A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF RENAISSANCE AND BAROQUE SELF-PORTRAIT PAINTING BY FEMALE ARTISTS

This  thesis is focused on the self-portrait painting practice by three female artists from the Renaissance and the Baroque periods: Sofonisba Anguissola, Lavinia Fontana, and Artemisia Gentileschi. Chapter I introduces the self-portrait as it developed specific to the Renaissance and in relation to a Greco-Roman classical ideal. The chapter focuses on Renaissance concepts of art and the very role of the artist. Chapter II studies the numerous self-portraits of Sofonisba Anguissola, the first great Renaissance female artist to have an international career. The artist’s self-portraits both became a foundation for those of later female artists and self-consciously expressed the new elite status achieved by this Lombard artist of noble lineage who worked as court portraitist for the Spanish monarchy. Chapter III examines the self-portraits and innovative identity self-portraiture of Lavinia Fontana of Bologna. It is demonstrated how her two early self-portraits built on the precedent established by Sofonisba, and yet, are of somewhat greater iconographic complexity. While in her maturity the artist developed self-portraiture into the identity self-portrait through the subject of Judith and Holofernes. Within her treatments of the theme in some examples she put herself into the figure of Judith and in others into Judith’s maid Abra. Lavinia Fontana’s final masterpiece, the improbable painting Minerva Dressing done at the end of her extensive career was likewise arguably an identity self-portrait. Minerva Dressing constitutes the first female fully nude figure painted by a female artist. Chapter IV focuses on Artemisia Gentileschi. This thesis designates the artist’s Pommersfelden Susanna and the Elders as both Artemisia’s first exact self-portrait and the first female full-length nude self-portrait painted by a female artist. The work is also an identity self-portrait. This chapter continues with a discussion of both versions of Artemisia’s infamous Judith and Holofernes (Capodimonte/Uffizi). Both works are arguably exact self-portrait paintings and identity self-portraits. Artemisia’s Allegory of Painting in London, often referred to as a self-portrait in scholarship, is suggested a perhaps better understood as an ideal identity self-portrait rather than a literal self-representation. The Allegory of Painting is considered together with other attributed self-portraits and portraits of the artist. A major theme in Chapter IV is the transition from literal self-representation to allegorical and ideal portrayal of the self. This thesis suggests that, as the artist’s career advanced, Artemisia Gentileschi did continue to paint both the exact and the ideal self-portrait. Finally, in the Conclusion, the legacy of the self-portraits of the Wonder Women, to adopt a phrase from Giorgio Vasari, is considered in reference to future female artists such as Elisabetta Sirani, Angelica Kauffmann, Elisabeth Vigée Le-Brun and Paula Modersohn-Becker.

Nel maggio del 1852 a Firenze si svolge la vendita all’asta della collezione dei marchesi Rinuccini: nello spazio di un mese si assiste alla dispersione di una delle più antiche e intatte raccolte cittadine, formata da circa settecento opere d’arte, di ogni epoca e scuola. L’evento era stato preparato per tempo, anche a causa dei contemporanei rivolgimenti europei, e risulta essere un momento importante della storia del mercato artistico locale, ma non solo. Tramite l’analisi di documenti d’archivio e testimonianze d’epoca, l’intervento intende ripercorrere le fasi di organizzazione e di svolgimento dell’asta, contestualizzandolo a livello italiano ed europeo, allo stesso tempo evidenziandone la natura quasi eccezionale nel panorama fiorentino, data l’assenza nella capitale del Granducato di un moderno e strutturato sistema di vendite all’incanto come quello parigino o londinese.

Η σαρκοφάγος στην οποία θα αναφερθούμε, δημοσιεύτηκε το 1948 στο Bulletin du Musee de Beyrouth, από τον Ernest Will. Ο E. Will πραγματεύεται μία σαρκοφάγο ρωμαϊκής περιόδου, που βρέθηκε κατά τη διάρκεια του Β΄ παγκοσμίου πολέμου, κοντά στην πόλη της Τύρου, στον Λίβανο. Το εύρημα μεταφέρθηκε στο Εθνικό Μουσείο της Βηρυτού και έκτοτε εκτίθεται μαζί με τα υπόλοιπα ταφικά μνημεία του μουσείου. Η σαρκοφάγος, ανήκει στον τύπο της κλίνης, καθώς το κάλυμμα της είναι κλινόμορφο. Πάνω στην κλίνη του καλύμματος, βρίσκεται ανακεκλιμένη η μορφή μίας γυναίκας. Είναι αξιοπρόσεκτο επίσης ότι το έργο κοσμείται και στις τέσσερις πλευρές του με ανάγλυφο διάκοσμο.

Questo volume è il frutto di una giornata di studi dedicata interamente al secolo Ottocento tenutasi a Palazzo Corsini nell’aprile del 2015. Le pagine qui raccolte raccontano quindi una storia, anzi un insieme di storie diverse, alcune singolari, e ricostruiscono la vicenda di un luogo altrettanto singolare, dei personaggi che lo hanno vissuto, degli oggetti che lo hanno popolato, degli eventi di cui è stato teatro nell’arco di cento anni. Questo luogo è ovviamente Palazzo Corsini alla Lungara, oggi una delle sedi delle Gallerie Nazionali d’Arte Antica di Roma e dell’Accademia dei Lincei, e a dar voce alle sue storie è un gruppo di studiosi che intrattengono da anni uno stretto, diuturno e personale rapporto con la Galleria e con il Palazzo, segno d’elezione ma anche di continuità. Rispetto alle notizie relative alle epoche più antiche, proprio l’Ottocento era rimasto maggiormente in ombra fino ad oggi, a dispetto della ricchezza di informazioni di cui possiamo disporre. È  a questa immagine composita che si vuole restituire qualcosa della sua originaria vivacità. Come in un gioco di scatole cinesi, si è cercato di ricomporre il denso intreccio in cui compaiono di volta in volta il Palazzo e le sue stanze, la Galleria e la Biblioteca, la famiglia e gli ultimi protagonisti del ramo romano, gli ospiti di riguardo e i visitatori occasionali, gli impiegati e la servitù, ognuno con qualche storia particolare da raccontare, persino i più defilati, che pure, da dietro le quinte dell’anonimato, hanno lasciato una traccia talora non insignificante del loro passaggio in questo sontuoso scenario. E poi, naturalmente, le opere d’arte: a volte in primo piano, a volte sullo sfondo, contemplate o descritte, acquisite e vendute, ammirate o denigrate, studiate e copiate, gelosamente custodite o solo ricordate, amate e odiate, come capita sempre con gli oggetti d’affezione.
