The aim of the present study was to examine an adapted integrated psycho-social model to predict sport injury rehabilitation adherence. A longitudinal prospective design was used whereby 70 patients attending private physiotherapy clinics completed a battery of questionnaires both pre- and post-rehabilitation treatment based on the adapted framework. All participants were receiving treatment for tendonitis-related injuries. Adherence was monitored prospectively over the entire rehabilitation program using an observational measure of clinic adherence, a self-report measure of home-based adherence, in addition to monitoring attendance at rehabilitation sessions. In the initial phase of rehabilitation learning goal orientation, attitudes and perceived severity were found to predict rehabilitation intention. Intentions were also found to mediate the relationship between the aforementioned variables and clinic rehabilitation. Self-efficacy and self-motivation were predictors of clinic rehabilitation and attendance but not home rehabilitation. During the maintenance phase of rehabilitation coping ability and social support were predictors regarding all three measures of adherence. Implications for practitioners rehabilitating injured athletes are discussed.

This paper addresses and implements a Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) transceiver for Visible Light Communication (VLC) systems based on FPGA. A transceiver was implemented including a transmitter capable of driving an array of light emitting diodes (LED) and a Pseudo-Noise (PN) matched decorrelator. The receiver architecture uses a discrete FIR correlator for data synchronization and acquisition. In this paper, a novel and simple PN code with a 10 bit sequence length is developed. This code ...

Bifidobacteria represent important human commensals because of their perceived contribution to the maintenance of a balanced gastro intestinal tract (GIT). In recent years bifidobacteria have drawn much scientific attention because of their use as live bacteria in numerous food preparations with various health-related claims. For such reasons these bacteria constitute a growing area of interest with respect to genomics, molecular biology and genetics. This review will discuss the current knowledge on the molecular players that allow bifidobacteria to contend with heat-, osmotic-, bile-and acidic stress. Here, we describe the principal molecular chaperones involved in such stresses, as well as their use as phylogenetic markers for gaining insight into the evolutionary history of high G+C Gram positive bacteria.

Systematic methods for improving response rates in surveys has been an area of interest for researchers for some time following the articulation of the Total Design Method (Dillman 1978) which included applying aspects of social influence and social exchange theory to encourage responses. One part of the literature focused on the idea of offering a tangible but token incentive to respondents at the time of the request for data. Subsequent research and experience has shown that appropriate incentives do improve respondent cooperation in terms of obtaining better response rates (eg Singer and Wilmot 1997; Yammarino, Skinner and Childers 1991). The focus of most work has been on using monetary or token material incentives for surveys of individuals, so little is known about the problem of how to motivate businesses and the individuals in them to respond. The situation of National Statistical Organisations (NSOs) conducting surveys of businesses is also different to that of many other s...

Watershed management and early warning flood forecasting system is becoming more and more important especially in relation to anticipated climate change. The characteristics and the validation of the Cetemps HYdrological Model (CHYM) developed by the hydrological group of the Cetemps Center of Excellence are described. CHYM is a grid based model and the main physical processes concerning the hydrological cycle are implemented in the model (Todini and Ciarrapica, 2002; Sorooshian et al., 1995). In the preprocessing phase different data sources are assimilated by the model in order to reconstruct precipitation field on the area of interest. At the moment the available data are the observed rain gauge values, the forecasted MM5 precipitation fields and the satellite rainfall estimation (Grimes et al., 2003). This multisources data acquisition system using observed and forecasted data makes it possible to simulate a time window that span from few days before the event to few days after....

Knowledge about the quality of end-of-life care in the elderly patient in Europe is fragmented. The European Union Geriatric Medicine Society (EUGMS) Geriatric Palliative Medicine (GPM) Interest Group set as one of its goals to better characterize geriatric palliative care in Europe. The goal of the current study was to map the existing palliative care structures for geriatric patients, the available policies, legislation, and associations in geriatric palliative medicine in different countries of Europe. A questionnaire was sent to Geriatric and Palliative Medicine Societies of European countries through contact persons. The areas of interest were (1) availability of services for the management of geriatric patients by using vignette patients (advanced cancer, severe cardiac disease, and severe dementia), (2) policies, legislation of palliative care, and (3) associations involved in geriatric palliative medicine. Out of 21 countries contacted, 19 participated. Palliative care units and home care palliative consultation teams are available in most countries. In contrast, palliative care in long-term care facilities and in geriatric wards is less developed. A disparity was found between the available services and those most appropriate to take care of the three cases described in the vignettes, especially for the patient dying from non-malignant diseases. The survey also demonstrated that caregivers are not well prepared to care for the elderly palliative patient at home or in nursing homes. One of the challenges for the years to come will be to develop palliative care structures adapted to the needs of the elderly in Europe, but also to improve the education of health professionals in this field.

Highway construction activities are important to communities both because of the investment they represent as well as the changes they cause. In larger cities, new highways represent growth and are welcomed by most of the general population as they often relieve congestion, shorten travel time, and provide new business opportunities. (10) However, in many small and medium-sized communities, a new

PURPOSE: The purpose of this Coastal and Hydraulics Engineering Technical Note (CHETN) is to demonstrate the use of BOUSS-2D in three example applications. The BOUSS-2D is a Boussinesq wave model that is now part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Surface-Water Modeling System (SMS). Demirbilek et al. (2004) gives a detailed description of the SMS interface of BOUSS-2D. This second technical note in BOUSS-2D series is a step-by-step tutorial that shows the usage of the model through illustrative examples. The next CHETN in the series will describe the time-series and frequency-domain analysis utilities and techniques developed for post-processing BOUSS-2D model results. Details of the BOUSS-2D model theory, numerical implementation, and example applications are presented in a technical report (Nwogu and Demirbilek 2001). BACKGROUND: As a phase-resolving nonlinear wave model, BOUSS-2D can be used in the modeling of various wave phenomena including shoaling, refraction, diffr...

Assessment for Learning (AfL) is an international assessment area of interest, yet, during 20 years of AfL research, the desired outcome of increased learner autonomy remains elusive. This article analyses AfL practices in classrooms as students negotiated identities as autonomous learners within a classroom community of practice. A sociocultural theoretical framework informed the analysis of three case studies conducted in Queensland middle school classrooms. Key findings include the importance of the teacher–student relationship, viewing AfL as patterns of participation that develop expertise, and learner autonomy as a negotiated learner identity within each classroom context.

This paper investigates the concept of online learning community (OLC) to address the issues of teacher professional development practice in twenty-first-century Indonesia. Teachers in Indonesia are trained in a ‘conventional way’, hence, not ready to prepare the younger generations for entrance into the twenty-first-century complex life and work environment. The pedagogical transformation of a teacher can be facilitated through teacher professional development. Recent studies show that OLC holds great promise in improving teachers’ professional practice. This paper presents key results of the introduction and trialling of OLC with Indonesian teachers and teacher educators between 2009 and 2010 and aims to explore the feasibility of this model to support professional development of teachers in this era. The social learning interactions among community members were examined using Scardamalia’s Twelve Socio-Cognitive Determinants of Knowledge Building and Hoftsede’s Cultural Dimension Review for Indonesia.

The psychological behaviorism theory of pain unifies biological, behavioral, and cognitive-behavioral theories of pain and facilitates development of a common vocabulary for pain research across disciplines. Pain investigation proceeds in seven interacting realms: basic biology, conditioned learning, language cognition, personality differences, pain behavior, the social environment, and emotions. Because pain is an emotional response, examining the bidirectional impact of emotion is pivotal to understanding pain. Emotion influences each of the other areas of interest and causes the impact of each factor to amplify or diminish in an additive fashion. Research based on this theory of pain has revealed the ameliorating impact on pain of (1) improving mood by engaging in pleasant sexual fantasies, (2) reducing anxiety, and (3) reducing anger through various techniques. Application of the theory to therapy improved the results of treatment of osteoarthritic pain. The psychological behavi...
