Gefahrstoffe in Museumsobjekten – Erhaltung oder Entsorgung?

Substanzen, die ein chemisches Gefährdungspotential aufweisen, befinden sich entweder in reiner Form oder als Bestandteil eines Stoffgemisches in den Sammlungen vieler musealer Institutionen. Wegen ihrer Eigenschaften - explosionsgefährlich, entzündlich, giftig, gesundheitsschädlich oder umweltgefährlich - gehören sie gesondert behandelt. Stark betroffen sind unter anderem historische Chemikalien- und Medikamentensammlungen oder technische Objekte mit Asbest- und Quecksilberbestandteilen. Dazu kommt eine beachtliche Menge organischer Materialien, die in der Vergangenheit zum Zweck der Schädlingsbekämpfung mit Biozid kontaminiert wurden. Auch wenn der Umgang mit radioaktiven Stoffen in der Strahlenschutzverordnung und nicht in der Gefahrstoffverordnung gesetzlich geregelt ist, gehören auch radioaktive Werkstoffe zu den Materialien, die eines besonderen Umganges bedürfen: beim Handling, beim Lagern, Ausstellen oder bei der Durchführung konservatorischer Maßnahmen.
Angesichts der restriktiven Gesetze stellt ein sicherer und objektgerechter Umgang mit belastetem Sammlungsgut eine neue und komplexe Herausforderung für Museen dar. Die Entwicklung von Strategien über den Umgang mit Gefahrstoffen drängt. Die Strategieansätze müssen einerseits an die Gesetzeslage, aber auch an die denkmalpflegerischen Richtlinien angepasst werden. Hier gilt umso mehr der Grundsatz, dass erst die genaue Kenntnis über die Objekte zu einem verständnisvollen Umgang führt. Im folgenden Vortrag wird ein Überblick über gefahrbelastete Objekte gegeben und auf das Spannungsfeld zwischen Bewahren und Entsorgen näher eingegangen. 


Hazardous Substances in Museum Objects – Presevation or Disposal?

Substances which pose a potential chemical hazard normally occur either in a pure form or as a component in a mixture in the collections of many museum institutions. Due to their characteristics – combustibility, inflammability, toxicity, danger to health or the environment – they need to be managed apart. The most affected are historic collections of chemicals and medication, and technical objects containing asbestos and mercury. In addition to these hazards there is a considerable amount of organic materials that have been contaminated with biocides as pest control in the past. Even though the management of radioactive substances actually falls under the regulations for radiation protection rather than those for hazardous substances, such substances also demand special treatment and handling in regard to storage, exhibition and conservation.
In view of the restrictive laws governing such substances, the safe and respectful management of affected collection objects poses a new and complex challenge for museums. The development of strategies for the management of hazardous substances is urgent. Strategic approaches have to take not only legislation but also conservation guidelines into account. Here in particular the valid tennet is that only a thorough knowledge of the object leads to its intelligent management. In the following paper an overview of the hazardous objects will be presented and the conflict between preservation and disposal more closely examined.

In order to examine the associations between sinonasal cancer and occupational exposures other than wood dust and leather dust, the data from 12 case-control studies conducted in seven countries were pooled and reanalyzed. The pooled data set included 195 adenocarcinoma cases (169 men and 26 women), 432 squamous cell carcinomas (330 men and 102 women), and 3136 controls (2349 men and 787 women). Occupational exposures to formaldehyde, silica dust, textile dust, coal dust, flour dust, asbestos, and man-made vitreous fibers were assessed with a job-exposure matrix. Odds ratios (ORs) were adjusted for age, study, wood dust, and leather dust, or other occupational exposures when relevant. 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated by unconditional logistic regression. A significantly increased risk of adenocarcinoma was associated with exposure to formaldehyde. Ao se estudar e analisar resíduos sólidos, nota-se a relação entre os aspectos ocupacionais, ambientais e de saúde. Os resíduos sólidos provenientes de materiais contendo amianto são comprovadamente nocivos, causando o adoecimento dos trabalhadores e culminando em uma questão de saúde pública. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo analisar o manejo das telhas de fibrocimento contendo amianto e a existência de perspectivas de desamiantização nas instalações da Universidade Federal da Bahia em Salvador/BA. Trata-se de um estudo do tipo exploratório com abordagem qualitativa em que a coleta de dados ocorreu por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas com trabalhadores telhadistas, servidores, estudantes e professores dessa universidade e por meio do exame das legislações vigentes. A análise documental mostrou que os dispositivos legais e normativos identificados carecem de recursos e ações para serem implementados e que não há uma política de incentivo à desamiantização, assim como revelou a carência de áreas públicas para destinação final ambientalmente adequada do material contaminado e a falta de uma fiscalização apropriada. A pesquisa não identificou haver uma perspectiva de desamiantização na UFBA, apesar de ter constatado a existência de pessoas expostas ao risco invisível provocado pelo amianto. O estudo mostra um cenário de degradação ambiental e preocupante para a saúde coletiva, mas que também estimula a discussão de soluções e o desenvolvimento de novas pesquisas.

This occurrence is in the eastern foothills of the Santa Rosa Mountains at the community of Cahuilla Hills. MRDS plots this mine in the center of Section 36, but it could be anywhere within that 640 acres.

DEVELOPMENT

At the time this deposit was surveyed, ore mineralization was documenting in and outcrop, shallow pits, or isolated drill hole. Aside from routine maintenance, there has been no production and little or no activity since discovery. This also means that details including grade, tonnage, and extent of mineralization are unknown. Section 36 is well developed with homesites. Evidence for a quarry in Section 36 section is difficult to see in the ESRI aerial photograph.

GEOLOGY

The mine location (from MRDS, 2011) is shown as Quaternary fanglomerate, but the area is surrounded by metamorphic quartz diorite (Dibblee, 2008b). The asbestos is most likely in a sheer zone in the quartz diorite.

The Tuscany Mesothelioma Register (ARTMM) records pleural malignant mesothelioma cases of Tuscany residents, diagnosed by histological, cytological, or clinical (radiography or computerized tomography) examinations. The ARTMM began in 1988 and estimates mesothelioma incidence in Tuscany and collects information on past asbestos exposure of mesothelioma cases. The aim of this paper was to describe the incidence of pleural mesothelioma cases in Tuscany and to analyse their possible past asbestos exposures. We considered pleural mesothelioma cases recorded in ARTMM in the period 1988-2000 and interviews collected for these cases. Carbon nanotubes focus the attention of many scientists because of their huge potential of industrial applications, but there is a paucity of information on the toxicological properties of this material. The aim of this experimental study was to characterize the biological reactivity of purified multi-wall carbon nanotubes in the rat lung and in vitro. Multi-wall carbon nanotubes (CNT) or ground CNT were administered intratracheally (0.5, 2 or 5 mg) to Sprague–Dawley rats and we estimated lung persistence, inflammation and fibrosis biochemically and histologically. CNT and ground CNT were still present in the lung after 60 days (80% and 40% of the lowest dose) and both induced inflammatory and fibrotic reactions. At 2 months, pulmonary lesions induced by CNT were characterized by the formation of collagen-rich granulomas protruding in the bronchial lumen, in association with alveolitis in the surrounding tissues. These lesions were caused by the accumulation of large CNT agglomerates in the airways. Ground CNT were better dispersed in the lung parenchyma and also induced inflammatory and fibrotic responses. Both CNT and ground CNT stimulated the production of TNF-α in the lung of treated animals. In vitro, ground CNT induced the overproduction of TNF-α by macrophages. These results suggest that carbon nanotubes are potentially toxic to humans and that strict industrial hygiene measures should to be taken to limit exposure during their manipulation.

Asbest aantonen in (bouw)materialen 0. inleiding: wat is asbest en waarom werd het in bouwmaterialen gebruikt ? Asbest de verzamelnaam van minerale vezels van natuurlijke oorsprong die worden toegevoegd aan cementgebonden bouwmaterialen om op die manier een composietmateriaal te maken met hoge trek-en buigsterkte. Feitelijk kan het beschouwd worden als een wapening waardoor dunne elementen, platen, buizen en vormstukken kunnen worden gemaakt. Wanneer asbestvezels worden verwerkt in cementgebonden systemen dan is het " asbestcement " bij ons best bekend als " Eternit " i. Het materiaal werd vooral verwerkt tot golfplaten voor daken en dakschalies. Verder werd het veel gebruikt voor buizen voor drink-en afvalwater. Minder bekend is de toepassing van asbestcement in decoratieve wandpanelen, vaak met een " houtlook ". De toepassing van asbesthoudende producten viel in ongenade toen werd vastgesteld dat de vrije asbestvezels longaandoeningen (asbestose en zelfs longkanker) kunnen veroorzaken. Thans wordt de aanmaak en de verkoop van asbesthoudende producten verboden. 1. Waarom zijn asbesthoudende producten gevaarlijk ? Al die mineralen hebben één eigenschap gemeen: ze splijten gemakkelijk tot vezels. Sommige van die vezels zijn stijf en hard terwijl andere een veeleer wollig karakter hebben. Die vezels kunnen zo dun en zo kort zijn dat ze enkel microscopisch waargenomen kunnen worden. Asbestvezeltjes verplaatsen zich gemakkelijk door de lucht. Hoewel de asbestvezels in de cementgebonden composieten wel gebonden zijn door cement is die binding is louter fysisch. Door verwerking als zagen en slijpen kunnen de vezels los komen en zich als stof in de lucht manifesteren. Ook de verwering aan de lucht (zure regen) kan het cementbindmiddel verzwakken waardoor de vezels niet meer gebonden blijven. Het zijn die los zwevende vezeltjes die gezondheidsschadelijk zijn. Zij kunnen het longweefsel beschadigen en worden dan ingekapseld hetgeen en aanzet naar longkanker kan zijn. Let wel: de gebonden vezels zijn onschadelijk zolang ze gebonden blijven en dus zijn die bouwmaterialen op zich dan ongevaarlijk. 2.Wat is asbest ? Asbest is een algemene benaming voor een reeks vezelvormige mineralen. Er bestaan verschillende soorten asbestmineralen te verdelen in twee hoofdgroepen:-de spiraalvormige of serpentijnachtige, waaronder chrysotiel (ofwel wit asbest)-de rechte of amfiboolachtige, waaronder crocidoliet (blauw asbest), amosiet (bruin asbest), anthophylliet (geel), tremoliet (grijs) en actinoliet (groen). De meest gebruikte soorten in cementgebonden composiet materialen waren chrysotiel en crocidoliet. Asbest is geen mineraal maar een verzamelnaam van mineralen waaronder de twee boosdoeners, chrysotiel en crocidoliet.

 The kinetics of the dehydroxylation of chrysotile was followed in situ at high temperature using real-time conventional and synchrotron powder diffraction (XRPD). This is the first time kinetics parameters have been calculated for the dehydroxylation of chrysotile. The value of the order of the reaction mechanism calculated using the Avrami model indicates that the rate-limiting step of the reaction is a one-dimensional diffusion with an instantaneous nucleation or a deceleratory rate of nucleation of the reaction product. Hence, the rate-limiting step is the one-dimensional diffusion of the water molecules formed in the interlayer region by direct condensation of two hydrogen atoms and an oxygen atom. The calculated apparent activation energy of the reaction in the temperature range 620–750 °C is 184 kJ mol−1. The diffusion path is along the axis of the fibrils forming the fibers. The amorphous or short-range ordered dehydroxylate of chrysotile is extremely unstable because forsterite readily nucleates in the Mg-rich regions. Moreover, it is less stable than the dehydroxylate of kaolinite, the so-called metakaolinite, which forms mullite at about 950 °C. This difference is interpreted in terms of the different nature of the two ions Mg2+ and Al3+ and their function as glass modifier and glass-forming ion, respectively.

Sobretudo no campo da saúde humana, os avanços da
ciência são capazes, cada vez mais, de relacionar fatores biológicos,
comportamentais e ambientais com o surgimento e o desenvolvimento de
doenças multifatorais como o câncer. O amianto ou asbesto, substância
conhecida desde da antiguidade e largamente utilizada pela indústria
em razão de suas notáveis propriedades, revelou-se, após décadas
de estudo, altamente perigoso para a saúde. O reconhecimento dos
riscos envolvidos na exploração, industrialização e comercialização
do amianto é importante para reorientar a legislação nacional que
transige com a exploração comercial da variedade crisotila. A percepção
desses riscos também é fundamental para solucionar problemas típicos
de responsabilidade civil, como o das indenizações pleiteadas por
trabalhadores expostos ao amianto. Não é fácil, porém, nas hipóteses de
doenças sujeitas à causalidade múltipla, identificar o fator patogênico
para efeito de estabelecimento de responsabilidade civil. Na Justiça
do Trabalho, a dificuldade de se comprovar a relação causal entre
a doença diagnosticada e o fator de risco presente no ambiente de
trabalho tem sido contornada pela presunção decorrente do conceito
de doença ocupacional.

Natural waste has been used to produce fillers and fibers, including palm kernel shell and fiber, groundnut shell, maize husk, rice straw and husk, jute, coconut shell, cotton, and cellulose. This review work seeks to explore research using combinations of fillers and fibers at different ratios with a view to further studying their effects on brake pad properties using various mixtures for the production. The influence of different binders such as phenolic resin, epoxy resin and others were also investigated. Composite materials from fiber and fillers have been seen to improve composite mechanical properties, reduce costs and increase impact strength. The choice of fiber, filler, binder, particle size and composition play important responsibility in the composite of the brake pad performance. In order to obtain better physical properties, palm kernel fiber and coconut fiber brake pads were studied and the composition percentage was optimized.

The unique set of physical and chemical properties of asbestos has led to its many industrial applications, such as roof coverings, textiles, rope, cord and yarn, paper, friction and composition materials, household product, acid-resistant filters, packing, insulation, and certain types of lagging, amongst others. In Poland asbestos-containing products were manufactured from raw materials imported mainly from the former Soviet Union, with production launched at the beginning of 20th century. According to Annex 4 to the Act of 19 June 1997 on the prohibition of the use of asbestos-containing products, there were 28 asbestos manufacturing plants in Poland located in 11 provinces throughout the country. The current survey was undertaken to enable asbestos manufacturing plants to be arranged, described and divided in order to contribute to further surveys.

Approximately three million workers in the United States are estimated to be exposed to silica, man-made mineral fibers, and asbestos. The lung is the primary target organ of concern. Each of these substances is composed predominantly of silicon and oxygen; asbestos and silica are crystalline, and asbestos and man-made mineral fibers are fibers. Man-made mineral fibers and asbestos are used as insulating agents, with the former having generally replaced the latter in recent years. Silica is used in foundries, pottery, and brick making, and is encountered by miners. A meta-analysis of 16 of the largest studies with well-documented silica exposure and low probability of confounding by other occupational exposures, indicates a relative risk (RR) of 1.3 (95 percent confidence interval [CI] = 1.2-1.4). The purpose of this research was to create awareness on asbestos and its effects to both human beings and their environments, to find out possible asbestos alternatives | substitute products, discover why there is still prevalent use of asbestos-containing materials despite its ban and also to formulate viable management strategies & policies for asbestos use. This project report is divided into five phases or chapters which includes;

The first chapter, which is the introduction, defines asbestos, its types, uses, effects and proper management and disposal procedures. This first chapter also gives background of the study on global, regional, national and local scenarios on asbestos use, the problem statement, objectives of the project, assumptions and premises, theoretical framework, significance, scope and the expected limitations of the project.

The second chapter is the literature review which supports the topic of research through previously done research work done focusing on the same topic. The information on the literature review were gotten from library books, journals, newspapers and articles from the internet.

The third chapter is the methodology, which includes; the study area, research design, target population, sample size & sampling procedure, data collection methods & analysis.

The fourth chapter gives empirical evidence on asbestos use in Nairobi County’s industrial, residential and central business district (CBD). It contains analyzed data arrived at from the findings of the study.

The fifth chapter provides general conclusions of the study including recommendations for asbestos users, policy makers and further future researchers. This final chapter also confirms whether the objectives of the study had been achieved.

This thesis provides new, fundamental insights into the morphological features, chronology and development of Bronze Age ceramics from Norwegian burial contexts (1700-500 BC). It furthermore focuses on how different depositional practices of pottery in the Bronze Age, as well as the pottery itself, can be interpreted socially and ritually within a framework of relational identity.
The study has included finds of ceramic vessels and lids from both Early Bronze Age/EBA (1700-1100 BC) and Late Bronze Age/LBA (1100-500 BC). Based on the prevalence of the findings, a division was made into four analysis regions: Nordland/North-West Norway, Sunnhordland/Karmøy, South-West Norway and Eastern Norway. The material were then divided into two main categories: rock-tempered ceramics and western Norwegian asbestos ceramics. The rock tempered ceramics is interpeted as part of an overreaching tradition and development primarily from southern Scandinavian bronze age pottery. The asbestos ceramic is exclusively found in EBA graves in the northernmost analysis region, rooted or influenced by the Fennoscandian tradition of asbestos tempering but made in a specifically local style and in burial contexts that connects to southern Scandinavia.
Methodically, the analysis builds on detailed classifications and reconstructions of pottery. The basis for the chronology is a combination of new 14C datings of cremated remains from urns, re-calibrated 14C dates from several previously dated contexts as well as typological dates. The works and knowledge on ceramics from the bronze age i Norway is extremely limited, chronologies and insights from mainly Danish and Swedish publications have therefore been actively applied.
Overall, the development can be described as follows: In the EBA the rock tempered pottery appears in both inhumation and cremation graves. The finds are few in number and often fragmented, partly because of the practice of intentional deposition of fragmented pottery/pottery sherds in graves. These are coarse-tempered wares, small-medium size vessels that shows a limited range of shapes and designs – similar to the better studied South Scandinavian EBA-pottery. The asbestos tempered pottery is in one way related to the Fennoscandian tradition of asbestos tempering but with an isolated and specifically regional style, operating as regional emblems of identity in an elite network with ties to Skjælland in Denmark.
The rock-tempered ceramics in southern Scandinavia are undergoing major changes from EBA to YBA, due to the fact that new drinking culture and table culture were shared through new contact routes. This also changed the areas of use for ceramics, seeing new shapes, styles and uses. In Norway, very few graves are associated with this transition, and the pottery provides little morphological information. However, cremation became dominant in large parts of Europe around 1100 BC as part of the Urnfield pheonmenon and the use of ceramic vessels as urns became common in many places simultaneousy. As this study shows, the practice of using ceramic containers as burial urns are established in Norway around 1100 BC – first in the areas of Sunnhordland/Sør-Vestlandet. The urns from this early phase are part of a shared northern European stylistic design/ideal with similar shapes, sizes and design patterns (known as A-type). Around period IV/V, there is greater variation and individuality in the urns and in this phase the first face-urns emerges. Face urns are concidered part of the European face-urn phenomenon – a set of shared similar ideas and practices but made in local styles. Towards the end of the Bronze Age, the choice of vessel shapes and decorations is narrowed down and simplified and this follows into the start of the Pre-Roman Iron Age. In the later part of the LBA the connection to southern Scandinavia are clear through the B-type designs – designs that are adopted also into the earliest soapstone vessels and Risvik-asbestos ceramics.
This thesis gives new insight into a category of archaeological finds from the Norwegian Bronze Age that never before have been systemized. Furthermore, it contrubutes to a wider and perhaps different perspective on burial practices in the Bronze Age by recognizing ceramics as a meaningful source of knowledge on how burial customs were carried out and how relational identity was displayed – locally, regionally and inter-regionally.

This is an experimental article which tries to spatialize / map the risk of asbestos on the grounds of the mass demolitions during the so-called 'urban transformation' process in #Istanbul, Turkey.
