Bu kitap; duygusal ve davranışsal bozukluklara sahip öğrenciler hakkında bilgi sahibi olmak isteyen sınıf öğretmenleri, özel eğitim öğretmenleri ve alanda çalışan uzmanlar için hazırlanmış giriş niteliğinde bir uygulama kitabıdır. Her bir bozukluğun nedeni, tanımlanması, güncel araştırmalar ışığında verilmeye çalışılmış ve okul ortamındaki pratik uygulamalarla da anlatım zenginleştirilmiştir. Bunlara ek olarak belirli bir bozukluğun tüm yönlerine ilişkin temel yaklaşımla birlikte bilimsel olarak geliştirilmiş müdahele yöntemleri de verilmeye çalışılmıştır.

Bu kitabın alanda yeni çalışmaya başlayan öğretmenler kadar güncel verilerle desteklenen tanı koyma ve müdahele stratejilrine önem vermesi nedeniyle alanda uzun süredir çalışmakta olan öğretmenlere ve uzmanlara da yararlı olacağını düşünmekteyiz.

Ünlü eğitim psikoloğu Robert Slavin'in Eğitim Psikolojisi kitabının onuncu baskısı, kuramı uygulamaya aktarma konusunda önemli bir eksikliği gidermekte ve öğretmenlerin sınıfta ihtiyaç duyabilecekleri alanlarda uygulayabilecekleri bilgileri içermektedir.

Kitap, yansıtıcı ve bilinçli bir öğretmenin uygulayabileceği en yeni araştırmaları sunarak, bilinçli öğretmen üzerine odaklanmaktadır. Slavin'e göre bilinçli öğretmen, uygulamasını devamlı surette yansıtan ve bu uygulamaların öğrencileri nasıl etkilediği hakkında net bir düşünceye dayalı olarak öğretim kararları veren kişidir.

Bu kitapta okuyucular alanda önemli ve yeni ortaya çıkan bazı konular ile karşılaşmaktadır. Robert Slavin, akademik derinliğini sergilerken aynı zamanda sanki ders anlatır gibi okuyucuları ile yüz yüze buluşmayı da amaçlamaktadır. Kitap yeni ve farklı bir yaklaşımla pek çok teorik bilgiyi uygulamalı olarak sunan, teorik bilgilerin kavramsal olarak uygulamaya nasıl dönüştürüleceğini göstererek öğretmeyi amaçlayan ve bunda başarılı olduğu açıkça belli olan iyi bir başvuru ve ders kitabı olarak öğrencilere ve eğiticilere önerilmektedir.

Uzmanlar, klinisyenler ve araştırmacılar, yeme bozukluklarının duygusal düzensizliklerden kaynaklandığı vakalarda Diyalektik Davranış Terapisinin etkin olacağı konusunda hemfikirdi. Alanda yapılan pek çok adaptasyon çalışması olmasına rağmen Debra Safer, Christy Telch ve Eunice Chen bunu deneysel bazda yapan ilk kişilerdir. Standart diyalektik davranış terapisinin, tıkanırcasına yeme bozukluğu ve blumia nervoza semptomlarını tedavi etme yollarının yapılandırılmış bir özetini sunan bu kitap ile alandaki ihtiyaca cevap vermişlerdir. Bu alanda çalışan klinik psikologların ve danışmanların mutlaka okuması gereken önemli bir kaynak olmakla birlikte bu alanda okuyan öğrenciler için de farklı bir bakış açısı kazandırmaktadır.
Dokuz bölümden oluşan bu kitapta tedavi kapsamlı olarak ele alınmıştır. Genel çerçevede, olumsuz duygularla başa çıkmanın daha uyumsal yollarını öğreten becerilerin kazanımı ile tıkanırcasına yeme ve boşaltmayı durdurma hedefine ulaşma yolu adım adım çizilmiştir. Blumia nervoza ve tıkanırcasına yeme bozukluğuna sahip insanların karılaştığı sorunlar ve mevcut tedavi yöntemleri ele alınarak okuyucuya genel bir bakış açısı kazandırılır. Standart terapinin detaylı bir şekilde tanıtımından sonra bunun adaptasyonunun neden gerekli olduğu, adapte etmenin mantığı mevcut kanıtlar ile sunulur. Daha sonra, tedavi öncesi ve başlangıç oturumlarından tedaviyi sonlandırmaya kadar olan süreç aşama aşama ele alınır. Nüksetmeyi önleme kısmına değinilir. Son olarak kapsamlı vaka örnekleri ile anlatılanların sağlam temeller üzerine oturması sağlanır.
Amacına uygun şekilde düzenlen bu kitap, diyalektik davranış terapisi adapte edilirken belirli sınırlar çizmek yerine okuyucuya geliştirilebilir bir zemin hazırlar. Bu yönüyle tedaviyi uygulamaya ve geliştirmeye teşvik eder. Açıklayıcı vaka örnekleri ve kanıtlar ile tedaviyi tüm ayrıntılarıyla sunarak farklı alanlardan okuyuculara hitap eden bu titiz çalışma özellikle alandaki uzmanlara klinik psikologlara, danışmanlara ve araştırmacılar için bir rehber niteliğinde olacak niteliktedir.

Toplumsal etkileşimin olduğu her yerde, anlaşmazlıkların olması doğal ve kaçınılmazdır. Kişiler, gruplar ve toplumlar arası anlaşmazlıklar; doğru bir biçimde yönetildiğinde gelişimin, ilerlemenin, dönüşümün, barışın ve bütünleşmenin hem enerji kaynağı hem de motoru olabilmektir. Ancak, anlaşmazlıklar yanlış ve yıkıcı yaklaşımlarla yönetildiğinde ise; yıkımın, şiddetin, zulmün ve acının kaynağına dönüşmektedir.

Anlaşmazlıkları ortadan kaldırma, farklılığı ortadan kaldırmaktadır. Doğa ve insanlık, farklılığı ve çoklığı kabul etmeyi ve anlamayı gerektirir. Farklılığı ortadan  kaldırmaya çalışmak yerine; onu anlamaya ve nasıl yöneteceğimizi keşfetmeye başladığımızda, yolumuz anlaşmazlıklarımızı nasıl yöneteceğimizden geçmektedir. Anlaşmazlıkları nasıl yöneteceğimiz üzerine odaklandığımızda, karşımıza en temel yaklaşım ve paradigma olan "dönüşümsel arabuluculuk" çıkmaktadır.Dönüşümsel arabuluculuğun alanyazına en önemli katkısı, anlaşmazlık çözüm sürecinin toplumsal değerlerden ve kültürden bağımsız olmadığı,ideolojimizin ve inanç tarzımızın anlaşmazlıklara ilişkin değerlendirmelerimizi, tutumlarımızı ve anlaşmazlıklarımızı ele alış tarzımızı etkilediği düşüncesidir. Yine, dönüşümsel arabuluculuğun en ayırt edici özelliği, anlaşmazlıkları yönetim sürecinin, kişileri dönüştürebileceğine, geliştirebileceğine ve güçlendirebileceğine yönelik yapıcı ve olumlu duruşudur.

Bush ve P. Folger tarafından geliştirilen "dönüşümsel arabuluculuk modeli" ülkemizde, her sene mahkemelere taşınan yüz binlerce anlaşmazlığı, çekişmeyi ve ayrışmayı yüz yüze müzakere ederek yapıcı ve barışçıl olarak çözme kapasitesini güçlendirmek için bir fırsat ve araç olacaktır. Cezalandırıcı adalet anlayışından, onarıcı adalet anlayışına dönme çabalarına ışık tutacaktır.

Bu eser,içerdiği alternatif paradigma çerçevesinde hukuk sistemimize yeni giren arabuluculuk modelinin doğru ve amacına uygun kullanılması için de referans olacak anlamlı ve önemli bir eserdir. Buna ek olarak, anlaşmazlık çözümü üzerine çalışan hukukçulara, psikologlara, psikolojik danışmanlara, eğitimcilere, psikiyatristlere ve sosyal çalışmacılara hem kurumsal anlamda hem de somut anlaşmazlıkların ve çatışmaların yapıcı ve barışcıl yönetimi konusunda yol gösterecek temel bir başvuru kaynağı olacaktır.

How is going to be professionalism for RMAs in a post-pandemic era?  Which skills are expected to be in demand? Following these questions, this presentation aims to define what professionalism for today’s RMAs is – consisting of qualifications, associations, and professional frameworks, among others – but, above all, what we could expect this professionalism to be – with its set of skills and expectations - in a post-pandemic future.
For the reasons set above, research managers (RMAs) could be expected to reshuffle their skills and re-invent themselves, not only to cope with an era where even professional knowledge has a limited lifespan, which was already something to expect, according to Barnett (2008); but also to create a new idea of professionalism and up-to-date skills for the times lying ahead.
The presentation is meant to be theoretical, with an empirical part describing cases of skills we could expect to acquire or need. It moves from the search of a definition of RMA to explain the move from administration to management; from here, what skills we can expect to seek in the current age and in an early future. Thus, a variety of sources on skills in HE and other sectors have been considered and compared; and it comes up that the core skills in a post-pandemic age are primarily the soft ones.
Overall, the core message for RMAs is to 'go wider' and focus beyond the field of practice of RMA, so on related fields of HE more broadly and HEM. But also to look at other professional groups and associations since their perspective could strengthen their understanding of themselves, their community, and their profession in today's HE.

The Success and Happiness Attributes Questionnaire (SHAQ) was developed primarily from ideas in my book, You Can Choose To Be Happy: “Rise Above” Anxiety, Anger, and Depression  It assumes a cognitive systems model of human personality and behavior and emphasizes the importance of cognitions (values, beliefs, knowledge, thoughts, skills, etc.) for influencing both emotions and behavior. 
The SHAQ REVISED SCALES consist of 81 scales and subscales to reflect the complexity of key cognitive factors influencing happiness and success.  SHAQ’s main scales were reliable according to Cronbach alpha tests.  More than 3446 users completed most or all of SHAQ according to their personal choices.  All completed additional outcome scales and items.  Overall happiness, depression, anxiety, anger, health, relationship outcomes, highest personal income, academic achievement, and other factors were measured by outcome scales. 
The SHAQ scales had moderate to high positive correlations with almost all outcome measures.  SHAQ’s subscales had surprisingly high multiple correlations with the emotional outcomes; with Overall Happiness, R = .865, R Square = .749; with Low Depression, R = .730, R Square = .533; with Low Anxiety R = .675, R Square = .426; with Low Anger-Aggression,  R = .701, R Square = .491(N = 1123 for all analyses).  For the 224 subjects who completed all 70 subscales--including the academic scales, R = .897, R Square = .805 for Overall Happiness. I devised the Happiness Quotient (HQ) to get an overall predictor of happiness.  The HQ score is determined by a linear combination of 56 SHAQ scale/subscale scores. HQ was made analogous to IQ by having a mean = 100 and a standard deviation = 10. 
This SHAQ ADMINISTRATION MANUAL contains complete information and forms for administering, scoring, and minimally interpreting the SHAQ results.  It may be used by users and researchers to further understand the more specific, learned components of values, beliefs, and skills that are important in achieving happiness, success, and other positive well-being outcomes.

The  project-based  learning  approach  is  a  learning model  that  encourages  the  active  participation  of  gifted students,  supports  high-level  cognitive  activities,  requires  a  wide  range  of  tools  and  resources,  consider academic and social skills together and emphasizes the use of technology. technology. This study is based on the  learning  experiences  of  gifted  children  designed  with  project-based  approach.  The  study  employed  a holistic single-case embedded design, one of the qualitative research designs. The study group of the research consists  of  four  gifted  students  in  a  Science  and  Art  Center  in  the  South  Marmara  Region.  Criterion sampling,  one  of  the  purposeful  sampling  types,  was  used  to  determine  the  study  group.  Learning experiences  of  the  gifted  children through  project-based  learning  approach  were  determined  via  reflective journals.  The  data  in  the  reflective  journals  written  by  gifted  students  were  given  with  direct  quotations within the framework of the main theme and sub-themes, and inferences and interpretations were made. It was found out that gifted children have an advanced level reflective writing ability. It was also observed that participants grounded their projects with real-life problems and made inter-disciplinary connections in their reflections.  Besides,  bearing  the  character  traits  of  gifted  children,  the  participants  effectively  used  higher-level thinking skills ad cognitive strategies.

This is an updated summary of a previous paper, “‘Personal literacy’: the vital, yet often overlooked, graduate attribute”, considering the centrality of graduate attributes to employability, and especially the student's ability to critically self-reflect.

This study aimed at identifying the role of the project-based learning strategy in helping students at the College of Applied Studies and Community Service, Imam Abdul Rahman bin Faisal University gain some academic skills and developing students' and faculty members' attitudes towards it. Two questionnaires and one graded scale were used as tools of the current study to measure how much faculty members and students were satisfied with project-based learning and teaching and to evaluate project-based learning practices, and training materials included in the teacher's guide and students' book. The study sample included 87 students and 15 faculty members who participated in implementing this pedagogical strategy. The results of the study showed that both students and faculty members were satisfied with using the project-based learning strategy. There were also statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the pre-and post-evaluations in the graduated scale of the standards of project-based learning practice in favor of the post-application. It was concluded that project-based learning helped students gain the following academic skills: cooperation with members of their group, critical thinking, creative thinking, decision-making, and project management.

Günümüzde sadece ABD'de yılda 40 milyon kişi anksiyete rahatsızlığından muzdarip olmakta, her dört kişiden biri ise hayatının bir noktasında onunla mücadele etmektedir.

The Perfect Practice Exam: The Skill of Legal Analysis is the ideal study tool because it provides the most utility for the money spent.

The PPE includes 6 different subjects in one book and provides 8 questions for each subject.  This is total of 48 practice exams. Law students nationwide are usually required to take Civil Procedure, Constitutional Law, Contracts, Criminal Law, Real Property, and Torts. This book covers it all and eliminates the need for multiple practice-exam books.

Students can also comfortably use The PPE throughout the semester because the book strategically pairs commonly-tested topics and presents the topics in the order they often appear on the syllabus. Legal analysis is one of the most important skills in the legal profession and only improves through ample practice.  The PPE teaches students the skill, models the skill, and provides several essay questions for students to practice the skill. The PPE is a great resource because its focused learning objectives can help students reach mastery of legal analysis at a faster rate.

Performance of pupils in Oral Literature examinations in English Paper 2 has been below average in recent years. For instance, the 2016 KCSE examination student performance in English was poor across the country and Butere Sub County in particular. Therefore, this research sought to determine teachers' knowledge and skills in developing and utilizing audiovisual instructional resources in teaching and learning oral literature in selected public secondary schools. The respondents for the study involved principals and oral literature teachers who were selected through purposive and stratified random sampling technique. The research instruments used were questionnaires and interview guides. The result of the analysis showed that despite most teachers attaining the required academic qualification, they did not adequately improvise audiovisual instructional resources during teaching and learning of oral literature in public secondary schools in Butere Sub County, Kenya. Oral literature teachers did not involve students in improvising these resources and this could the underutilisation of audiovisual instructional resources in teaching and learning Oral Literature in secondary schools. The study recommends that principals in secondary need to ensure that OL is allocated time in the school timetable and also support teachers for further in-service training on audiovisual instructional media use in schools.

This is a short how-to article that I wrote recently about the basics of how to become a peer reviewer. Peer reviewing (or referring) is the process of taking an author's scholarly or scientific writing and research and showing it to others who are experts in the same field for their feedback. The reviewers make comments, point out weaknesses, and recommend (or not) that the article is published. The work may be accepted, accepted with revisions, or outright rejected.

This study aims to articulate the students' perception about cyber bullying, particularly on social media. Even though ICT technology provides a large number of benefits, particularly those who are young, as Campbell (2005) has pointed out that it has also a "dark side" (p. 68). Particularly after the intensive and extensive use of the social media, the impact of the cyberbullying has dramatically increased, but it is rarely discussed and prevented. Hence, in this study, the forty-five participants were selected from two different universities and by using phenomenological analysis (Moustakas, 1994), eight research questions were answered in the semi-structured interviews, which were approximately 45 minutes in length. By gathering theoriginal data were gathered from 'naive' descriptions the experiences related to cyber bullying were taken into account based on reflection and interpretation of the participant's different stories. The collected data were analyzed in Atlas.ti 6 in order to make depth study. Additionally, there were limitations in terms of selecting the participants since a few students wanted to share their personal experiences. As a result, the data showed that the students had inevitably affected by the cyber bullying in the social media in many ways. Among ali these students, the female students had been influenced to a greater degree comparing to male students. Most (96%) of the participants agreed that social relations had changed a lot and they had to have connections with their friends through the social media. The students— particularly females—viewed cyber bullying as a problem, but no one rarely discussed at the university. More importantly a large number (89%) felt loneliness and they did not know how to behave properly. Most (91%) students did not see any helpful resources when dealing with cyber bullying. Students (82%) were currently experiencing the majority of cyber bullying instances outside of the school day, but they had direct relationship with the events at the university. Students (84%) were not able to suggest some basic strategies in order to deal with cyber bullying. They (79%) agreed that they did not know how to respond to cyberbullying. Additionally, a large number of the (94%) participants agreed that the effects would be different on the elite environments comparing to the socially disadvantaged environments. They (96%) pointed out that the future of social media had been changing in terms of education and learning so that they did not have any chance to ignore the social media. Most (85%) of the participants clarified that the university social environment, centres and counselling offices would develop a better network and understanding in order to decrease cyber bullying. Most (88%) participants articulated that cyber bullying on the socail media would develop particuiar problems and would change the culture of social life. Most (81%) claim that social media are important not only for their social life but also for their Professional life so that they did not want to see their private photographs on the walls of their friends. These (61%) participants strongly pointed out that
privacy was remarkably important for the individuals but it was not controlled. Furthermore, most (92%) participants mentioned that the autonomy in the social media would make the individulas aggressive due to the fact that there was not any law and regulations to.

The importance of notetaking for English for academic purposes (EAP) students and teachers is growing due to a rapid increase in the number of universities offering English as a medium of instruction (EMI) courses around the world (e.g. [Teng, H. C. 2011. "Exploring Note-taking Strategies of EFL Listenerst." Procedia-Social and Behavioral Sciences 15: 480-484.]). While there have been several studies on second language (L2) notetaking that focus on the types and styles of notes students take (e.g. [Siegel, J. 2016. "A pedagogic cycle for EFL note-taking." ELT Journal 70 (3): 275-286]; [Crawford, M. 2015. "A Study on Note Taking in EFL Listening Instruction." JALT2014 Conference Proceedings, Tokyo, JALT, 416-424]; Tsai and Wu 2010), student perspectives regarding their stated beliefs about and reported habits related to notetaking remain in need of further exploration. This paper reports on an investigation of notetaking from EAP students' perspectives. It presents the results of a cross-cultural survey on the views and habits expressed by Japanese (n = 256) and Swedish (n = 272) students. Findings from the study demonstrate the similarities and differences between students in the two countries in relation to notetaking in EAP courses.

Disorganized students are often viewed as less capable students because of their inability to keep track of papers, remember things that schools or professionals deem important, or maintain a system of organization that has been imposed on them externally. Disorganized students are seen as failing before they even have the opportunity to perform—just look at a google search results for disorganized students. In this workshop we will plan for the success of disorganized students by leveraging their many strengths, not the least of which is creativity. Supported by evidence-based coaching literature, this presentation will discuss both strategies and outcomes for working with disorganized students. The coaching literature states that internal motivation and implementation will have the best results when it comes to making and maintaining productive habits. Coaching research also asserts that advice-giving and external forces implementing new strategies or systems for organization will result in poor outcomes (Wildflower and Brennan, 2011).  Therefore, this presentation will present working with disorganized students as an opportunity for creativity and thinking outside the paper planner. To encourage creative thinking and examine the many different priorities people have when creating systems of organization, we will do an activity wherein participants will try to determine whether various systems of organization are real (and used by people) or made up. To reinforce creative problem solving skills, participants will examine various different student personas and scenarios and discuss in small groups how to help each student build a new system of organization from the ground up. I will reframe student disorganization in a way that allows for positive strengths-focused approaches to academic support.

Many language students intend to list speaking ability as one of their main objectives of study, either because they would acquire some personal satisfaction from being able to speak a second language or because they feel it would be beneficial in chasing other interests or career goals. That is, the oral proficiency is considered as significant asset which really valuable in advance.

This research was funded by, and implemented within, a UK national research organisation, while the author was the KE and Impact Evaluation Manager responsible for assessing impact on a £15m UK government-funded research programme.

This work was also submitted as the authors MBA dissertation which was accepted and awarded in 2009.

ABSTRACT: A methodology and methods ‘toolbox’ is proposed for conducting impact research and assessment from within research programmes. The emphasis is upon how to clarify and assess the wider impacts from the early stages onwards.

The approach explicitly acknowledges, and attempts to address, the known issues and challenges of impact assessment while drawing upon the resources and opportunities available to research managers and researchers within such programmes.

The study has two triangulating foundations. Firstly, it examines the academic literature to help identify and design the pilot methodology and methods. Secondly it trials these in a real programme to both test and improve them.

The study was conducted over one year within one leading UK research organisation, where two research programmes (and around 60 research projects of £15m total value) were being assessed for their impacts. The study draws upon actual impact management experience and reflection, prospective (ex ante) and retrospective (ex post) assessments, participatory contributions from leading researchers undergoing assessment, and consultation with external users. The findings of this study outline the pilot and its first iteration. Recommendations are made for improvement to the methodology and methods.

A subsequent follow-on bid to UK government incorporating the impacts identified from implementing this methodology, successfully led to a further £15m of government funding.

It is expected the pilot methodology and methods will be applicable to other organisations, conducting and funding such research programmes, required to research and assess the wider research impacts.

Although primary focus of implemetation trials was upon research in physical sciences, technology, high-tech engineering, computing/IT, and environment, the wider literature study, the methodology design and justification, the methods proposed and used, and the resulting general recommendations and lessons are expected to apply more broadly to many other research areas, where the impact is to be found more widely in the society, economy, government or public sector or within organizations, policies, professions or the public.

Interest in this work is expected from research programme managers, impact managers and assessors, management consultants advising in this area, and government funding managers, all seeking to embed a developing approach to understand, capture, and enhance wider impact.

It is the author’s intention to write this short reflection paper in order to raise awareness among prospective Chinese students planning to study a Master degree in English speaking countries. Entering a different learning environment with demanding requirements and a foreign culture at the same time is a challenge. Often students can only adapt after a period of “culture shock” and by that time their courses are over.

Twenty-first-century libraries are evolving their focus and expanding their reach, and academic libraries are no exception. In 2015, Student Learning Services, previously the University Learning Centre, joined the University of Saskatchewan’s University Library, thereby expanding the Library’s mandate and offerings to include a broader range of academic support and skill development and experiential learning opportunities for students. In this discussion, we will discuss our integration process and how we have begun to reimagine a more integrated and holistic approach for student academic skill development.

Apart from John Dewey, no American educational reformer has been as internationally successful and influential as Helen Parkhurst, the founder of Dalton education. In the twenties and thirties of the twentieth century, Dalton education was spread throughout the world. There was Dalton education in America, England, Germany, the Netherlands, the Soviet Union, India, China and Japan. Particularly in the Netherlands and Japan, Dalton education has remained in existence. In recent years there has been a revival of international interest. It crops up again, for instance, in England, Germany, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, Poland and China.

The Netherlands is the country with the highest density of Dalton schools. At the moment there are four hundred, three hundred and seventy of which are elementary schools. Comprising five percent of all elementary schools, Dalton education is by far the largest educational reform movement in the Netherlands. And, contrary to Montessori, Jena Plan and Waldorf education, it is steadily on the increase: approximately one hundred schools have been founded in the past five years. The only Dalton school in America, is the school that Helen Parkhurst founded herself in 1919, and which she was subsequently to direct for more than twenty years: the Dalton School in New York. It is a renowned school. But its fame is not due to its origins as an experiment in progressive education. The Dalton School is the second most expensive private school in New York.

We begin with an account of the original practice and theory of the Dalton Plan. The first chapter is mostly historical: a concise reconstruction of the history of the development of the Dalton Plan. The second chapter characterizes the theory of the Dalton Plan based upon our interpretation of texts written by Parkhurst.

Background: European and national policies on citizenship education stimulate the implementation of a participative approach to citizenship education, fostering active citizenship. The reason given for fostering active citizenship is the decline of participation in political and social life jeopardizing democracy. Schools have to implement a participative approach through stimulating participation within school and its direct environment, while fostering a certain kind of political literacy, critical thinking and analysing skills, certain kind of values, attitudes and behaviours. Purpose: The purpose of this article is to problematise the participative approach of citizenship education advocated by policy makers and several researchers. In order to do so, four different categories that citizenship education has to cover will be theoretically and empirically analysed: political knowledge, critical thinking, values, attitudes and behaviours, and active participation. The practical implications for educational practice will be discussed.
Source of evidence: Two types of documents have been analysed: The 2005 and 2012 Eurydice reports and the 2009 International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) research reports. These documents are exemplary of the mainstream idea of citizenship and citizenship education held by policy makers and many researchers on citizenship education. The Eurydice reports have analysed citizenship education in more than 30 countries while promoting a certain concept of citizenship education, namely active citizenship. The ICCS has researched pupils’ competencies on citizenship education and school practices in 38 countries. It is an interesting source because it had to define and operationalise the different constituents of citizenship education.
Main argument: In jurisdictions where citizenship education is compulsory, schools have to implement this participative approach and account for it. We suggest that this educational approach to citizenship education may be problematic because each aspect – political literacy, critical thinking and analysing skills, values, attitudes and behaviours, and active participation – presents challenging demands on the curricu- lum, head teachers and teachers. We argue three kinds of constraints that make the implementation of such a participative approach unrealistic: (1) insufficient specialist knowledge on the part of teachers and head teachers, (2) time and budget constraints and (3) an overcrowded curriculum. We demonstrate that the broad range of themes that political literacy has to cover demand specific knowledge on the part of teachers regarding each of the themes. Then we argue that critical thinking skills are hard to learn and demand continuous practice. Implementing and sustaining active participation structure within school and in the direct environment, again, require specific skills and curricular organisation. The demands made by values, attitudes and behaviours on teachers and pupils could not be explored because of the lack of conceptual clarity in the documentation under scrutiny.
Conclusion: The feasibility of a participative approach to citizenship education has been questioned through theoretical and empirical critical analysis. On this basis, we suggest that the scope of the citizenship education curriculum should be reconsidered or that teacher and head teacher should receive the necessary and adequate training, and support to implement such a participatory structure.

Представлена типология стратегий академического чтения, даны их краткие описания и контекст на примере зарубежной исследовательской литературы.

ACADEMIC READING IN THE HUMANITIES

The problem of academic skills (i.e. the complex, which includes academic writing, academic reading, academic performance, academic skills, etc.) is increasingly becoming the subject of both teaching and research. Importance of academic reading among the academic skills is fundamental and requires careful study.
My article is a brief sketch on problem statement in humanitarian academic reading strategies and their classification that are subjects of my research. For these goals, I use general philosophical and logical methods. As the result, I represent a typology of strategies for academic reading. Thus, for the purposes of academic reading, we can speak about six strategies:
(i) Ultra-fast, or exploratory reading, which is a kind of viewing the literature ‘on the diagonal’, in the case of reading electronic sources, often with a keyword search. This strategy is used when we need to find a specific location in the book (maybe even page), which is required for the purposes of research;
(ii) Rapid (recapitulative) reading, which is used for detecting desired location in the text; such fragment of the text is immediately written out (copied) with simultaneous indication of the bibliographic information;
(iii) Slow (deep, or absorbed) reading, which always marked reading philosophical and (or) religious literature. More complex format of slow reading is reading with (critical) analysis;
(iv) Contextual reading, or reading, when the reader moves freely from one strategy to another, because he is good at the context. This kind of reading is characteristic for those authors who for many years seriously read to read themselves into their research issues. This kind of reading is possible as an analytical one;
(v) Reviewing reading, i.e., strategy for the reading diploma, dissertations, research papers and monographs for their review;
when using this strategy the reader pays attention mainly on the shortcomings of the text;
(v) Supportive (competence-based) reading, at which we read scientific literature to be informed in recent developments in science, or to improve our competence in it.
My conclusion is the cardinal obstacle to development of academic writing skills are (i) a lack of understanding of both the need to reading large amounts of text and development of relevant literature search techniques, and (ii) application of the wrong strategies of reading scientific literature.

This paper presents a research-based model for helping students identify opportunities for taking control of and responsibility for their own learning, developed through one-to-one skills tutorials with students across a range of subjects and year groups. Although interventions must ultimately accommodate the needs of the individual, they can be broadly characterised so that certain strategies will be more effective than others according to confidence level and purpose of visit. For students low in confidence coming to check their work is correct, having a practical checklist to follow connects to their concerns for task diligence. For more confident students, rehearsal and discussion are central to their self-improvement. Where the purpose of the tutorial is more questioning, low confidence students would benefit from goal-setting and planning, to structure progress and break down tasks, whereas more confident students are likely to appreciate learning for its own sake and so guidance on placing each task in context will be useful for them. By helping students take control of their learning, their motivation and engagement are likely to increase, giving them a more positive learning experience and potentially improving their academic outcomes.

In the process of completing the PhD the candidate becomes an expert in their field. Through publishing as that work is completed they become a known expert. This paper will explore the process of publishing the thesis as it is written. In reviewing the literature, in re-interpreting past findings, in the research conducted or ideas explored the candidate is contributing to their field of study. These contributions are worthy of peer review and publication. Through doing so the candidate receives not only acknowledgment but also invaluable writing guidance and advice, which will help their final submission achieve a high standard of quality.  "
