Coastal Landscapes

Bangladesh like many other countries of the world is facing the adversities arising from climate change for no fault of its own. There is a growing concern all over the world on the issue of climate change and its adverse impact on countries more vulnerable owing to their respective geographical locations. The country is frequently subjected to cyclones, floods, and storm surges due to the adverse impact of climate change. The purpose of this study is to facilitate local authority, local people, especially women and other most vulnerable people to climate change in developing and implementing adaptation visioning. Developing the participatory architectural design of adaptive infrastructural solutions and livelihood demonstration is another objective. After that, to develop the climate adaptive land-use planning, and resilient structure of the Latachapli Union and Deluti Union. Finally to ensure the environmental, gender and social standards of the resilient infrastructure design. A field survey is the key approach of the study. Primarily climate change impact issues and site morphologies were investigated based on secondary data provided by UNDP and archival research. Later on resiliency indicators were understood respecting site by focus group discussions and semi-structured questioners collaborating with stakeholders as public representatives, common people of all ages and marginality, especially women. Risk measures, vulnerable areas, implication locations have been identified and mapped through discussion and participation of all stakeholders. Design solutions and guidelines generated through co-production with general people. Finally, all recommendations were justified with public hearing in presence of public representatives, selective beneficiaries from localities. The outcome of this study is two climate-resilient landscapes of Latachapli Union and Deluti Union including the design of two women centers as resilient rural infrastructures in both Union. The design of hydroponics is provided as an alternative livelihood option for Deluti Union. Additionally, the design of a gender-responsive rural infrastructure as a social platform is provided.

Notre équipe d'enseignant et de chercheur participe à un programme de recherche sur l'impact du changement climatique sur le littoral méditerranéen. Notre démarche s'articule entre enseignement du projet et séminaire d'initiation à la recherche en cycle Master et recherche doctorale. Notre envisageons l'espace littoral de manière diachronique selon trois axes. Premièrement l'histoire de l'évolution de l'urbanisation de la frange littorale, ensuite la connaissance cartographique de la situation présente du littoral et de son épaisseur, et enfin l'exploration par le projet d'échelle urbaine et territoriale. Nous proposons dans cette communication de présenter cette démarche, à partir de la cartographie exploratoire. Nous avons développé un savoir-faire technique, méthodologique et pédagogique sur les questions de la représentation cartographique du territoire de l'échelle métropolitaine à l'échelle régionale. Ces travaux sont autant des outils de représentation que de questionnement problématiques, de production de connaissance et d'aide au projet. Ils permettent sur le littoral de notre région, de faire émerger et de prendre la mesure de phénomènes tant génériques que spécifiques (épaisseur, usages et pratiques, évolution du trait de côte, desserte, etc.). Les objectifs sont de réintégrer les cycles longs de la nature dans la pensée sur les territoires littoraux, et de recomposer le littoral autour d'une certaine épaisseur variable. L'atelier de projet ambitionne de répondre à ces problématiques littorales en constituant une connaissance «par le projet».
ENGLISH Abstract : Our teaching and research team is participating in a research programme on the impact of climate change on the Mediterranean coast. Our approach is a combination between teaching the project (design process) and a series of seminars focused on research at Masters and doctoral level. We envisage the coastal area in a diachronic way based on three themes. Firstly, the history of the evolution of urbanisation of the coastal fringe, secondly, the cartographic knowledge of the present situation of the coastline and its depth, and thirdly, the exploration through design according to the urban and territorial scale. In this paper, we are presenting this approach, based on exploratory mapping. We have developed the technical, methodological and pedagogical know-how on the issues of cartographic representation of the territory from the metropolitan to the regional scale. This work is as much a tool for representation as for identifying problems, knowledge production and project support. They allow both generic and specific phenomena to emerge and be measured on the coastline of our region (depth, uses and practices, evolution of the coastline, services, etc.). The objectives are to reintegrate the long cycles of nature into the way we think about coastal territories, and to recompose the coastline around a certain variable depth. The project workshop aims to respond to these coastal issues by building up knowledge "by design".

Ancient Mediterranean Harbour-cities: New discoveries, documentation and interpretation through recent underwater and coastal archaeological research and the study of iconographic and written sources: diachronic evolution, harbour topography and fortification, economic and naval networks, administration, legislation, socio-economic framework, daily life, among others.
Recent archaeological fieldwork, documentation and interpretation in harbour and coastal archaeology, on issues, but not exclusively:
- Harbour infrastructure and facilities; harbour construction techniques
- Harbour archaeo engineering
- Innovative methodologies in shallow-water geoarchaeological prospections
- Issues of climate change impacts on Mediterranean coastal sites and integrated management of the coastal zone.

San Cataldo (Lecce, Italy) is located on the Adriatic sea coast, about 10 km east from Lecce, in Apulia (Puglia) region. Since ancient times it was an important departure and landing place for trades and travels between the two shores of the Adriatic Sea. A clear evidence of it is the presence of a Roman pier, whose remains are currently partially visible. They were studied by recent multidisciplinary researches, outlining their  technical construction features and the ancient topography of the surrounding area. Starting from the analysis of San Cataldo coastal landscape in ancient ages, this contribution is firstly focused to illustrate the evolution  of the port in medieval times, when the resuming of long-haul commercial traffic led the port to be an important landing place for the Adriatic routes again. At this time, the old Roman pier was restored and protected by a coastal tower. After a long period of abandon, the document analyses the  transformations occurred between the 19th and 20th centuries, when it was built: a lighthouse, a new pier, close to the old one, a tramway. This ensured a fast connection between Lecce and its seashore. In the second half of the 20th century, a new tourist vocation finally replaced the commercial one for San Cataldo, leading to overbuilding events that characterise the current coastal landscape.

In 2011 the Department of Cultural Heritage of the University of Padua has activated the project "Nora and the sea" in order to reconstruct the coastal layout of the ancient city of Nora (CA).
In particular, the spatial and functional relationship between the archaeological site and its surrounding maritime space and the extent of the sea level rise were examined. Today as in the past, sea level variation, together with the destructive coastal process of erosion, still threaten and shape, the shoreline, forcing the city to adapt.
The archaeological investigation was based on several data derived from the study of published material and previous research, from cartography and aerial images of the last century, from drone photogrammetry, from the reconstruction of the bathymetry of the seabed through echosounder and manual relief and finally from direct underwater exploration by surveying and recording all the submerged structures. The final result was the development of a GIS platform handling the digital model of the land and the seabed and the estimates of SLR (sea level rise) for the ancient age.
A new phase of the project is currently being carried out, mainly focusing on the geomorphological approach. Such research reinforces the multidisciplinary approach and requires the realization of a campaign of core samplings to understand the paleosettlement and the paleoenvironmental dynamics.
In addition to this, the cores could be a useful tool in order to spot a light on the harbour of the ancient city, which remains still today an unsolved question.

La necropoli meridionale di Tharros-Capo San Marco è da tempo oggetto di studio da parte della cattedra di Archeologia fenicio-punica dell'Università di Bologna in relazione all'obiettivo di ricostruire i poco noti rituali funerari d'età punica. Le nuove ricerche prevedono anche l’utilizzo sistematico di tecniche geomatiche e geofisiche, applicate con differenti livelli di dettaglio, da una scala “macro” (relativa all’intero contesto preso in esame) a una scala “micro”, rappresentata dalle singole sepolture fino agli oggetti in esse contenuti. Accanto alla valutazione preventiva del record archeologico sepolto e alla documentazione di dettaglio del patrimonio esistente e fruibile, le recenti esperienze hanno anche avviato un’attività di monitoraggio dell’intero versante occidentale del promontorio sul quale si sviluppa la necropoli fenicia e punica, con l’intento di fornire un possibile contributo alla tutela del sito.

The Southern cemetery of Tharros-Capo San Marco has been for many years the subject of the study and the excavations activity by the chair of Phenician and Punic Archaeology at the University of Bologna. The study of this context is aimed at identifying the relatively unknown funerary rituals of Punic age. The new research includes the systematic employment of geomatic and geophysical techniques, applied with different levels of details, from a “macro” scale (related to the whole examined context) to a “micro” scale, represented by the single tombs, up to the grave goods deposed within. Beside to the preventive evaluation of the archaeological buried record and to the detailed documentation of the existing monumental heritage, the recent experiences have also started a monitoring activity of the entire western cliff on which the phoenician and punic necropolis develops, with the aim to contribute to the protection of this site.
