Agean Sea Problems

The Eastern Aegean Islands are demilitarized under Article 13 of the Lausanne Peace Treaty. Pursuant to said Article, Greece cannot have naval base and establish fortifications in the islands.
No international document has provided Greece the right to militarize the islands in question. Besides that except for the circumstances stated in the United Nations Charter, the principle of self-defense cannot be arbitrarily evoked. As for the Aegean Army of Turkey, it should be underlined that contrary to the status of the Eastern Aegean Islands, the Turkish territories of the Aegean region are not under any demilitarized status.
The demilitarization provisions are essential to the accomplishment of the purpose of the 1923 Lausanne Peace Treaty. It is worthwhile to remember how İsmet Pasha as head of the Turkish Delegation explained the Turkish views on 25 November 1922 in the Territorial and Military Commission of the Lausanne Conference regarding the sovereignty and demilitarization of the said islands. He said in this respect that “The Aegean islands, which depended geographically on Asia Minor, were of great importance for the peace and security of Anatolia.”
It should be kept in mind that there is a direct linkage between the possession of sovereignty over those islands and their demilitarized status. Demilitarization is the essential precondition of Greek sovereignty over these islands. It can be emphasized that demilitarization clauses are sine quo non for the Aegean status quo. Trying to replace this status quo with faits accomplis is equivalent to opening Pandora’s Box which is to be carefully avoided.

Turkish-Greek relations have a historical background which has positive and negative dimensions. Discussing negative aspects, would not give any constructive result to solve our problems and to look ahead. As we all know, international relations have been changed and new concepts and new contexts are being discussed among the scientists of international relations to change existing structure of politics used to promote relations and to solve problems peacefully by realizing the expectations of the sides. In this context, it should be also considered the changing structure of internal political atmospheres in which public opinion comprise from students willing to live together a nonconflictual climate, to the business world tried to survive in a very competitive era. By overlooking of changing structure, we face to face, it must be comprehended that providing a high level of living standard to our public which they deserve is not possible.
In this paper, it is emphasized a new problem-solving approach which both neighboring country, at the last point, will choose. It is suggested to develop a new model to change the character of relations from the model of a zero-sum game to a positive-sum game. In other words, I am discussing in my study how to change the present situation of relations between both countries and/or whether the context of relations could be changed. This only can be achieved by accepting or regarding the world conditions as a realistic view but not by a realist theory which assumes international politics as a power struggle.

Soğuk Savaş yıllarında Batı Blokunda yer alan iki ülke arasında yaşanacak bir sıcak çatışma ABD'nin bölgedeki çıkarlarını olumsuz olarak etkileyeceğinden ABD Merkezi İstihbarat Teşkilatı CIA, Ege Denizi'nde yaşanan gelişmeleri yakından takip etmiştir. Bu süreçte CIA, ABD'nin diğer istihbarat teşkilatlarıyla ortak hareket ederek ABD'nin gelişmeler karşısında tavrını şekillendirmeye çalışmıştır. Bu nedenle CIA Arşivi, Ege Sorunu hakkında zengin bir içerik barındırmaktadır. Çalışmada, Soğuk Savaş yıllarında adaların genel durumu üzerinde durulurken yaşanan gelişmeler CIA arşiv belgeleri ışığında ele alınmaktadır. Belgelerde o dönem yaşanan gelişmelerin perde arkası, bulgu ve belgeler perspektifinde elde edilen bilgiler ortaya konulmaktadır. Geopolitics, which took place in a study of Rudolf Kjellen on the borders of Sweden (1899), was popularized by Karl Haushofer during the First World War and gained a number of meanings between the two wars in Germany. The propaganda against Nazi Germany following World War II turned into a necessary and strict strategic approach to examine the term 'geopolitics' on the one hand, related to Nazi foreign policy and on the other hand, global policies that the allies cannot ignore. Concepts such as geopolitics did not have a meaning or identity as the world order has changed in processes such as change. But it simply means equivalent to political realism or real politics. Geopolitics was commemorated by imperialism in the 19th century, fascism in the 20th century, Marxism-Leninism and contemporary liberal policies.

In the theoretical understanding of critical geopolitics, it has taken place as a geographical discourse in the international policies that emerged with the discipline of political science and geography. Geopolitics, especially in countries like Turkey and Greece in all the ideological confrontation of the Cold War period, has been a part of the process occurring in the regional axis.

The report analyses the Greek – Turkish relations based on the two following parts:

• The first part of the report focuses on how the Greek online public opinion perceive the Turkish foreign policy towards Greece and Athens’ government reactions. The methodology is based on the use of PaloPro, a web & social listening & analytics tool which shows the mentions and sentiments of all Greek-speaking internet (news, blogs, forums, social media). The results based on the query of “Greek – Turkish relations” (including specific keywords). The Greek- Turkish online report shows only the view of Greek online public opinion. It does not express the author personal views.

• The second part focuses on the analysis for Greek – Turkish relations to forecast, as far as possible, the course of Greek – Turkish dispute based on the research conducted by the author. This part analyses: (a) The Turkish strategy and its goals, (b) Athens’ foreign policy towards Turkey and its problems (c) The military balance of power in the Aegean Sea and (d) The scenarios of a possible conflict between Greece and Turkey.

Susa potters were hard working, and most of the decorative techniques were done professionally. In this paper pottery motifs were extracted in a linear form by Rhinoceros 4.0 software and have been studied in four groups of geometric, floral, animal and inscription motifs separately in order to discover not only the design styles, but the importance and status of each genre, in addition to considering the influences of other centers or eras. The quantitative study on objects in this paper indicates that most of the motifs are geometrics, while the fewest are animals; the most common composition of motifs in a material is geometric-floral. Despite the considerable influence of previous periods and other centers of Persian pottery, as well as, the influence or imitation of contemporary centers and the significant importance of the "religious" factor, this paper also shows that Islamic Susa has best manifested its prehistoric traditions, and has deliberately used them along with specific Islamic styles.
