All My Sons is a powerful play that holds up to scrutiny an American story of success at a high cost and the devastation that malignant success brings to so many others. With this play Miller established himself as a major talent and voice of conscience. It is a study of the results of failure in family and social responsibility and is remarkable for its tightness of structure and its honest facing of the problem of how a man should act in the complicated modern world. It has been described as an Ibsenite play and certainly if we restrict Ibsen to the kind of play he wrote between The league of Youth (1869) and Rosmersholm (1886). According to Raymond Williams, " The similarities are indeed so striking that we could call All My Sons pastiche if the force of its conception were not so evident. It is perhaps that much rare case, of a writer who temporarily discovers in an existing form an exact way of realizing his own experience. At the centre of the play is the kind of situation which was Ibsen's development of the device of the fatal secret. From Henrik Ibsen's play The Wild Duck Arthur Miller took the idea of two partners in a business where one is forced to take moral and legal responsibility for the other. He also borrows the idea of a character's idealism being the source of a problem. All My Sons is a story about joe Keller. He is a good husband, a good father but not a good citizen that his son, Chris demands. He is an apparently successful businessman who committed a social crime for which he has escaped responsibility. He acquiesced in the sending of defective parts to the American Air Force in wartime and yet allowed another man to take the consequences and imprisonment. The action begins after the war and is basically on the lines of what has been called Ibsen's retrospective method. The ibsen method of showing first an ordinary domestic scene, into which, by gradual infiltration, the crime and guilt enter and build up to the critical eruption, is exactly followed. The process of this destructive infiltration is carefully worked out in terms of the needs of the other characters-Keller's wife and surviving son, the girl whom the son is to marry, the neighbors, the son of the convict-so that the demonstration of social consequences and therefore of Keller's guilt, is not of any abstract principle, but of personal needs and relationships, which compose a reality that directly enforces the truth. Miller's realistic drama All My Sons involves his basic concept of moral responsibility in the family, linking it to the inner struggle of men in authority during the war. Taking the hypothetical case of an executive who allowed defective airplane parts to be shipped to the army rather than ruin his company's business and losing contract, the playwright sought to show the consequences of the man's dereliction.

In 1952, Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible – a fictionalised staging of the 1692 Salem witch trials. As an allegory of McCarthyite anti-communist hysteria in 1950s America, the play could itself be considered a form of sublimation: firstly, of course, in the way that all creative works can be understood, in the Freudian context, as a diversion of the drives (1916-17). But secondly, and as allegory specifically, we could consider it a sort of sublimated political gesture: Miller’s protest against a modern-day witch hunt finding its expression in an alternative form. However, for the purposes of this paper what I want to identify is the socio-political mechanism of sublimation at work both in the context of the production of The Crucible and within its narrative and staging.

Specifically, I intend to explore The Crucible in relation to Slavoj Žižek’s theory of the “sublime object of ideology” (1989). To this end, I will address Miller’s own adaptation of his stage play in Nicholas Hytner’s 1996 film, for the ways in which its formal strategies emphasise the key features of social conflict that drive persecution. And while it might, at first face, seem almost an error of category to examine the “sublime” in the context of a symposium on sublimation, it is worth noting that both Freud (1930) and Lacan (1992) emphasised the social function of sublimation. Moreover, Žižek’s theory relies specifically on Lacan’s most succinct definition of sublimation, as the elevation of the object “to the dignity of the Thing” (1992: 134), which we can understand here as the raising of something quotidian to a privileged position within the social fabric. Reflecting the terrible fascination of the Thing, such an object may be venerated or, indeed, denigrated, like the totemic animal that is both worshipped and sacrificed in order to ensure the cohesion of the tribe or clan (Freud 1913). In this paper, I will focus on what Žižek calls the sublime object as “negative magnitude” (1997: 81) to explore the logic of scapegoating – where the internal contradictions or antagonisms of a particular society are ideologically displaced onto an external figure of the Other – that we can chart from (at least) the Salem witch trials to the present day refugee crisis.

Tragedy has always been a prominent genre in drama around the world. In fact, to the ancient Greeks, tragedy is a genre so significant that it is associated with religious practices and the religious concept of purification. That is why Aristotle dedicated his book “De Poetica” or “Poetics” for highlighting the features of a perfect tragedy and the perfect character of tragedy or, in other words, tragic hero. Aristotle’s theory regarding the characterization of the tragic hero is applied mainly to the classical tragic heroes such as Oedipus from “Oedipus the King”. The Elizabethan tragic hero, such as Shakespeare’s King Lear also follows Aristotle’s theory, yet with some developments such as decreasing the rank of the tragic hero and giving more focus to the character of tragedy rather than the plot structure or the philosophy of the tragedy alone. Years later, in the 20th century, Arthur Miller comes up with his own theory on the characterization of the tragic hero. Miller disregards the condition of nobility of the tragic hero, thus making common men such as Willie Loman from “Death of a Salesman” and Eddie Carbone from “A View from the Bridge” eligible subjects for tragic heroes as much as royalties, and proceeds with his age’s notion of individualism and applies it to his characters. This research thus aims to explore the development of the tragic hero between Aristotle and Miller. The research will compare and contrast the theories of the philosopher and the dramatist and the features each of them set for the tragic hero. The research will apply Aristotle’s theory to the plays “Oedipus the King” by Sophocles and “King Lear” by Shakespeare, and applies Arthur Miller’s theory to his plays “Death of a Salesman” and “A View from the Bridge”. The tragic hero will be proven to have undergone a path of individualization, shifting from a mere tool to convey the overall philosophy of the tragedy to become the heart and soul of the tragedy.

Ο συλλογικός τόμος Προσεγγίσεις στην ιστορία του κινηματογράφου είναι το αποτέλεσμα ερευνητικών εργασιών σπουδαστριών και σπουδαστών του Τμήματος Φιλολογίας του Πανεπιστημίου Κρήτης. Οι απαρχές της δημιουργίας του τόμου μπήκαν το 2017, όταν, στο πλαίσιο του μεταπτυχιακού σεμιναρίου «Ιστορία και ιστοριογραφία του κινηματογράφου», φοιτητές και φοιτήτριες από διαφορετικές κατευθύνσεις του τμήματος – κινηματογράφου, θεατρολογίας, γλωσσολογίας, κλασικών και νεοελληνικών σπουδών – είδαν με ενθουσιασμό την προοπτική της ιστορικής μελέτης του κινηματογράφου. Εκκινώντας από τα δικά τους ευρύτερα ενδιαφέροντα, πραγματοποίησαν πρωτότυπη έρευνα σε επιμέρους πεδία της κινηματογραφικής ιστορίας όπως η κινηματογραφική επιχειρηματική δραστηριότητα, η πρόσληψη ταινιών, οι αναπαραστάσεις ιστορικών γεγονότων και κοινωνικών ομάδων και η κινηματογραφική διασκευή. Ένα χρόνο αργότερα, τον Οκτώβριο του 2018, πορίσματα αυτών των εργασιών, καθώς και μελέτες υποψήφιων διδακτόρων και νεαρών επιστημόνων του κινηματογράφου από το ίδιο τμήμα παρουσιάστηκαν στο συνέδριο «Προσεγγίσεις στην ιστορία του κινηματογράφου», το οποίο χρηματοδοτήθηκε από τον Ειδικό Λογαριασμό Έρευνας και Κονδυλίων Πανεπιστημίου Κρήτης και το Τμήμα Φιλολογίας και έλαβε χώρα στο Ινστιτούτο Μεσογειακών Σπουδών του Ιδρύματος Τεχνολογίας και Έρευνας στο Ρέθυμνο.
Ο παρών τόμος περιλαμβάνει δώδεκα κείμενα που συνιστούν αναπτυγμένες και σε βάθος αναθεωρημένες μορφές ομιλιών του συνεδρίου και επιλέχτηκαν για έκδοση κατόπιν κρίσης. Τα δώδεκα μελετήματα καλύπτουν ποικίλες πτυχές της ιστορικής κινηματογραφικής έρευνας, και συγκεκριμένα, ζητήματα διανομής, προβολής και πρόσληψης ταινιών∙ καταγραφές και αναπαραστάσεις θεσμών, κοινωνικών ομάδων και ιστορικών γεγονότων∙ σχέσεις του κινηματογράφου με άλλες τέχνες∙ και θεματικές για τον ελληνικό κινηματογράφο που σπάνια έχουν εξεταστεί (από την Εισαγωγή του τόμου).
