Thesis Title: Careers and Labour Market Flexibility in Global Industries: The Case of Seafarers
The flexibilisation of labour in the global labour market has been a bone of contention among scholars from different disciplines over the past four decades. On the one hand, such employment is seen as a detrimental practice to employees, who might lose their occupational identity as well as constantly experience job insecurity and uncertainty. On the other hand, flexible employment is perceived as the pillar of freedom, enabling individuals to fulfil their potential through increasing labour market opportunities. In an attempt to assess these competing views within the context of a global industry where flexible employment is commonplace, the shipping industry has been chosen as the basis of an investigation to answer the following research questions:
1. To what extent are flexible employment arrangements perceived as beneficial to employers?
2. What are the perceived implications of flexible employment arrangements for employees?
3. What is the relationship between the flexibility of employment and the occupational identities of seafarers?
To answer these research questions, qualitative research methods were used to speak to over 70 participants. The methods included mostly semi-structured in-depth interviews and informal conversations conducted aboard a cargo ship.
The findings of the thesis can be largely divided into three main aspects. First, the thesis sheds light on the complexities of flexible employment in the shipping industry (i.e. the perceived negative and positive implications of such employment) for employers and employees. Secondly, using the shipping industry as an example, the thesis challenges current widespread views about the benefits of flexible employment to employers. Thirdly, the thesis presents the idea of a ‘double occupational identity’ to describe the often-complex occupational identity of seafarers related to differences in perceived labour market power.
Several strengths, limitations, and recommendations for policy and also for major stakeholders in the shipping industry are raised at the end of the thesis.

Bu kitap; duygusal ve davranışsal bozukluklara sahip öğrenciler hakkında bilgi sahibi olmak isteyen sınıf öğretmenleri, özel eğitim öğretmenleri ve alanda çalışan uzmanlar için hazırlanmış giriş niteliğinde bir uygulama kitabıdır. Her bir bozukluğun nedeni, tanımlanması, güncel araştırmalar ışığında verilmeye çalışılmış ve okul ortamındaki pratik uygulamalarla da anlatım zenginleştirilmiştir. Bunlara ek olarak belirli bir bozukluğun tüm yönlerine ilişkin temel yaklaşımla birlikte bilimsel olarak geliştirilmiş müdahele yöntemleri de verilmeye çalışılmıştır.

Bu kitabın alanda yeni çalışmaya başlayan öğretmenler kadar güncel verilerle desteklenen tanı koyma ve müdahele stratejilrine önem vermesi nedeniyle alanda uzun süredir çalışmakta olan öğretmenlere ve uzmanlara da yararlı olacağını düşünmekteyiz.

Career education is an inseparable part of general education. In many countries a very big attention is paid to this. In Lithuania after 1990, a qualitatively new career education system has been started to be created, the development of which was not consistent and systematic during the whole period up to 2017. From a scientific point of view, most of the attention was paid to the analysis and estimation of the learners’ opinion, however much less attention was paid to career professionals’ position. Career professional’s position has been established in Lithuania since January 1st, 2017. However, such specialist preparation, their qualification questions, employment in education establishments, and career education process organisation and realisation remains problematic.
A qualitative / pilot research, carried out between February-March 2017, was focused on the career professionals’ (43) position on career questions analysis. It was sought to analyse career education situation in comprehensive schools, grounding the analysis on career professionals’ position.
It has been established, that career education has the greatest importance on students’ professional decision formation, and professional decision demand is the most important. Career actualisation demand is also important, because it helps the students understand career importance, encourages the students of low motivation to be interested in their career. Career education process organisation factors most frequently cause difficulties for career education: one encounters organisational difficulties, career education episodicity is experienced.
It has been stated, that resultivity of career education in a comprehensive school is high, because students’ professional decision is improved, motivation, responsibility are strengthened, abilities, competencies are educated, knowledge and information are provided. However, seeking to improve career education at school, it is necessary to raise specialists’ qualification and to establish a full-time position.

This thesis examines the discourse of careers services in UK university websites. The notion of employability has been presented and promoted by powerful groups, such as governments, organisations, the media, employers, and higher education institutions, as the remedy to the social problem of unemployment. Careers services in UK universities were given the role of ‘expert’ professionals who are there to support and guide students towards developing their employability and skills. This study examined the ideas and messages reproduced and promoted by the careers services, which could affect the students’ understanding of the ‘job market’ and their role in it. The chosen methodology, that is corpus-based critical discourse analysis, combined qualitative and quantitative methods and tools for the analysis of 2.6 million words deriving from 58 UK universities’ websites, and more specifically the careers services sections. This study sought to examine the relationships between school facilities, school resources and teacher career intentions. The hypothesis of this study is that teachers are affected by their teaching context, as manifested through the facilities and resources that they have available to them. It is hypothesised that this effect of the teaching context impacts upon teachers’ enjoyment, motivation, and satisfaction, of and for teaching. Further, it is predicted that this impact upon enjoyment, motivation and satisfaction will ultimately impact upon teachers’ career intentions, and likelihood of remaining at their current school, and more widely, within the teaching profession. The key research question the study addressed was: ‘What is the relationship between teacher career intentions and teaching resources and facilities?’ In addition, a series of sub-questions were imbedded in the research. The first sub-question was ‘What facilities do teachers most value in respect to their ability to teach effectively?’ The second was ‘What resources do teachers most value to allow them to teach effectively?’ The third was ‘What is the connection between teaching experience and self-reported likelihood of teacher movement?’ This study found that teachers’ intentions were affected by their resources and facilities, with resources being more impactful than facilities. It also suggest that teachers have different perceptions of the resources and facilities at their school, depending upon their intentions to move schools or leave the profession.

Often, in spite of having the right set of qualifications, technical skills and experiences, certain candidates fails to impress the interviewers during job-interviews. There is no denying of the fact that when it comes to finally secure a job; almost everything depends upon the candidate’s performance during the interview process. Therefore, besides recognizing the importance of interviews; it is also widely believed that with proper understanding, preparation and practice, a person’s interview skills and employability can be greatly enhanced. With this objective, this article brings forth a valuable compilation of 25 important interview questions and suggestions for their effective answering. Most of the questions selected here are basically collected and shortlisted through a process of focus group discussion. The questions are general and contemporary in nature and are mostly suitable for junior to middle-level management positions, across various private sector organizations in India.

Kitap, yansıtıcı ve bilinçli bir öğretmenin uygulayabileceği en yeni araştırmaları sunarak, bilinçli öğretmen üzerine odaklanmaktadır. Uzmanlar, klinisyenler ve araştırmacılar, yeme bozukluklarının duygusal düzensizliklerden kaynaklandığı vakalarda Diyalektik Davranış Terapisinin etkin olacağı konusunda hemfikirdi. Alanda yapılan pek çok adaptasyon çalışması olmasına rağmen Debra Safer, Christy Telch ve Eunice Chen bunu deneysel bazda yapan ilk kişilerdir. Standart diyalektik davranış terapisinin, tıkanırcasına yeme bozukluğu ve blumia nervoza semptomlarını tedavi etme yollarının yapılandırılmış bir özetini sunan bu kitap ile alandaki ihtiyaca cevap vermişlerdir. Bu alanda çalışan klinik psikologların ve danışmanların mutlaka okuması gereken önemli bir kaynak olmakla birlikte bu alanda okuyan öğrenciler için de farklı bir bakış açısı kazandırmaktadır.

Amacına uygun şekilde düzenlen bu kitap, diyalektik davranış terapisi adapte edilirken belirli sınırlar çizmek yerine okuyucuya geliştirilebilir bir zemin hazırlar. Bu yönüyle tedaviyi uygulamaya ve geliştirmeye teşvik eder. Background: The choice of a career is a crucial decision that has a lifelong impact on a person's living pattern. It is important to understand the motives of those choosing to study dentistry, because these motives may influence an individual's level of commitment to the profession. The aim of the present study was to highlight the motives of choosing dentistry as a career among 432 1st year dental students. Methods: A pretested close ended questionnaire comprising of 30 questions, was administered to 1st year dental students registered under Barkatullah University, Bhopal. Students were asked questions pertaining to the importance of five central motives money, people, business, flexibility, and personal background for selecting dentistry as a career. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 17. Results: It was observed that being self-employed (54%) and helping people (51%) were reported as the top two factors for joining dentistry. Conclusion: Students' vision of a being self-employed and helping people appears to have influenced their choice of dentistry. This implies that being independent may be one of the most motivating factors underlying the bright image projected by the dental profession. The policy makers should work on making dentistry a lucrative profession, and improve the other motivating factors.

This paper considers the theme of careers services in Finland, in the context of its political and education system, and makes a comparison to careers services in England. It also briefly considers the very notion of comparative education.

This book focuses on the multiple and diverse masculinities ‘at work’. Spanning both historical approaches to the rise of ‘profession’ as a marker of masculinity, and critical approaches to the current structures of management, employment and workplace hierarchy, the book questions what role masculinity plays in cultural understandings, affective experiences and mediatised representations of a professional ‘career’.

We contribute empirical evidence to the literature on careers in creative industries. It has been argued that boundaryless career patterns are at the core of creative industries. we question this widely held argument and show that the most innovative Japanese video game developers make use of employment models that prioritize stable employment and bounded careers linked to it. The paper makes several contributions: First, it carefully describes career development patterns of Japanese video game developers, which have so far not been documented. We hereby contribute to the literature on creative industries by adding an important empirical case of bounded career patterns. Second, we try to explain why Japanese firms stick to traditional practices by addressing the link of bounded careers to integrative capabilities, and discuss what this means for creative industries in general and for video games in particular. We argue that integrative capabilities matter also in creative industries.

O objetivo deste estudo foi identificar as estratégias de reorientação da carreira do músico brasileiro nos últimos quinze anos diante das mudanças tecnológicas e institucionais ocorridas no período. O estudo procurou responder quais foram e como ocorreram as principais mudanças nas indústrias musicais brasileiras e quais foram seus impactos na carreira de músicos profissionais. Três vetores e agentes transformadores foram pesquisados: a tecnologia, as leis de incentivo fiscal à cultura e o SESC. O estudo foi conduzido por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas, com 24 músicos da cidade de São Paulo e com ao menos quinze anos de carreira. A teoria das carreiras sem fronteiras foi utilizada como lente teórica do estudo. O estudo identificou as mudanças e os impactos da tecnologia, das leis de incentivo, do SESC, da atuação conjunta dos três vetores e agentes, o aumento do número de vagas de professores, a criação e a reestruturação de orquestras e a queda nos valores cobrados por atividades musicais. Foram identificadas duas estratégias de reorientação da carreira musical: a primeira foi a busca de uma atividade musical complementar remunerada para viabilizar trabalhos artísticos e a segunda foi empreendedorismo artístico. A pesquisa pretende contribuir para o estudo de carreiras, especialmente das indústrias criativas, com a identificação dos impactos tecnológicos e institucionais e com a análise de fenômenos particulares das indústrias musicais brasileiras.

The aim of this study was to identify the reorientation strategies of Brazilian career musicians in the last fifteen years due to technological and institutional changes. The study sought to answer what were and how there were major changes in Brazilian music industries and what were their impacts on career musicians. Three vectors and transforming agents were investigated: the technology, tax incentives for culture and SESC. The study was conducted through semi-structured interviews with 24 musicians in the city of São Paulo and with at least fifteen years of career experience. The theory of boundaryless careers was used as a theoretical lens in the study. The changes and the impacts of technology, tax incentives, SESC, the joint action of the three vectors and transforming agents, the growth in the number of places for teachers, the creation and restructuring of orchestras and the fall of the values of music services musicians were identified. Two music career reorientation strategies were identified: the first was the search for additional paid musical activity to enable artistic work and the second was the artistic entrepreneurship. The research aims to contribute to the study of careers, especially in the creative industries, with the identification of technological and institutional impacts and the analysis of particular phenomena in Brazilian music industries.

Toplumsal etkileşimin olduğu her yerde, anlaşmazlıkların olması doğal ve kaçınılmazdır. Kişiler, gruplar ve toplumlar arası anlaşmazlıklar; doğru bir biçimde yönetildiğinde gelişimin, ilerlemenin, dönüşümün, barışın ve bütünleşmenin hem enerji kaynağı hem de motoru olabilmektir. Ancak, anlaşmazlıklar yanlış ve yıkıcı yaklaşımlarla yönetildiğinde ise; yıkımın, şiddetin, zulmün ve acının kaynağına dönüşmektedir.

Anlaşmazlıkları ortadan kaldırma, farklılığı ortadan kaldırmaktadır. Doğa ve insanlık, farklılığı ve çoklığı kabul etmeyi ve anlamayı gerektirir. Farklılığı ortadan  kaldırmaya çalışmak yerine; onu anlamaya ve nasıl yöneteceğimizi keşfetmeye başladığımızda, yolumuz anlaşmazlıklarımızı nasıl yöneteceğimizden geçmektedir. Anlaşmazlıkları nasıl yöneteceğimiz üzerine odaklandığımızda, karşımıza en temel yaklaşım ve paradigma olan "dönüşümsel arabuluculuk" çıkmaktadır.Dönüşümsel arabuluculuğun alanyazına en önemli katkısı, anlaşmazlık çözüm sürecinin toplumsal değerlerden ve kültürden bağımsız olmadığı,ideolojimizin ve inanç tarzımızın anlaşmazlıklara ilişkin değerlendirmelerimizi, tutumlarımızı ve anlaşmazlıklarımızı ele alış tarzımızı etkilediği düşüncesidir. Yine, dönüşümsel arabuluculuğun en ayırt edici özelliği, anlaşmazlıkları yönetim sürecinin, kişileri dönüştürebileceğine, geliştirebileceğine ve güçlendirebileceğine yönelik yapıcı ve olumlu duruşudur.

Bush ve P. Folger tarafından geliştirilen "dönüşümsel arabuluculuk modeli" ülkemizde, her sene mahkemelere taşınan yüz binlerce anlaşmazlığı, çekişmeyi ve ayrışmayı yüz yüze müzakere ederek yapıcı ve barışçıl olarak çözme kapasitesini güçlendirmek için bir fırsat ve araç olacaktır. Cezalandırıcı adalet anlayışından, onarıcı adalet anlayışına dönme çabalarına ışık tutacaktır.

Bu eser,içerdiği alternatif paradigma çerçevesinde hukuk sistemimize yeni giren arabuluculuk modelinin doğru ve amacına uygun kullanılması için de referans olacak anlamlı ve önemli bir eserdir. Buna ek olarak, anlaşmazlık çözümü üzerine çalışan hukukçulara, psikologlara, psikolojik danışmanlara, eğitimcilere, psikiyatristlere ve sosyal çalışmacılara hem kurumsal anlamda hem de somut anlaşmazlıkların ve çatışmaların yapıcı ve barışcıl yönetimi konusunda yol gösterecek temel bir başvuru kaynağı olacaktır.

In this article we provide an overview of our findings on how young people’s celebrity talk relates to their own aspirations for the future. We suggest that this provides a resource for careers education work both to widen the careers young people feel are accessible to them and as a way of opening up a critical dialogue about the ongoing impact of inequality on education and employment opportunities.

Over the last few years, I have had the opportunity to guest lecture, usually at the Master’s level, at various Universities in Upstate New York.  I find the experience very rewarding as I have the opportunity to bring value to the next generation.  But, most importantly, I am always enriching my knowledge in the classroom participation of the students.

Some research and popular conceptions of artists call into question the value of an arts degree. These include notions of the self-taught artistic genius, stereotypes about the arts-educated barista, and a recent report claiming most professional artists do not attend art school. Yet, what is the value of higher education for workers in creative fields? Do arts graduates contribute to the creative capital of cities and economies? This chapter draws on data from the Strategic National Arts Alumni Project (SNAAP), a survey of more than 92,000 arts alumni from over 140 institutions across North America, in order to assess the effects of arts-based training on career pathways. We present findings on how arts graduates assess the benefits of their education, how they deploy creative skills in various areas of life, and an analysis of challenges for higher education institutions and graduates (inequality, debt, and skill gaps). The chapter concludes by expanding current understandings of creative human capital to incorporate how competencies developed during arts education are deployed in various sectors.

The task of studying the impact of social class on physical and mental health involves, among other things, the use of a conceptual toolbox that defines what social class is, establishes how to measure it, and sets criteria that help distinguish it from closely related concepts. One field that has recently witnessed a wealth of theoretical and conceptual research on social class is psychology, but geographers' and sociologists' attitude of diffidence toward this " positivistic " discipline has prevented them from taking advantage of this body of scholarship. This paper aims to highlight some of the most important developments in the psychological study of social class and social mobility that speak to the long-standing concerns of health geographers and sociologists with how social position, perceptions, social comparisons, and class-based identities impact health and well-being.

ABSTRACT
Purpose - With the changing trends business studies have become very
popular amongst the students as a means of future career. Accordingly, an
issue has always been at hand the students and parents both that which higher education institution be selected for the business management education. This research paper examines different factors that influence business student’s behavior in selecting a business school.
Methodology/Sample - The research has been carried out in the vicinity of
Karachi city. The researchers used both primary and secondary methods of
data collection. Primary data was collected through questionnaire. The sample of 100 students was selected. Probability sampling technique was used whereby 10 students were selected form each well known business schools of Karachi.
Findings - The researcher classified different influencing factors into two
main categories -- internal and internal ones and found that both internal and
external factors influence business students in selecting a business school
but external factors influence students more than internal factors.
Practical Implications - The outcome of the research guide the future
business management students about quality and standards of various
business schools as well as assist the business school in identification of the
factors critical for the students.

Kertas kerja ini membincangkan tentang terjemahan Career
Thoughts Inventory (CTI) di dalam Bahasa Inggeris kepada Bahasa Melayu dan melihat keesahan dan kebolehpercayaa
nnya. Inventori Pemikiran Kerjaya (CTI; Sampson. et al, 1996a) terdiri daripada 48 item yang direka untuk secara tidak
langsung mengukur pemikiran kerjaya disfungsi. CTI menyediakan jumlah skor serta perincian untuk tiga skala iaitu Kekeliruan Membuat Keputusan (DMC), Kebimbangan Komitmen  (CA), dan Konflik Luaran (EC).CTI menggunakan skala likert dengan jawapan dari ;sangat tidak setuju: (0)Sangat setuju(3) dan jumlah skor pelbagai 0-144, dengan skor yang lebih tinggi menunjukkan pemikiran yang lebih tidak berfungsi. CTI boleh ditadbir pada 7-15 minit dan boleh mengetahui keputusan dalam tempoh 5 hingga 10 minit. Proses terjemahan ke Bahasa Melayu menggunakan kaedah back translation
yang dicadangkan oleh Brislin, Lonner dan Thondike (1973). Item di dalam CTI diterjemahkan mengikut budaya dan nilai tempatan oleh seorang panel di Institut Terjemahan Negara, seorang pensyarah Bahasa dan 2 orang guru Bahasa Inggeris dan seorang guru Bahasa Melayu serta dua orang kaunselor
sekolah. Untuk Keesahan Muka dan Kandungan soal selidik 10
orang pensyarah dalam bidang dan 6 orang kaunselor sekolah
terlibat. Nilai keesahan muka dan kandungan yang diperolehi daripada panel pakar adalah sebnayak 0.837 dan kesemua
nilai minimum dan maksimunnya memperoleh lebih daripada
0.60. Nilai CTI mengikut konstruk adalah sebanyak .927
untuk konstruk kekeliruan membuat keputusan kerjaya, .788
untuk konstruk kebimbangan komitmen dan
.803 untuk konstruk konflik luaran. Setelah soal selidik diubahsuai berdasarkan saranan pakar, kajian rintis soal selidik dijalankan kepada 40 orang pelajar di sekolah menengah. Kebolehpercayaan soal selidik CTI yang diperolehi ialah bagi sub skala kekeliruan membuat keputusan sebanyak
.875, sub skala kebimbangan komitmen sebanayak .801 dan sub skala konflik luaran sebanyak .758.Secara keseluruhan
kebolehpercayaan CTI yang diperoleh ialah sebanyak .903
Ini membuktikan kajian ini telah berjaya menterjemahkan CTI ke dalam Bahasa Melayu dengan memperoleh keesahan dan
kebolehpercayaan yang tinggi.
