This paper gathers together the essential points of knowledge acquired on transhumance mainly in Central
- Southern Italy in both Roman and modern times. The history of research on this subject, the importance of
textual evidence and the debate about the continuity/non-continuity of such practices are considered. As for the
advancement of future research, the great potential of analytical landscape archaeology and multidisciplinary
studies is suggested.

This article deals with a relatively new form of archaeological research in the Mediterranean region – intensive surface survey, coverage of the landscape by teams walking in close order, recording patterns of human activity visible on the landsurface as scatters of pottery and lithics, or building remains. Since 2000, archaeologists from Dutch and Belgian universities working on Mediterranean survey projects have gathered annually to discuss methodological issues in workshops that gradually attracted landscape archaeologists from other European countries and Turkey. On the basis of these discussions, this paper, written by regular workshop contributors and other invited authors with wider Mediterranean experience, aims to evaluate the potential of various approaches to the archaeological surface record in the Mediterranean and provide guidelines for standards of good practice in Mediterranean survey.

Regione Toscana recently delivered guidelines for the archaeological map of Tuscany in the aim of fidfilling both administrative and research nceds. Format proposed in 1995 by CIDOC has been slightly modified and enhanced, especially to represent chronological data in a more compact and formal way, and to add room for additional information. Wherever possible, normalisation of language is achieved by controlled dictionaries or thesauri. Main goals have been portability, scientific correctness, easy of use, coherence with national and international standards. Putting information in the right spatiotemporal context has been addressed as an important goal. In light of portability of data, and considering some limitations of traditional GIs, we decided to separate basic cartographic information from description of sites, that are georeferenced and have their own geometric properties stored as attributes. Comparison with national standards showed that there are many similarities, but som...

GEOMORPHOLOGY AND GEOARCHAEOLOGICAL TYPOLOGY OF ANCIENT HARBOURS IN LAGOONAL CONTEXTS In coastal areas, under a context of relative sea-level stability during the past 6,000 years, one important question relates to the impact of environmental conditions on human settlements around lagoons. Historiography has developed a number of deterministic models but how do these fair in the light of recent palaeo-environmental data? What was the impact of these occupations on the evolution of the coastline? How did ancient societies use and overcome, or not, the environmental potentialities and specific constraints linked to the occupation of lagoonal environments, including accessibility, navigation conditions, sediment infilling and the draught depth. Here we present a number of multidisciplinary case study examples of lagoonal harbours. We attempt to estimate the weight of natural forcing agents on the different harbour sites and underline the important roles of coastline changes and the sed...

2 Perché, quindi, studiare i paleoambienti portuali antichi?

The ancient harbour of Pisa, Portus Pisanus, was one of Italy's most influential seaports for many centuries. Nonetheless, very little is known about its oldest harbour and the relationships between environmental evolution and the main stages of harbour history. The port complex that ensured Pisa's position as an economic and maritime power progressively shifted westwards by coastal progradation, before the maritime port of Livorno was built in the late 16 th century AD. The lost port is, however, described in the early 5 th century AD as being " a large, naturally sheltered embayment " that hosted merchant vessels, suggesting an important maritime structure with significant artificial infrastructure to reach the city. Despite its importance, the geographical location of the harbour complex remains controversial and its environmental evolution is unclear. To fill this knowledge gap and furnish accurate palaeoenvironmental information on Portus Pisanus, we used bio-and geosciences. Based on stratigraphic data, the area's relative sea-level history, and long-term environmental dynamics, we established that at ~200 BC, a naturally protected lagoon developed and hosted Portus Pisanus until the 5 th century AD. The decline of the protected lagoon started at ~1350 AD and culminated ~1500 AD, after which time the basin was a coastal lake.
