Acosmism

Hassidism hardly took root in Germany or anywhere else in Western Europe until the late twentieth century.  Still, the main ideas of Hasidism were presented lucidly to the German public – both Jewish and Gentile – already in 1792, through Salomon Maimon’s Lebensgeschichte. Maimon dedicates a chapter and a half of his autobiography to the description and analysis of the new Hassidic movement.  The report of his visit to the court of R.  Dov Ber of Mezerich, the prominent leader of the emerging movement at the time, is probably the most important external testimony we have about the emergence of Hasidism. Maimon’s closeness to the events and his first-hand encounter with central figures of the movement make his testimony highly valuable; at the same time, this very closeness precluded Maimon’s capturing the wider historical significance of the events he witnessed.
True to the ideals of his philosophical heroes, Maimonides and Spinoza, Maimon considered knowledge to be man’s summum bonum.  Yet, through a historical irony, Maimon was hardly aware of his role in the formation of two almost contemporaneous movements: Hassidism, on the one hand, and German Idealism, on the other. The two intellectual movements were worlds apart, and if not for Maimon’s participation in both, we would probably say that they had nothing in common. But Maimon’s co-presence in both movements yielded a crucial commonality: the notion of acosmism. That all particularity was truly a manifestation of the infinity of God—and thus the distinct reality of particularity an illusion—was one of the most striking teachings of Hasidism. As I will soon show, Maimon was already fascinated by this teaching when he visited the court of the Maggid around 1770. Twenty years later, he would coin the term ‘acosmism’ to describe the philosophy of Spinoza.  The young Hegel, who was an avid reader of K.P. Moritz’s Magazin zur Erfahrungsseelekunde,  where various chapters of Maimon’s Lebensgeschichte first appeared, would adopt from Maimon the view of Spinozism as a system diametrically opposed to atheism, or as a philosophy of “acosmism,” the view that only God, but not the world of finite things, truly exists.
In the first part of this paper I will study Maimon’s description of the emerging Hassidic movement. For the most part, Maimon’s observations are typically penetrating and precise. Indeed, recent scholarly research on the teachings of the Maggid has been very successful in documenting various teachings quoted by Maimon in the writings of the Maggid and his immediate disciples.  But even Maimon’s errors - such as his announcement (in 1792) that the opposition to Hassidism by the old Rabbinic establishment was able to eradicate the movement – are highly informative and significant. Our study of Maimon’s testimony will focus mostly on his reconstruction of the Hassidic teaching of the annihilation of the ‘I’ and its complete submersion in the infinity of God. In the second part of my paper, I will focus on Maimon’s critique of Hassidism and his claim that while the doctrine of self-submersion in God is essentially right, the Hassidic masters and their disciples failed to pursue their deep insight in the proper manner due to their lack of knowledge of nature and philosophy. I will then point out the commonalities Maimon alludes to between the early teachings of Hassidism and the philosophy of Spinoza.

Kosmos und Subjektivität – dieses Begriffspaar stellt sogleich einen Antagonismus vor, denn Subjektivität konstituiert sich alleine im irreduziblen Bruch mit der kosmischen Einheit. Gegen Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts kommt es zu diesem Bruch, der sich durch ein Ineinanderwirken von wissenschaftlichen, philosophischen und ästhetischen Diskursen auszeichnet. Als entscheidender Schritt dieser Entwicklung, so die These der Untersuchung, lässt sich die Frühromantik verstehen: Sie insistiert zum einen auf dem Bruch mit der tradierten Vorstellung des Kosmos und entdeckt darin die Möglichkeitsbedingung moderner Subjektivität. Zum anderen hat sie die Erfahrung einer solchen Destruktion noch zur Voraussetzung ihrer eigenen Poetik.

In this paper, I address the problem of generation and destruction in Spinoza’s philosophical system. I approach this problem by providing an account of how Spinoza can maintain that contrary finite modes cannot inhere in the same substance, while substance itself does not change. One must distinguish between the formal essence of a mode and the existence of a mode and how these two entities are “in” substance. Formal essences are eternal and are in substance in a Platonic sense, while existent modes are temporal and are in substance insofar as they are parts of the whole of nature, or facies totius universi (face of the universe). Furthermore, the former are modes understood as pure relations, while the latter are modes understood as finite individuals. Formal essences are relations that specify how finite individuals will behave once they come into existence, while existent modes are individuals that express the relations defined by formal essences, as forces that possess a capacity to act and to be acted upon. According to these distinctions, I maintain that it is possible to develop a coherent account of contrariety and, consequently, of generation and destruction in Spinoza’s system.

Der Zusammenhang von Leben, Form und Roman ist in den vergangenen Jahren Gegenstand ausgiebiger Diskussionen in der Forschung gewesen.  Dabei ist auf die eigenwillige Verschränkung von Lebensform und der Poetik des Romans verwiesen und hierbei ein spannungsvolles Verhältnis herausgestellt worden.  Aufbauend auf diese Diskussion, jedoch mit einer anderen Stoßrichtung, geht es dem Beitrag darum, einen hiervon abweichenden Aspekt ans Licht der Reflexion zu heben. Romanform und Lebensform, so die Ausgangsüberlegung, sind nicht alleine in einem sich wechselseitig ausbildenden Verhältnis zu denken, sondern, so lässt sich gerade im Hinblick auf die Ausführungen in der 'Theorie des Romans' von Georg Lukács ergänzen und korrigieren, es muss hier eine wesentliche und bislang in der Diskussion unbeachtete Differenz geltend gemacht werden.Dafür muss jedoch von einem ontologisch gewendeten Begriff des Lebens Abschied genommen und ein abseitiger und bisweilen nicht anerkannter Aspekt des Lebens in Anschlag gebracht werden. Dies ist der inhärente Gegenpart oder eher noch untote Gegenspieler des Lebens selbst – nämlich der Todestrieb.

Das Verhältnis der deutschen Romantik zur Natur wird landläufig zumeist unter den Vorzeichen einer naiven Einheitsvorstellung und der träumerischen Sehnsucht hin zum Unbestimmten verhandelt. Wenn diese Sichtweise auf die Romantik sicher auch ihre Berechtigung hat, unterschlägt sie dennoch einen gewichtigen Aspekt insbesondere der Frühromantik, die sich hierin zudem scharf von den späteren romantischen Entwürfen absetzt. Denn die Naturphilosophie der Romantik ist nicht nur durch eine vermittelte Identitätsvorstellung gekennzeichnet, sondern in der Frühphase auch durch einen Negativismus, der zugleich eine wenig beachtete Kehrseite ihres Denkens ausmacht. Eine solche Haltung ist derweil nicht nur beiläufiger Effekt, sondern vielmehr konstitutiv für das philosophische Modell der Romantik und wirkt sich ebenfalls auf ihr Verständnis des Lebens aus, wie am Beispiel Friedrich Schlegels im Folgenden gezeigt werden soll. Die spezifische Haltung der Frühromantik zu Natur und Leben kann derweil als ein Akosmismus beschrieben werden, womit zugleich ein Terminus aufgerufen ist, der in der Zeit bereits in der philosophischen Diskussion kursiert.

El artículo propone un análisis comparativo centrado en el problema de la huida del mundo tal y como aparece en la obra de los autores que integran el canon clásico de la teoría sociológica. El trayecto comienza con una discusión de la perspectiva weberiana sobre los motivos y direcciones del rechazo religioso del mundo. En segundo lugar, se consideran las críticas que Karl Marx y Friedrich Engels dirigieron contra el romanticismo y el utopismo. En tercer término, la exposición rastrea los planteos de Émile Durkheim acerca del abandono del mundo.
A partir de la compulsa entre las teorías consideradas, se presenta un balance que discrimina tres ejes para la comprensión analítica de la huida: su significado en el marco de los conflictos de la modernidad, su diferencia con la revolución y los modos en que convoca la tríada comunidad-individuo-sociedad.

Resumen: El propósito de este artículo es ofrecer una reconstrucción interpretada de la principal empresa teórico-política de Étienne Tassin (1958-2018), su teoría de la cosmopolítica, como una filosofía política del presente. Para ello, analizamos sus principales producciones y las intervenciones públicas que realizó en los últimos años en torno de la crítica situación de los migrantes en la zona de Pas-de-Calais en Francia. Nuestro argumento seguirá tres pasos: en primer lugar, restituiremos el diagnóstico de época que realiza el autor ("Analítica del acosmismo"); luego, expondremos el desarrollo teórico que ofrece como respuesta al diagnóstico ("Tipología del cosmopolitismo"); y, finalmente, propondremos echar luz acerca del horizonte de acción hacia el cual proyecta su filosofía política del presente ("Un filósofo en la jungla: la paradoja de Étienne Tassin"). Abstract: The aim of this article is to offer an interpreted reconstruction of the main political-theoretical undertaking of Étienne Tassin (1958-2018), his theory of cosmopolitics, as a political philosophy of the present. For this, we shall analyze his main productions as well as the public interventions he has upheld in recent years on the critical situation of migrants in Pas-de-Calais, France. Our argument will follow three steps: first, we will restore the author's diagnosis of our age ("Analytic of wordlessness"); second, we will expose the theoretical development he offers as a response to that diagnosis ("Typology of cosmopolitism"); and third, we will intend to shed light on the horizon of action towards which he projected his political philosophy of the present ("A philosopher in the jungle: Étienne Tassin's paradox").

La politique, chez Arendt, est à la fois le lieu d’un lien et d’un écart. Elle est ce qui réunit les hommes lorsqu’ils nouent entre eux des rapports normés, tout en les maintenant éloignés, en préservant la pluralité qui nourrit les relations humaines : si l’acosmisme est ce qui caractérise les peuples privés de toute confronta­tion à l’altérité, alors la politique doit permettre d’ins­taurer un espace commun qui ne soit pas négateur des différences. Mais les exemples de l’Antiquité grecque et romaine ne permettent pas de vérifier la pos­sibilité d’un tel lieu paradoxal. Au con­traire, la poli­tique comme monde commun semble toujours con­tenir une part de répression de l’altérité qui trouve son ex­pres­sion ultime dans le tota­litarisme. Entre anomie et uni­formité, l’espace de la politique est ins­table et fragile. De même, peut-être, que la démocratie, seul ré­gime susceptible de s’installer durablement dans cet espace.

What happens when you assume that the world is a dream in the mind of God, or that the world's history is a story that God is spinning? Focusing on the role that this assumption plays in the thought of Rabbi Mordechai Yosef Leiner (1801–1854), at least as it is understood by Rabbi Herzl Hefter, I argue that this assumption generates interesting solutions to old riddles in the philosophy of religion and interesting insights into the nature of religious language.
