Se presentan los resultados del plan de medios sociales de la Plataforma Latina de Revistas de Comunicación (PlatCom) integrada por 8 revistas académicas fundacionales y dos revistas honoríficas consorciadas. El estudio refleja la actividad desplegada en los últimos cinco años (2013-2017). El objetivo es describir la estrategia llevada a cabo en las redes sociales para difundir los artículos académicos y las actividades de PlatCom, así como cuantificar y valorar la interactividad generada y su contribución en los procesos de visibilidad científica. La singularidad de la incitativa reside en la gestión de carácter conjunto y mancomunado realizada para varias revistas de forma simultánea. Se realiza un estudio exploratorio descriptivo comparativo e interanual. El procedimiento consideró la recopilación anual de datos cuantitativos sobre las mismas variables para habilitar la comparación y facilitar la identificación de tendencias o posibles mejoras a realizar.  Para ello, se utilizaron los datos extraídos mediante Google Analytics en los medios propios de PlatCom: el blog, dos redes sociales de carácter generalista (Facebook y Twitter) y dos redes sociales de ámbito académico (Academia.edu y Mendeley). En este periodo, las redes sociales y el blog fueron gestionadas a diario por una profesional especialista en Social Media. Las variables consideradas han sido: las visualizaciones o visitas, las descargas y el número de seguidores.  La conclusión principal del estudio revela que las redes sociales y el blog son muy útiles a la hora de difundir los artículos académicos. Academia.edu obtiene los mejores resultados como red social para artículos académicos. Facebook y Twitter exigen un tipo de comunicación más distendida en el diseño de los mensajes. Como acción futura se sugiere incorporar Social Ads como herramienta de segmentación precisa para llegar al público objetivo que nosotros deseamos y estudiar la relación entre métricas alternativas y citación del artículo.

In the last decade there has been an emergence of Academic Social Networking Sites (ASNSs). Each site offers its own combination of tools and capabilities to support research activities, communication, collaboration, and networking. Given their variety, it might be challenging for academics to evaluate and use them. We conducted an exploratory inductive comparative study of the services and tools of a select set of ASNSs. We argue that maintaining multiple profiles might be time-consuming and propose starting a discussion about how we can make this process less cumbersome. We expect that our findings will help academics and researchers make informed decisions about their choice of ASNS.

The main focus of this paper is to compare and investigate the different functions of Zotero and Mendeley. Both the software's are getting popular among research and academic community. Little detailed information is known about who reads research articles and the contexts in which research articles are read. Using data about people who register in Mendeley as readers of articles, this paper explores different types of users of Clinical Medicine, Engineering and Technology, Social Science, Physics and Chemistry papers inside and outside academia. The majority of readers for all disciplines were PhD students, postgraduates and postdocs but other types of academics were also represented. In addition, many Clinical Medicine papers were read by medical professionals. The highest correlations between citations and Mendeley readership counts were found for types of users that often authored academic papers, except for associate professors in some sub-disciplines. This suggests that Mendeley readership can reflect usage similar to traditional citation impact, if the data is restricted to readers who are also authors, without the delay of impact measured by citation counts. At the same time, Mendeley statistics can also reveal the hidden impact of some research papers, such as educational value for non-author users inside academia or the impact of research papers on practice for readers outside academia.

Por temas académicos se es imprescindible hacer una redacción más rápida en cuanto la citas y referencias de APA, si bien es cierto la función existe en Word, pues esta se desactualiza de manera continua, es aquí donde los gestores bibliográficos recopilan varias citas y referencias de manera integral y eficiente, para el caso de Mendeley es necesario tan solo breves pasos para realizarlo, atado incluso al navegador web, a una base de datos interna y la importación web según su búsqueda. There are a variety of platforms that are attempting to become the online faculty lounge where academics can gather to share or crowdsource their research. Along with online profile tools, these sites help to increase your visibility to other academics and also to other people in society who may be interested in your research.  This can result in collaboration with other researchers, increased access to your research work, and increased engagement with the general public, providing benefits to yourself and your academic institution.  The sites enable new reputation metrics  (e.g. inbound citation, readership, follower counts), which may eventually give academics an alternative to the academic journal industry as a means of measuring scholarly impact.

The COVID-19 pandemic requires a fast response from researchers to help address biological, medical and public health issues to minimize its impact. In this rapidly evolving context, scholars, professionals and the public may need to quickly identify important new studies. In response, this paper assesses the coverage of scholarly databases and impact indicators during 21 March to 18 April 2020. The results confirm a rapid increase in the volume of research, which particularly accessible through Google Scholar and Dimensions, and less through Scopus, the Web of Science, PubMed. A few COVID-19 papers from the 21,395 in Dimensions were already highly cited, with substantial news and social media attention. For this topic, in contrast to previous studies, there seems to be a high degree of convergence between articles shared in the social web and citation counts, at least in the short term. In particular, articles that are extensively tweeted on the day first indexed are likely to be highly read and relatively highly cited three weeks later. Researchers needing wide scope literature searches (rather than health focused PubMed or medRxiv searches) should start with Google Scholar or Dimensions and can use tweet and Mendeley reader counts as indicators of likely importance.

"African scholarly research is relatively invisible globally because, even though research production on the continent is growing in absolute terms, it is falling in comparative terms. In addition, traditional metrics of visibility, such as the Impact Factor, fail to make legible all African scholarly production. And many African universities also do not take a strategic approach to scholarly communication to broaden the reach of their scholars’ work.

To address this challenge, the Scholarly Communication in Africa Programme (SCAP) was established to help raise the visibility of African scholarship by mapping current research and communication practices in Southern African universities and by recommending and piloting technical and administrative innovations based on open access dissemination principles. To do this, SCAP conducted extensive research in four faculties at the Universities of Botswana, Cape Town, Mauritius and Namibia.

In the University of Mauritius Faculty of Science, SCAP found that scholars:
• carry heavy teaching and administrative loads which hinder their research productivity
• feel positive about the merits of open access communication, but neither they nor the university has an OA dissemination strategy that would capitalize on this sentiment
• find it easier to collaborate with scholars in the global North than in the rest of Africa
• rarely communicate their research with government
• tend to engage in small, locally-based research projects that are either unfunded or funded by the university
• do not utilize social media technologies to disseminate their work or seek new collaborative opportunities.

All of these factors impact UoM’s research in/visibility at a time when scholarly communication is going through dramatic technical, legal, social and ethical changes.

“Scholarly Communication at the University of Mauritius” shares the results of SCAP’s research and advocacy efforts at UoM’s Faculty of Science. It not only analyses the faculty’s scholarly communication ecosystem, but illuminates the opportunities available for raising the visibility of its scholarship. It concludes with a series of recommendations that would enhance the communicative and developmental potential of the university’s research as a whole.

This study will be of interest for scholars of African higher education, academically linked civil society organizations, educationally affiliated government personnel and university researchers and managers."

The prospects of altmetrics are especially encouraging for research fields in the humanities that currently are difficult to study using established bibliometric methods. Yet, little is known about the altmetric impact of research fields in the humanities. Consequently, this paper analyses the altmetric coverage and impact of humanities-oriented articles and books published by Swedish universities during 2012. Some of the most common altmetric sources are examined using a sample of 310 journal articles and 54 books. Mendeley has the highest coverage of journal articles (61 %) followed by Twitter (21 %) while very few of the publications are mentioned in blogs or on Facebook. Books, on the other hand, are quite often tweeted while both Mendeley’s and the novel data source Library Thing’s coverage is low. Many of the problems of applying bibliometrics to the humanities are also relevant for altmetric approaches; the importance of non-journal publications, the reliance on print as well the limited coverage of non-English language publications. However, the continuing development and diversification of methods suggests that altmetrics could evolve into a valuable tool for assessing research in the humanities.

As a result of repeated mistakes in bibliographic references, scientists are interested in reference managers. Currently, there are only few studies which concentrate on the quality evaluation of the bibliographic references generated by these applications. In this research, bibliographic references of online and printed articles, books, contributions to books and web resources generated from the Citace PRO, EndNote, Mendeley, RefWorks and Zotero reference managers with briefly made references according to the citation styles ACS, APA, ASA, ČSN ISO 690, JAMA, MLA and NLM were compared. During the comparison, it was found that no reference manager is able to generate all references in the correct way. The best results were detected in Mendeley which had the total fewest number of mistakes and the fewest number of mistakes for 3 citation styles and in Zotero which had the second total least number of mistakes and the total fewest number of mistakes for 4 citation styles. On the other hand, Citace PRO revealed the most mistakes for 5 citations style, EndNote for 2 citation styles and RefWorks for 1 citation style. All reference managers had problems with generating various data in bibliographic references. It was found that several mistakes were caused by the technical restrictions of the reference managers while other mistakes were caused by the wrong setting of the citation formats. With respect to similar functions of the tested reference managers and the number of mistakes in generated references, Zotero and Mendeley proved to be the most suitable managers.

В статье рассматриваются возможности современных персональных баз знаний и сервисов, предоставляющих возможности организации научной информации. На примерах таких программ-сервисов, как Zotero, Mendeley и Evernote, предлагается оценить возможности и ограничения построения персональных баз знаний, понимания под базами знаний системно организованное хранение неструктурированной информации, предоставляющее возможности поиска и использования информации.

Concoctions of roots of Cnestis ferruginea and Citrus limon are used locally in the treatment of breast cancer, wounds, dysentery and tooth ache. In this study, methanol root extracts of Cnestis ferruginea and ethanol root extracts of Citrus limon were evaluated for antimicrobial, and antioxidant capacities. Preliminary phytochemical screening of the extracts was performed using standard methods. The agar well diffusion method was used to determine the antimicrobial activities of the extract against test organisms Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtillus, Salmonella typhi, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans. In addition, the minimum inhibitory concentration of extracts was evaluated using broth dilution method. The antioxidant activity was determined by total antioxidant capacity and DPPH free radical scavenging assay. FTIR analysis were conducted on a component of each extracts. Mendeley is a free, web-based tool for organizing research citations and annotating their accompanying PDF articles. Adapting Web 2.0 principles for academic scholarship, Mendeley integrates the management of the research articles with features for collaborating with researchers locally and worldwide. In this article the features of Mendeley are discussed and critiqued in comparison to other, similar tools. These features include citation management, online synchronization and collaboration, PDF management and annotation, and integration with word processing software. The article concludes with a discussion of how a social networking tool such as Mendeley might impact the academic scholarship process.

Although library holding data is constructed upon work format of books, it is less known how much print and electronic books in libraries contribute to the library holding counts. In response, this research is an attempt to explore the distribution of library holding data across work formats and investigate the availability of library print holdings and library electronic holdings for books as constituents of the library holding metric across fields and over time and compared with other book metrics. ISBNs, titles and author names of 119,794 Scopus-indexed book titles across 26 fields were examined for fourteen variables including OCLC Library Holdings, Scopus Citations, Google Books Citations, Goodreads engagements, and Altmetric indicators. Mendeley reader count is good evidence of the early impact of scientific output since it appears before citations. This paper aims to scope and compare Mendeley readers of Library and Information Science (LIS) articles published from India and China. Mendeley readership data for the highly cited 1,000 articles in Web of Science are extracted using Webometric Analyst for both countries and are analysed using Excel and SPSS. The findings reveal that LIS articles that are published from China got more readers as compared to LIS articles published from India with an excess of 97 readers per paper on Mendeley. The occupational status of readers tells that PhD students are the top readers for both the countries' publications, followed by masters students. Discipline-wise readership shows that readers were spread across 29 different fields, with the highest readers from business, management and accounting, followed by computer science for both countries' publications. Location-wise readership depicts that the top engaged readers are from the United States for both the countries' publications. Finally, the study reports a positive association between citations and Mendeley bookmarks, justifying that Mendeley readership can be used to measure the early research impact of LIS scholarship in both countries.

Altmetrics have been used as a complementary or alternative to traditional citation metrics, offering alternative ways to measure societal impact and public engagement with scientific publications. Conceivably, journal articles are first read by stakeholders in different social referencing platforms like Mendeley then those are used as a citable
document for future work. Thus, the readership of scientific journals is an informative indicator for different stakeholders involved in scholarly practice. The purpose of this paper is to examine the readership patterns and characteristics of PLOS journals. This article compares Scopus citation counts and Mendeley readership counts for the articles of seven PLOS journals that were published in 2017. The Mendeley API in Webometric Analyts software was used to obtain Mendeley readership data. The result shows that Scopus citations are positively and strongly
correlated with readership counts in Mendeley for all investigated journals. Most of the readers are Ph.D. students and master’s students. The USA has registered as the highest number of readers counting PLOS journals. We observed that PLOS articles tend to attract more readers than citations. Therefore, the result suggests that readership data should be accepted as an impact indicator for all PLOS journals.

Changes are occurring in scholarly communication as scientific discourse and research activities spread across various social media platforms. In this paper, we study altmetrics on the article and journal levels, investigating whether the online attention received by research articles is related to scholarly impact or may be due to other factors. We define a new metric, Journal Social Impact (JSI), based on eleven data sources: CiteULike, Mendeley, F1000, blogs, Twitter, Facebook, mainstream news outlets, Google Plus, Pinterest, Reddit, and sites running Stack Exchange (Q&A). We compare JSI against diverse citation-based metrics, and find that JSI significantly correlates with a number of them. These findings indicate that online attention of scholarly articles is related to traditional journal rankings and favors journals with a longer history of scholarly impact. We also find that journal-level altmetrics have strong significant correlations among themselves, compared with the weak correlations among article-level altmetrics. Another finding is that Mendeley and Twitter have the highest usage and coverage of scholarly activities. Among individual altmetrics, we find that the readership of academic social networks have the highest correlations with citation-based metrics. Our findings deepen the overall understanding of altmetrics and can assist in validating them.

User review is a significant component of mobile app markets such as the Google Play Store, App Store, Microsoft Store and others. Users submit their reviews for downloaded apps on these sites in the form of star ratings and text reviews. Apps can contain huge volumes of feedback, making it difficult for the user and the developer to skim through thousands of such reviews to get an insight into usage and impact of such apps. Thus, the current study aims to assess the usage and satisfaction among users of the Mendeley's Android app vs iOS app.The analytics are performed by using Appbot analytics software which captured, monitored, measured and analyzed the review results for a particular period. Appbot provides easy-tounderstand insights of an app using artificial intelligence algorithm tools.The findings of the study reveal strong inclination, adoption and usage of Mendeley's Android app compared to that of iOS among users.The value of this research is in getting an insight of the pattern/behavior of users towards using apps on different platforms (Android vs iOS) and provides valuable results for the app developers in monitoring usage and enhancing features for the satisfaction of users. Without mobile app analytics, one will be blindly trying out different things without any evidence to back up their experiments.

Mendeley is a citation management tool and widely used by academics, educators and librarians around the world. It gives early impact data in relation to an individual academic's work, rather than citation data. The study reported in this paper aimed to investigate and characterize the presence of DESIDOC Journal of Library & Information Technology articles in Mendeley. Data were exported from Mendeley using Webometric Analyst software. A total 391 articles were found with total 6132 readership count.The results show that student and librarian groups are primary readers of the publications as compared to faculty, researchers, and other reader groups. There is a 0.3217 correlation between Scopus citations with Mendeley readers. It was also noted that all the 391 articles has at least one reader.

Jurnal merupakan salah satu produk tulisan ilmiah yang tidak pernah terlepas dari aktivitas pengutipan, termasuk aktivitas penyusunan daftar pustaka. Permasalahan yang ada saat ini adalah masih banyak orang yang belum memahami cara pengutipan dan penulisan referensi APA style dengan menggunakan aplikasi Mendeley. Atas dasar tersebut, kami melaksanakan kegiatan pelatihan ini untuk mereka yang memiliki kendala penulisan referensi APA style dan penggunaan aplikasi Mendeley.
