Simulation and planning is one of the best ways for an organisation like the Red Cross to ensure that it can adequately and effectively respond to emergencies. Computer simulation is an effective method of visualising these scenarios and identifying the resources, equipment and timescales that will be required. However, such work requires careful design, resources and time that such organisations more often than not lack. In this study, we will integrate flood simulation data, geo-demographics data, an Open Source Vulnerability Index (OS-VI) (Garbutt et al., 2015), a relief distribution framework produced with NGO partners and an agent-based model (ABM) to simulate multiple flood emergency scenarios and investigate the possible outcomes from a variety of different relief distribution strategies (changes in relief centre and distribution point locations, targeting of affected areas based upon projected needs etc.) as well as model the actions of affected communities. The spatially explicit ABM will dynamically model and visualize the movements, decisions, actions and interactions of responder and affected agents. The actions of responder agents will be guided by response strategies dictated by users and the actions and decisions of affected agents will be guided by the demographics and vulnerability information provided by the OS-VI. The objectives of this research are to examine the overall value of a geospatial ABM for response strategy management; to provide emergency response managers with a planning tool that provides socio-cultural and vulnerability context to flood events and relief distribution strategies; and to offer an alternative to expensive real-world planning exercises.

Attention Bias Modification (ABM) targets attention bias (AB) towards threat and is a potential therapeutic intervention for anxiety. The current study investigated whether initial AB (towards or away from spider images) influenced the effectiveness of ABM in spider fear. AB was assessed with an attentional probe task consisting of spider and neutral images presented simultaneously followed by a probe in spider congruent or spider incongruent locations. Response time (RT) differences between spider and neutral trials > 25 ms was considered 'Bias Toward' threat. RT difference < - 25 ms was considered 'Bias Away' from threat, and a difference between -25 ms and +25 ms was considered 'No Bias'. A camera focuses on one or both eyes and records their movement as the viewer looks at some kind of stimulus. Most modern eye-trackers use the center of the pupil and infrared / near-infrared non-collimated light to create cornealreflections(CR). The vector between the pupil center and the cornealreflections can be used to compute the point of regard on surface or the gaze direction. A simple calibration procedure of the individual is usually needed before using the eye tracker. This paper presents a review of the related works in the field as well as a general classification of different identification types. We stated a formal description of a saccade and an analyzed fragment of the gaze trajectory containing a saccade, which is based on the finite differences method, and revealed features of the eye movements that can be used for the identification purpose. Two classifiers are proposed and compared based on the experimental results obtained for them and we examined whether the delivery of an attentional bias modification (ABM) procedure in the presleep period could produce transient benefits for sleep-disturbed individuals by reducing presleep cognitive arousal and improving ease of sleep onset. In a counterbalanced repeated A-B design, participants alternated completing an These results suggest that delivery of ABM can attenuate cognitive arousal and sleep onset latency and highlights the possibility that targeted delivery of ABM could deliver real- world benefits for sleep-disturbed individuals.

This study identified the different management practices and strategies of student entrepreneurs on running their business as well as handling the varying factors that they encounter from time to time. The challenges and coping practices of student entrepreneurs were also highlighted in this study. This research was conducted to identify and to analyze the different skill-related dimensions and practices of student entrepreneurs among the SHS and college students of Ateneo de Davao University.  Through qualitative inquiry, this study followed the phenomenological design by gathering information on the lived experiences of seven student entrepreneurs from the senior high school and college unit of Ateneo de Davao University. Through this study, we found out that student entrepreneurs manage their business by prioritizing it over other activities in their lives, by proper allocation of income and through role models that influence their management practices as they run their business. We also learned that student entrepreneurs have different strategies on running their business such as considering varying external factors, committing to actions to improve their business rather than being passive, and having proper estimation of the necessary products that will be sold for a specific period. However, student entrepreneurs are still being challenged with proper balance between school and their business venture. Nevertheless, student entrepreneurs cope up with these challenges by making it as their motivation to further improve their products and by responding positively to the criticisms that they receive

The overall purpose of the study is to identify the perception of the Grade 11 ABM students in San Sebastian College – Recoletos de Cavite (SSC-RdC) regarding the traditional and block schedule. The study concerns the student’s welfare and may provide suggestion and recommendation to the administration with regards to the appropriate schedule for the students. Using case study and convenience sampling design, these helped the researchers to provide and record the needed information from the respondents. It also helped in assessing the perception of the Grade 11 ABM students with regard to the benefits and effect to the students’ academic performance. Results revealed that of 40 students, 62.5% of the respondents agreed that they excel more in their academics with the blocked schedule than the traditional with the percentage of 35.5. The qualitative findings for the study leaded to certain conclusions: (1) The Grade 11 students taking the ABM strand preferred blocked schedule the most; (2) Blocked schedule is not that effective in maintaining the focus and attention span of the students; (3) Blocked scheduling is the most effective type of schedule based on the respondents’ perspective; (4) The time scheduling used has a major effect in the students’ achievement; (5) The instructor’s teaching strategies and the type of schedule used plays a major role in the comprehension and understanding of the lessons and concepts by the students. In terms of the effective schedule in the student’s learning, most of the respondents said that they prefer traditional schedule more than the blocked schedule. Thus, this concluded that there is significant relationship in scheduling system to the academic achievement of the students.

Difficulty can be a hardship, an obstacle, a hindrance or a
problem. In the study, it was used as a thing that is hard to
accomplish, deal with, or understand. In line with studying, the current Grade 11 and 12 students who are currently taking the Accounting, Business and Management strand experiences problems regarding their specialized subjects. The purpose of this study is to know the obstacles they are facing because the researchers, as ABM Students themselves, seek to find answers
on what are the difficulties that the ABM students are facing as well as how do they cope up with such. As future businessmen and businesswomen, the researchers aim to know how to be successful. But before doing that, we should fill our mind with skills, learning and knowledge to enhance our capabilities and cognitive capacity. Raising awareness on the certain factors that
affects the ABM Students’ in dealing with the introductory tertiary level subjects is what the research aims to flourish. Difficulties that were found are the lack of background, difficulty in understanding, teaching methods of the teacher, and the lack of time and preparation (study habits) in studying.There are ways that ABM students cope with the difficulties by doing self study or by having long periods of study sessions, by peer tutorials, as well as the acquisition of self motivation and commitment to the path they are heading to.

In the last decade, the investigation of the social complexity has witnessed the rise of Computational Social Science, a research paradigm that heavily relies upon data and computation to foster our understanding of social phenomena. In this field, a key role is played by the explanatory and predictive power of agent-based social simulations that are showing to take advantage of GIS, higher number of agents and real data. We focus GIS based distibuted ABMs. We observed that the density distribution of agents, over the field, strongly impact on the overall performances. In order to better understand this issue, we analyzes three different scenarios ranging from real positioning, where the citizens are positioned according to a real dataset to a random positioning where the agent are positioned uniformly at random on the field. Results confirm our hypothesis and show that an irregular distribution of the agents over the field increases the communication overhead. We provide also an analytic analysis which, in a 2-dimensional uniform field partitioning, is affected by several parameters (which depend on the model), but is also influenced by the density distribution of agents over the field. According to the presented results, we have that uniform space partitioning strategy does not scale on GIS based ABM characterized by an irregular distribution of agents.

Massive diffusion of green technologies is significant for building a cleaner world. However, the process of technology diffusion is usually slow and complex. An in-depth understanding of the mechanism regarding green technology diffusion is an essential precondition for effectively stimulating this process. Green technology diffusion heavily involves both social and technological changes. Although existing studies have provided rich knowledge about identifying critical drivers and barriers affecting green technology diffusion, research that considers consumers' pro-environmental attitudes and green technology diffusion as an evolving system is still sparse. Aiming at exploring the co-evolution of consumers' pro-environmental attitudes and green technology diffusion, this paper builds an agent-based model that integrates the relative agreement model with technology diffusion theories to conduct a sequence of controlled numerical experiments, which progressively unveil how attitudinal and technological factors impact green technology diffusion. The main findings include that (1) improving consumers' pro-environmental attitudes is prominently beneficial to green technology diffusion and maturation; (2) technology maturity has very limited impact on consumers' first-time purchases but significantly affects consumers' satisfaction, which would further impact consumers' repeat purchases; (3) consumers that do not support green technologies frequently emerge during the evolution of attitudes (despite the high technology maturity), which corresponds to the emergence of the anti-environmental groups observed in the real world; (4) active interactions between non-adopters enable their attitudes to converge, which results in the polarization of consumers' attitudes.

An agent-based model conflict between herdsmen in east Africa using the MASON agent-based simulation environment is presented. Herders struggle to keep their herds fed and watered in a GIS-based, spatially diverse environment with data-driven seasonal cycles. The model produces realistic carrying capacity dynamics and basically plausible conflict dynamics. With the rather basic set of behaviors, herders come into conflict over limited resources and one clan is eventually eliminated. We find that greater environmental scarcity leads to faster domination by a single group. At the same time, we note that there is tremendous variability from run to run in the rate and timing of the transition from a conflict-prone, multi-clan environment to hegemony of a single group.

Two different designs of meander line antenna are investigated, without conductor line and with conductor line. Microwave Office software is used for simulation designed process. The antenna is fabricated on a double-sided FR-4 printed circuit board using an etching technique. Then the design has been tested with the Advantest Network Analyzer. The comparison between simulation and measurement results for the return loss and radiation patterns were presented. A bandwidth of 152 MHz and return loss of -37.7 dB were obtained at frequency 2.4 GHz. The gain is comparable to microstrip yagi antenna.

This work presents a multi-agent-based computational model of an artificial fractional reserve banking system. The model is implemented in NetLogo. The computational experiments and simulations we performed to analyse the proposed model show that different scenarios can lead to bank insolvency. We show that both the minimum reserve rate and the loss of confidence have large contributions to the insolvency of a bank, suggesting them as likely destabilizing economic forces driving the dynamics of the model.

Agent-based modelling (ABM) is becoming the dominant paradigm in social simulation due primarily to a worldview that suggests that complex systems emerge from the bottom-up, are highly decentralised, and are composed of a multitude of heterogeneous objects called agents. These agents act with some purpose and their interaction, usually through time and space, generates emergent order, often at higher levels than those at which such agents operate. ABM however raises as many challenges as it seeks to resolve. It is the purpose of this paper to catalogue these challenges and to illustrate them using three somewhat different agent-based models applied to city systems. The seven challenges we pose involve: the purpose for which the model is built, the extent to which the model is rooted in independent theory, the extent to which the model can be replicated, the ways the model might be verified, calibrated and validated, the way model dynamics are represented in terms of agent interactions, the extent to which the model is operational, and the way the model can be communicated and shared with others. Once catalogued, we then illustrate these challenges with a pedestrian model for emergency evacuation in central London, a hypothetical model of residential segregation model tuned to London data, and an agent-based residential location model, for Greater London. The ambiguities posed by this new style of modelling are drawn out as conclusions, and the relative arbitrariness of such modelling highlighted.

The aim of this paper is to outline fundamental concepts and principles of the Agent-Based Modelling (ABM) paradigm, with particular reference to the development of geospatial simulations. The paper begins with a brief definition of modelling, followed by a classification of model types, and a comment regarding a shift (in certain circumstances) towards modelling systems at the individual-level. In particular, automata approaches (e.g. Cellular Automata, CA, and ABM) have been particularly popular, with ABM moving to the fore. A definition of agents and agent-based models is given; identifying their advantages and disadvantages, especially in relation to geospatial modelling. The potential use of agent-based models is discussed, and how-to instructions for developing an agent-based model are provided. Types of simulation / modelling systems available for ABM are defined, supplemented with criteria to consider before choosing a particular system for a modelling endeavour. Information pertaining to a selection of simulation / modelling systems (Swarm, MASON, Repast, StarLogo, NetLogo, OBEUS, AgentSheets and AnyLogic) is provided, categorised by their licensing policy (open source, shareware / freeware and proprietary systems). The evaluation (i.e. verification, calibration, validation and analysis) of agent-based models and their output is examined, and noteworthy applications are discussed.

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are a particularly useful medium for representing model input and output of a geospatial nature. However, GIS are not well suited to dynamic modelling (e.g. ABM). In particular, problems of representing time and change within GIS are highlighted. Consequently, this paper explores the opportunity of linking (through coupling or integration / embedding) a GIS with a simulation / modelling system purposely built, and therefore better suited to supporting the requirements of ABM. This paper concludes with a synthesis of the discussion that has proceeded.

The Justification of the Greek contribution to the originally aforementioned proposed document is as follows:
1.  The Commission document links the strategy for space and the technical means for implementing this policy. The draftsman takes the view that this document should be simpler and address only the strategy and not the technical means for implementing it, which is the business of the space programme.
2.  The document under consideration, which was drawn up by the Commission together with the ESA, attaches limited importance to the use of space for international security and has three objectives:
-  'strengthening the foundation for space activities',
-  'enhancing scientific knowledge for a better understanding of our planet' and
-  ' reaping the benefits for markets and society'.

The draftsman would add a further point:
- to strengthen the implementation of CFSP in this field in order to establish a European presence in the use of space, especially after the tragic events of 11 September 2001.
3.  CFSP is covered only by the third objective of the strategy document, and is further limited in scope in the analysis of this objective, since CFSP is associated exclusively with the thematic area of global observation and global change, which ignores the fact that satellite telecommunications, navigation and positioning and information from satellite systems constitute a basic precondition for the development of European security and thus fall within the framework of CFSP. However, the same document acknowledges that space activities in Europe have so far been largely focused on the first two objectives and points out that the technical capabilities exist to meet all three.

4.  The limited attention paid to CFSP is due in all probability to the fact that:
- CFSP is still under development,
- the ESA which - owing to the task assigned to it - attaches greater importance to relations with research and industry, played a key role in drawing up this document.
5.  The draftsman takes the view that the most competent authority for satellite matters which raise security issues is the satellite centre of the WEU which from the beginning of 2002 will be a European Union agency. Owing to the present transitional period which runs until the end of 2001, this body has not been properly used to address issues falling within its sphere of competence. This applies both to the above document and to the joint Task Force.
6.  The draftsman believes the forthcoming report on European Space Policy should become the principal document on which the EU will base its planning of space activities. In its deliberations on setting out a clear European Space Policy, the EU should take account of the existing multiannual programmes of the UN's Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and its Committee on Disarmament, as well as of the relevant experience of the WEU.

I describe an agent-based model to study the evolution of paternal care. The reported n-person Iterated Prisoner’s Dilemma shows that the relative differences in the reproductive effort between sexes can explain the evolution of paternal care. When female reproductive costs are higher than male reproductive costs, males cooperate with females even when females do not reciprocate. Paternal care is thus an evolutionary achievement to compensate for the energy demands that reproduction involves for mothers. Paternal care, in turn, produces a sustained population growth, since females can reproduce at higher rates.

In this article, we present a geographically explicit agent-based model (ABM), loosely coupled with vector geographical information systems (GISs), which explicitly captures and uses geometric data and socioeconomic attributes in the simulation process. The ability to represent the urban environment as a series of points, lines, and polygons not only allows one to represent a range of different-sized features such as buildings or larger areas portrayed as the urban environment but is a move away from many ABMs utilizing GIS that are rooted in grid-based structures. We apply this model to the study of residential segregation, specifically creating a Schelling (1971) type of model within a hypothetical cityscape, thus demonstrating how this approach can be used for linking vector-based GIS and agent-based modeling. A selection of simulation experiments are presented, highlighting the inner workings of the model and how aggregate patterns of segregation can emerge from the mild tastes and preferences of individual agents interacting locally over time. Furthermore, the article suggests how this model could be extended and demonstrates the importance of explicit geographical space in the modeling process.

The main aim of this paper is to motivate Czech sociological community to start to use agent-based modelling (ABM) method. The paper first describes on the practical example (extended Schelling's model of ethnic segregation) the gist of ABM without need of deep mathematical knowledge and programming skills. Then the paper describes roots of ABM and its history. Influence of the development of computing power is stressed. The main part introduces leading scholars in the field of ABM and also describes classical studies. The next part describes the state of the art of the ABM in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The paper concludes with stressing potential benefits of ABM for sociological theory building.

The aim of this work is to study the feasibility of using agent-based modeling to study the activated sludge process. A model in NetLogo has been proposed, and experiments have been developed comparing the model behavior with a classical modeling approximation for this process, the Monod model.
