiscriminate application of pesticides should be restricted and various substitute products like bio-pesticide should be introduced in a broad scale as soon as possible.

Abstract: Several types of organophosphorous and carbamate pesticides have been used extensively by the farmers in Bangladesh during the last few decades. Twenty seven water samples collected from both paddy and vegetable fields in the Savar and Dhamrai Upazilas in Bangladesh were analyzed to determine the occurrence and distribution of organophosphorus (chlorpyrifos, malathion and diazinon) and carbamate (carbaryl and carbofuran) pesticide residues. A high performance liquid chromatograph instrument equipped with a photodiode array detector was used to determine the concentrations of these pesticide residues. Diazinon and carbofuran were detected in water samples collected from Savar Upazila at 0.9 μg/L and 198.7 μg/L, respectively. Malathion was also detected in a single water sample at 105.2 μg/L from Dhamrai Upazila. Carbaryl was the most common pesticide detected in Dhamrai Upazila at 14.1 and 18.1 μg/L, while another water

Trends of Chemical Pesticide Consumption and its Contamination Feature of Natural Waters in Especial Reference to Bangladesh: A ReviewCollection of chemicals that can resist pests and diseases, pesticides are now an extensively used tool for pest and disease managing across agrarian countries like Bangladesh. In the country, pesticide use grew at an alarming rate of 10% per annum, while the corresponding response in production growth of main crops has been negligible (<1% y). Globally, 750% increase in pesticides production from 1955 to 2000 and 1 that period minimum 30 countries have highly contaminated by these hazardous substances. Bangladesh lies in the second position on the list of fast-growing pesticide-consuming countries in the world. The review paper focused on the present pesticide consumption rate in the country and entire world, their environmental fate and how much contaminate the natural water resources through the application of chemical pesticides. For this purpose, we reviewed over 50 related literatures to extract expressive info about the national wide water contamination by pesticides and presented methodically. Results show that among the Organophosphorus and Carbamate pesticides such as Chlorpyrifos, Diazinon, Malathion, Parathion, Carbaryls, Carbofuran and Cypermethrin was identified in various surfaces and groundwater samples and maximum of those are above the World Health Organization (WHO) guideline value. The serious concern is that in many regions of Bangladesh, organochlorine insecticides such as Dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane (DDD), Dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane (DDE), Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), Aldrin and Dieldrin was found in the range of 0.01 to 1.20 mg/L which are much higher than recognized level. To control the misapplication of pesticides and to reduce the possible environmental risk, appropriate regulatory systems of pests such as the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) system and the use of bio-or herbal pesticides should be applied immediately in the country.

Pesticide residues analysis in water samples of Nagarpur and Saturia Upazila, Bangladesh2018 •
Pesticides used to protect the crops from pest attack in the agricultural fields pose harmful effect to the non-target organisms such as human and many other aquatic and terrestrial organisms either directly or indirectly through food chain. The present study was conducted to monitor a total of seven pesticide residues under organochlorine, organophosphorus and carbamate pesticides in three different sources of pond water, paddy field water and tube-well water from Nagarpur Upazila and paddy field water in the company of Dhaleshwari and Gazikhali river water from Saturia Upazila, Bangladesh. A total of 40 water samples were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography equipped with ultraviolet detector. Among the organo-phosphorus pesticides, diazinon was detected in eight water samples at a concentration ranging from 4.11 to 257.91 μg/l whereas, malathion was detected only in one water sample at a concentration of 84.64 μg/l and chlorpyrifos pesticide was also detected only in one water sample and the concentration was 37.3 μg/l. Trace amount of carbaryl was identified but it was below the detection limit. None of the tested water samples was found to be contaminated with DDT or its metabolites (DDE and DDD). The water samples contaminated with the suspected pesticides were above the acceptable limit except for the fish pond samples of Sahabatpur and Dubaria union. To control the misuse of pesticides and to reduce the possible health risk, appropriate control systems of pests such as integrated pest management system should be implemented immediately by the authorities of the country. Study on Organochlorine and Organophosphorus Pesticide Residues in Surface and Underground Water Samples of Daudkandi Upazila in Bangladesh2019 •
The farmers of Bangladesh mainly rely on pesticides for pest control to boost the crop production. This study was carried out to ascertain the presence and subsequent amount of some organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticide residues in water samples collected from pond, ditch and tube-well of Daudkandi upazila. Using the High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) a total of thirty water samples was examined to evaluate the suspected pesticide residues. Among the organophosphorus pesticides, diazinon was detected only in one water sample at a concentration of 651 µg/l, whereas, eleven water samples were found to be contaminated with malathion ranging from 1000 to 8200 µg/l. Chlorpyrifos was also detected only in one water sample at a concentration of 31 µg/l. None of the tested water samples was found to be contaminated with suspected organochlorine pesticide residues. On the other hand, tube-well water samples were totally free from suspected pesticide residues. Appropriate measures should be taken to lessen the over dependence on pesticide in agriculture and thus decrease the possible health risk of the people.
