The poet Antonio Bruni (Manduria 1593-Rome 1635), in his laudatory pamphlet entitled "La Ghirlanda" (1625), criticizes Caravaggio's drawing skills while praising him for his ability to imitate nature. The contribution examines the origin and value of this judgment related to the context of the academic world and demonstrates the contiguity and continuity between Bruni's thought and that of some protagonists of the seventeenth-century artistic literature, such as Gaspare Celio, Giovanni, Baglione and Giovanni Pietro Bellori.
