Turnip mosaic potyvirus is a virus of brassicas that emerged from a lineage of monocotyledon-infecting potyviruses about 1000 years ago. In vivo and in silico studies all indicate that sites, primarily in its protein 3 (P3) and cylindrical inclusion protein (CI) genes, but also its small 6kDa 2 protein (6K2) and genome-linked viral protein (VPg) genes, control host specificity in a dynamic way. It is most likely that non-unique combinations of transient viral genomic single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), not all of them non-synonymous, allowed the host switch to occur. These SNPs were probably ephemeral and replaced over time by other combinations as the population subsequently diverged within, and adapted to, the brassica host population.

Neonicotinoid insecticides are commonly-used as seed treatments on flowering crops such as oilseed rape. Their persistence and solubility in water increase the chances of environmental contamination via surface-runoff or drainage into areas adjacent to the crops. However, their uptake and fate into non-target vegetation remains poorly understood. In this study, we analysed samples of foliage collected from neonicotinoid seed-treated oilseed rape plants and also compared the levels of neonicotinoid residues in foliage (range: 1.4-11ng/g) with the levels found in pollen collected from the same plants (range: 1.4-22ng/g). Soils polluted by heavy metals can be reclaimed using a number of expensive tactics that either remove the contaminants or stabilize them within the soil. The value of metal accumulating plants for environmental remediation has recently been appreciated and promising results have been obtained. This paper reports a study on the behavior of Brassica napus, Brassica juncea, Raphanus sativus and Brassica carinata grown on a substrate contaminated by several heavy metals caused by the use of contaminated irrigation water. Data on carbon dioxide assimilation, biomass growth and the bioconcentration and translocation factor of each metal in each species were measured. The polluted substrate caused only a small variation in photosynthesis, however transpiration was more affected by the experimental substrate and in all three species of the genus Brassica the presence of metals in the substrate resulted in higher transpiration levels. Two bioconcentration factors were calculated respectively for the roots (BCF) and the shoots (BCF′); the BCF was >1 for all the species for Cd, Cu, Ni and Zn without significant differences among species. All the values of BCF′ were lower than 0.5; among the metals, all Brassica species demonstrated a similar performance for Cd and Zn, whereas for other elements the bioconcentration factor was very low.

Wheat and barley straws, corn stover and switchgrass at two moisture contents were ground using a hammer mill with three different screen sizes (3.2, 1.6 and ). Energy required for grinding these materials was measured. Among the four materials, switchgrass had the highest specific energy consumption (), and corn stover had the least specific energy consumption () at screen size. Physical properties of grinds such as moisture content, geometric mean diameter of grind particles, particle size distribution, and bulk and particle densities were determined. Second- or third-order polynomial models were developed relating bulk and particle densities of grinds to geometric mean diameter within the range of 0.18–. Switchgrass had the highest calorific value and the lowest ash content among the biomass species tested.

Field experiments were conducted at Cereal Crops Research Institute, Pirsabak, Nowshera, Pakistan, during winter 2003∼2004 and 2004∼2005 to evaluate the effect of nitrogen and sulfur levels and methods of nitrogen application on canola (Brassica napus L. cv. Bulbul-98) under rainfed conditions. Four levels of S (0, 10, 20, and 30 kg/ha) and three levels of N (40, 60, and 80 kg/ha) and a control treatment with both nutrients at zero level were included in the experiments. Sulfur levels were applied at sowing while N levels were applied by three methods (100% soil application, 90% soil+10% foliar application, and 80% soil +20% foliar application). The experiments were laid out in randomized complete block (RCB) design having four replications. Oil content increased significantly up to 20 kg S/ha but further increase in S level did not enhance oil content. Glucosinolate content increased from 13.6 to 24.6 μmol/g as S rate was increased from 0 to 30 kg/ha. Protein content increased from 22.4% to 23.2% as S rate was increased from 0 to 20 kg/ha. Oil content responded negatively to the increasing N levels. The highest N level resulted in the highest values for protein (23.5%) and glucosinolate (19.9 μmol/g) contents. Methods of N application had no significant impact on any parameters under study.

The large white butterfly, Pieris brassicae (L.),
is an important pest of Indian mustard, Brassica juncea (L.)
Czern., and inflicts heavy damage to all the above ground
plant parts with strong yield reducing impacts. Farmers
have few practical options other than to spray insecticides
to protect their crop. In this study, an attempt was made
during 2012–2013 and 2013–2014 crop seasons at Ludhiana,
India, to evaluate Ethiopian mustard, Brassica carinata
A. Braun as a trap crop to manage this pest as an
alternate pest management strategy. B. carinata borders
surrounding B. juncea were compared to chemically protected
B. juncea and control (without B. carinata borders)
plots for their effects on P. brassicae infestation and grain
yield. Oviposition preference of adult butterflies was
studied in a two-choice test in field cages, while the effect
of two host plants on larval performance was studied under
laboratory conditions under no choice conditions. B. juncea
plots bordered with B. carinata harbored significantly
lower larval population compared to control B. juncea plots
during both the seasons. The grain yield in the bordered
plots was also significantly higher than that from control
plots and was statistically non-significant from that
obtained in chemically protected plots. Female butterflies
showed distinct oviposition preference for B. carinata over
B. juncea and the larvae reared on B. carinata completed
development in shorter period and grew bigger and heavier
than those reared on B. juncea. Results indicated that B.
carinata has potential to be used as trap crop to manage
P. brassicae.
